I am not going to list the various drug and other scandals that have gone on over the years.
However I see your point.

But I still think there was no need to kill off the character for good - he could simply have left.
But TPTB treated all of the legends (apart from the screeching banshee) like dirt, Pauline, Pat, Den, Steve etc.
