That was exciting to watch. Ihad no idea that whales behaved like that.
Yes - it shows once again that many animals are capable of great empathy.

This is not nice in any way - but rather than start a new thread I will stick it in here.

Do you think you're having a bad day?

Not when compared to this poor Impala (RIP)!

A herd of elephants trying to rescue a calf. Watch how one elephant puts its leg out from behind for the calf to try and grab hold of.

Wonderful video, thanks so much. I wanted to get into the water and push the calf back onto the ground myself

Yes, it was a bit tense to watch wasn't it.
When they all left , I wondered if the mother had told them to go for a while to see if the little calf would settle down and concentrate . It looked like they were only hiding in the bushes rather than just wandering off not bothered as it first appeared .

Yes it's a good job the video had a nice title so you could guess it had a happy ending.

Very interesting behaviour indeed - I agree.

Some good news for a change - Kakapos have an endearing innocence about them that is simply irresistible.

"[The kakapo] is an extremely fat bird. A good-sized adult will weigh about six or seven pounds, and its wings are just about good for waggling a bit if it thinks it's about to trip over something — but flying is out of the question. Sadly, however, it seems that not only has the kakapo forgotten how to fly, but it has forgotten that it has forgotten how to fly. Apparently a seriously worried kakapo will sometimes run up a tree and jump out of it, whereupon it flies like a brick and lands in a graceless heap on the ground."

"The kakapo is a bird out of time. If you look one in its large, round, greeny-brown face, it has a look of serenely innocent incomprehension that makes you want to hug it and tell it that everything will be all right, thought you know that it probably will not be."

Since 1989 when Douglas (RIP) wrote those words things have improved for the Kakapo but when I see stories like this it reminds me of all the animals we have recently lost including so many wonderful birds - the Dodo, the Moas, the super-eagle Harpagornis, Elephant birds and (from far further back) the Teratorns or even the Giant Cuban ground owl Ornimegalonyx.

I have the series with Stephen Fry - sad, beautiful and funny. Well worth watching.
