Me and my boyfriend are playing together, taking turns, and we have a character that looks like him with his name. One thing I don't get though, is isn't the game supposed to know 100s of name so Codsworth can address you by it? Well, it doesn't recognise his name, Nick, even though Nick is the name of one of the other characters

Haven't even got to build a settlement but I have the silver shroud costume....yeah baby! I don't like the Minutemen, I don't want to help I like the freaks and want to join the boddies. I tried to kill the black dude at the beginning.
Here's a question for peeps.... ...have you made your person yourself and called it your name or have you gone totally different. I have a black lady called Ren. My name isn't Ren and I'm not black. I thought Piper was glitched because she kept saying the same line over and over. Then it dawned on me she wanted to have a conversation. The detective is cool but his eyes scare me. |

Fallout 4 is definitely more difficult than FO3. You have to think more and be more resourceful I've found. I'm using far more of the radiation aid than I ever did in 3/NV, it seems radiation really matters here.
Found my first Super Mutuant camp. My word they've never been more terrifying. Having two normal mutants, a suicider(?!) and 3 mutuant dogs come tearing after you is frightening ![]() I haven't even made it to Diamond City yet! Also word of advice for anyone who wanted the Cryo gun back in Vault 111 (stored in the overseers areas behind a master lockpick)

I'll do another question... Has anyone bothered with the power armour? Mine has stayed on its bench since the mission you get it. |

No, I can't really see myself using the power armour unless I have to. I prefer running around and sneaking most of the time.

I got called Blue by the journalist so I guess Ren isn't on their books.

Yes, he is me. My character is a late-middle-aged bloke with grey hair and he's called Andy. So far I've only used the power armour once, at the museum fight in Concord. I prefer to do without. |

I know it's been asked before, but is there any point to building settlements other than indulgent busy-work? I like exploring but setting up a camp for aesthetic purposes doesn't really interest me. (No offense to anyone into that, just curious about the broader need.)

Well I'm playing as a striking female redhead with a scar and a bold attitude - nothing like me in real life! Will do another play through as a male, maybe a sneaky one.
Trying to do the first settlement thing and managed to build a shack, water pump, vegetable patch all ok. Then built a chair for Granma but have no idea how to give it to her. I tried putting in down in front of her, command her to it, putting it in the shack, putting it in a house, on a porch. Eventually gave up last night. Is it the wrong sort of chair? What am I doing wrong?

This confused me for a bit too. You have to build her a specific chair called "Mama's thingys chair". Its listed in a separate section from all the other chairs. You can then put it wherever you like and she goes and sits in it.
![]() She's a bit of a fussy one but I guess I might need her prophecies somewhere down the line so I'd better be nice to her

I did the same thing. I thought any old chair would do and then realised the mission wasn't disappearing. The solution above is what you need. It's the wasteland Grandma you're lucky I'm building you anything

I've created a Japanese looking guy with a Ronin style of haircut that I just thought looked rather good and I don't look like that at all. I've called him Dorian as recently I've taken to having all my characters called Dorian as that is going to be my son's name (due December 29th

I've been playing for several hours now. Initial impressions are mixed. The graphics are better than Fallout 3 but nothing special. Character animations and the faces on NPCs are bad. The writing and some of the voice acting are poor. No innovation since Fallout 3 apart from the house building which is straight from the Skyrim addon, and the new power armor. Enemy behaviour is more aggressive and there are more of them, which makes sneak feel pointless. Companion AI is absolutely terrible. Hardly any explorable buildings. Can't disable head bob or alter the narrow FOV on consoles.
On the plus side the music is great. Character creation is good. The new power armor is fun. Despite all its faults it's still fun to play. |

I feel the same. All this crafting stuff tends to leave me cold because it looks rather complex and time-wasting. I haven't the foggiest how to start building a shelter. But I want to help the minutemen and I think I may have to build stuff, I don't know.
The building thing I see is something when you have finished the main story then you can go around and fortify and tinker with the base building stuff......also will love to see what modders do with the game and especially the base building aspect. Amazing game so far, haven't had one crash and the loading times are about a quarter of the length I have with Skyrim.......there is no slowdown at all on my system NVidia 750ti gfx card so certainly not top end....although do have 16gb ram so I think that helps..... The NPCs have been made a lot more real and they make comments about your outfit and that you were wearing one outfit and now your wearing another..... |

I tend to go through my first play solo playing, I do in virtually all games (maybe apart from half life 2) find that companions are just a pain in games.....I do like to add companions on subsequent playthroughs and I tend to just say to them wait here or goto a place if I am on a sneaky mission. |

Thanks for that, Mariesam. I'll bumble along and take it as it comes. It's so similar to F3 but different enough to throw you a bit.
The new Mirelurks are tough as boots. On my way to Tenpines I stopped off to help the bloke with the water pump problem and we got jumped by a bunch of 'lurks. I ended up running off to find some health & rest and luckily it was all over when I got back and he gave me 50 caps. Dog took a beating though ![]() Lady at Tenpines has sent me to sort out some raiders. |

Anyone got any legendary loot yet? All I got was a leg piece of a legendary Ghoul.
My favourite is one I bought from Cricket (bit insane but I like her) outside Diamond City. It's called Pray & Spray - a silenced SMG that fires explosive rounds that deals AoE damage, so even if your target is in cover you can shoot at the wall/ground near them and damage them. Just got the Alien Blaster this afternoon. Was at the drive-in and saw something crashing down to Earth. Followed it's path and did some investigating. Quote:
It's certainly a damned sight tougher than F3 was. The first Deathclaw took me about 4 goes to kill, and that was while I was in the power armour and using the minigun.
Though about the same tactic when I came up on a Behemoth but decided to hide inside a bus and pop off rounds from my sniper until it died. Quote:
Yes it seems they have actually changed the game so items are actually needed this time around.
In Fallout 3 I never really used Chems or Rad Away etc, now I am using them cause without them I'd be a dead man. Plus the need for RadAway is high. Almost every enemy seems to deal radiation damage. Quote:

Went with Andrew and it worked (mine own name) but was tempted for a while by the idea of '****face' which is an option in the names. He's a slightly heavy set guy with eyebrows that always look surprised and I always pick the sarcastic options in dialogue. Bit like me. Ginger and bald. Not like me.
I'll do another question... Has anyone bothered with the power armour? Mine has stayed on its bench since the mission you get it. My new plan is to have multiple sets of PA. T-45b is at Sanctuary I have a partially built Raider PA in Cambridge. And now I've got Master Lockpicking I'm off to get the PA from the Military Academy. |

This game is seriously perplexing. The crafting and modding is extensive to say the least, yet the lack of skill points leaves a big gap in the game and the perk chart is pretty unimaginative. I can only think that both will be added/extended to via DLC.
