You had that one spot on, much to our chagrin.
At the risk of overthinking this candyfloss, the producers rely on human nature to produce the attraction/pairing but that same human nature entails a herd instinct in which nobody, even the so-called stirrers, wants to risk the wrath of the others.
As a result the recouplings are mostly drama-free except for the unlucky singleton left dangling strictly as a result of numbers.
The only (?) solution is to keep chucking newcomers in but even they are immediately cowed by ominous warnings, dirty looks and plain old ostracisation.
I don't know what the solution might be apart from keeping two houses/villas and forcing a reshuffle at various intervals. Yes, it's been done with Big Brother in at least one country but that sort of major upheaval would produce far more drama.
As it stands now, you have two types of couples: the ones who actually care about each other thus making the six weeks a proper holiday or the couples-of-convenience interested strictly in winning.
PS Sophie will dump Tom before their plane reaches the gate.
