If I mix 40% brandy with 15% vermouth and orange juice which I love, is the alcohol content 55% or is it still 40%?

You are diluting a 40% drink with a 15% drink and water which contains 0% alcohol so what do you think? If you had only the brandy in the glass your drink would contain 40% alcohol.

If you had two shots of brandy does that make it 80% proof?
If you had three shots of brandy.................
By the way, you weren't about to have that drink when you posted were you?

OK brains, what is the alcohol content then?

That's irrelevant. I am talking about 2 different drinks with 2 different alcohol contents.
And yes I have just drunk it. Not my best experiment😆

Der!

Nobody can work any of this out without knowing the volume of each of the three liquids comprising the final mixed drink. But then, it would make a great SATS Stage 2 exam question for 11 year olds, something practical to help prepare them for the adult World out there!!

OK, so for example, 50ml brandy @ 40%, 50ml vermouth @ 15%, and 50ml orange juice.
What's the alcohol content?

Show your workings.
Is 40 + 15 + 0 ÷ 3?

50ml of 40% Brandy + 50ml of Orange juice = 100ml of 20% drink.

100ml of 20% drink + 50ml of 15% drink = 150ml of 18.33% drink.

This is literally year 7 stuff.

Exactly - as I said above, a great SATS stage 2 question... for the mental arithmetic paper!

I got 18% doing it roughly in my head (a third of 40 + a third of 15 + a third of 0 )%, but I guess the actual exam question would have the brandy at 39% or 42% for simplicity. And the Daily Mail would have a field day!

Really? Well I wasn't sure how to work it. And for the record there's nothing wrong with my maths.

As was already pointed out, your question means nothing without stating the quantities of each. However, the merriment was caused by you suggesting that there was even a possibility that it could have somehow risen to 55%.

Possible if it had been left to stand to let the orange juice ferment and change all of its sugar content to alcohol.

So how long do you leave a carton of orange juice before it ferments and becomes alcoholic?
Sounds cheaper than buying Cointreau.

Since were doing drink-related arithmetic, here's a real-world one - if you start drinking at 7pm and drink one pint of beer (2 units of alcohol) steadily each and every hour, and your body metabolises one unit of alcohol per hour, and maximum amount of alcohol that you can have in your system and still pass a breathalyser test is four units, when should you stop drinking in order to be able to drive to work legally at 6am the next morning?

And show your workings!

Cue all the usual humourless holier-than-thows stating that you shouldn't drink anything at all, because any alcohol in your system makes you a poorer driver!

Too many variables to calculate.

Wrong. I've covered all the variables.

In what way? All the variables were covered, If i hadn't have had a few drinks I might try and figure it out.

The irony.
