It's all about control with Phil. He wanted her to be put off and therefore still reliant on Phil for support.

He looked old enough to be her father. Sharon is mid forties, this guy looks early sixties so about right.

I'm guessing Phil has discovered by now that Kathy's husband Gavin is Sharon's father but because Kathy and Gavin are supposed to be dead he obviously cannot afford to have Sharon find out. This Gordon bloke was to serve as a distraction. He wanted Sharon to take one look at him and reject him, return to Walford and drop the search altogether.
Perhaps he found out the truth. And perhaps the truth is ugly and scary. Fingers crossed Den Watts is Sharon's bio dad.

I believe this too. It's too much of a coincidence that Sharon's father is called Gavin, whilst Kathy is secretly meeting Phil and mentioning her Gavin.

At first it did sound ridiculous - a bloke Kathy married in South Africa turns out to be her ex-husband's new wife's dad. However if you think about and piece together what we've been told its not that much of a stretch. Den's solicitor recently confirmed to Sharon that her adoption was done privately and Den personally knew her biological father. Now Kathy moved to South Africa in 1998 to live with her brother Ted who already resided there, Ted and Kathy had grew up in Walford and knew Den when they were kids. So its now looking very likely that the mysterious Gavin was also an old friend of Den and Ted when they were young - hence the adoption of Sharon. And Kathy marrying an old mate of her brother is entirely plausible.

Also Sullivan is a Walford surname - as in Dan Sullivan.
Because Sharon promised to leave him once he found her dad. In his shoes I'd pay absolutely anyone to get rid of Sharon for a wife.

Hardly matters.
Estelle Getty was one of youngest actors in 'The Golden Girls' but played the oldest character. She actually played Bea Arthur's character's mother despite being younger than her by a few years I believe.
The actor who played the Grandpa in 'Chitty Chitty Bang Bang' was also younger than Dick van Dyke who was playing his son in the movie.
