I did say that yesterday!!! But in fairness Jess is doing the same and I think it was in part to ensure she wouldn't get immediately pied the next day, and in an odd way sparing her feelings.

He knows how it would look crawling back to Jess, it would be far better for him to find a new girl to bring in, so that's what's making me think a bit deeper into his possible motivations.

Thing is I'm remembering before Naomi popped up that Max was saying what a revelation Jess was and she was sound and he was really enjoying her company and she was nothing like he'd thought. I'm starting to think despite clearly fancying Naomi more, he did actually have growing feelings for Jess and the lad talk was for the viewers to justify pieing her for Naomi "a girl he could fall in love with"

He puts it very crudely but whilst it's obvious Jess adores him, she's stated its just fun as well (obviously to prevent hurt pride as she clearly likes him too)

My theory is that had Naomi stuck with Josh a little longer not only would M&J have developed further, but that Max might not have been swayed by Naomi at all.

It's entirely possible you are right. That is my instinct about him too but I'm exploring other possibilities as there was a period right up until Naomi turned his head that he was really into her.
