On EE Site..

A quick, little update if you use the WiFi when travelling via London Underground. On your next journey, if you wish to connect, you’ll need to change your WiFi connection to EE WiFi-Auto and re-enter your details. Here’s information, plus some handy screenshots, explaining how to do exactly that.

Tablets can access the new system, just not wifi only tablets.

For iOS - With the right carrier file settings (iOS 7 and above) you’ll be able to automatically connect to EE WiFi-Auto SSID and use the internet just by switching on the WiFi.

For compatible Android handsets and SIM tablets - Once underground just turn on WiFi and select the EE WiFi-Auto from the list of available networks, select the access method as EAP and EAP method as SIM. Note that if the EAP method “SIM” is not available then unfortunately your device is not compatible with this SSID.

which is rubbish, given that the whole Tfl Wifi system is based on getting free access from your phone operator, or paying a tourist tax.

I'm not fully conversant with the TfL system, but which phone operator is responsible for commuters who have wifi only tablets?

I can see that the operators give free access to their customers devices (which is apparently being authenticated by sim by EE). A wifi only tablet user isn't the customer of a phone operator for that device.

I tried using it last week with my EE iphone 5. It's total crap, doesn't automatically connect next time round, (just like the people in the comments section of that quoted link)

Unlike The Cloud and 02 wifi with I've also got, and connect immediately the phone gets a sniff of them

Virgin Media give you free access. I suppose that falls under the Wifi Only Tablet category.

for the last three years what has happened is that you get login details from your phone operator which you can then use on any of your devices.

You can use it with any WiFi-enabled device like smartphones, tablets or laptops. Any device that can connect to a home, work or public WiFi network will be able to connect to WiFi on the London Underground

They have clearly changed it to use Trusted 3GPP WiFi access.
It's part of the LTE 3GPP release 8 where your device should automatically connect using your SIM as authentication.
This goes through a secure tunnel and uses EAP authentication so you are logged onto EE's mobile HLR (which is what effectively authenticates you).

It appears to be not working for some though even with iOS 8 and CU 19.1.
More teething troubles?
