Granted I'm only 2 hours in to my first Fallout game.. but I'm starting to fear it just isn't a game for me. One of those "carried away by other peoples hype" scenarios I suspect. I'll give it some more game time but it just feels a bit dated and clunky to me. Can't believe I'm saying that about a 2015 game.

I know it's been asked before, but is there any point to building settlements other than indulgent busy-work? I like exploring but setting up a camp for aesthetic purposes doesn't really interest me. (No offense to anyone into that, just curious about the broader need.)
I've got perks that give me rare materials from weapons and help me mod stuff better, so I needed a place to put all the crap I needed for that. Not sure if raiders can nick the contents of your drawers, but apparently, they can nick your power armour! DIdn't plan on building a lot, just started on that red rocket truck stop and got a bit carried away! Before I knew it, I had settlers turning up all over the place, have 15 here, so had to sort out water, food, beds etc... it's unrecognisable now, it's like a fortress with turrets, guard stations, three big buildings all crammed in, that go up to that bridge on top with more turrets, and then a small farm. Then I got to sanctuary and realised I didn't have any of my stuff, which was really annoying, and the only way I could get it was to either carry it all manually to every new settlement, or set up supply lines, so then I sort of built up Sanctuary too Now I've got supply lines going all over the wasteland, so I have my equipment at every settlement I find. Also, there is some settlement building in the missions, so if you know what you're doing, those missions are a bit easier and more satisfying. |

This game is seriously perplexing. The crafting and modding is extensive to say the least, yet the lack of skill points leaves a big gap in the game and the perk chart is pretty unimaginative. I can only think that both will be added/extended to via DLC.
On a side note: Seems I've fixed the issue with not being able to place settlement objects. Went into Forza 6 to download my weekly credits and when I cam back to Fallout I could once again build things. Sanctuary's defences could hold off a small army now. Food, water and beds for all. (I built loads just in case the glitch happens again and switching games doesn't fix it.) |

I can't see it myself but then I am, admittedly, a fan boy when it comes to Fallout or Elder Scrolls. My advise would be to give it a good, uninterrupted, chance. At least 3 or 4 straight hours where you can get to grips with it. If you still feel the same at least you can trade in and recoup some cash. |

I spent ages making my character look the way I wanted to only for him to in a mask in every talkie bit now.
Piper always gives be a treat every time I'm 1 item away from being over encumbered. |

The only enjoyable element for me was exploring the world, listening to music and having the odd shootout, but that only lasts so long. It's back to Witcher 3 and Bloodborne for me. |

It's funny how we all see things differently, I think the graphics are pretty good, the wasteland looks fantastic.
But I should really stop building my house and do some missions lol. |

Me too, but you can't force it. For me it was a slow burner as well, but the missions now are really amazing, I've almost forgot what the main story is

Same here. Similar effect to F3 - at first you feel kind of resentful that you are constantly being pulled away from the main mission to attend to all the other stuff, but soon the other stuff becomes what you play it for.

I've not done any of the main mission, after building a settlement I got side tracked when I spotted a downed plane in the north east on way to Minutemen quest. Been fighting all sorts and finding lots of places, and ended up half way across the map. Surprised I haven't died recently as I'm only level 7, though I am running out of ammo for my modded pistol. Just looped back and arrived in Lexington - let's see what this has for me

I've made it to the institute so far on the main quest. Building the signal interceptor was a pain. If it isn't wired up just right. Then it doesn't work.
I did wonder why I was getting destroyed so easily by raiders last night. Then I realised I'd been running around in just a hat and sunglasses. I must have sold the armour I was wearing by accident. |

Starting this today, having never played any of the previous games. Infact I know very little about them and player opinion seems divided at the moment.
Any advice for someone new to the series? What sort of build should i be doing, fairly balanced from the starter points with everything around 4/5 but with lower charisma. Are there any OP builds and certain skills I should focus on? Can always restart if needed. Any do's and don't I should keep in mind? |

I try to walk everywhere (no fast travel) unless I'm in a big rush, as you find more stuff and meet more people that way. Just enjoy it and try not to die.....

I was struggling with ammo too, so I put a couple of ranks in the perk that gets you more ammo from containers and that helped a lot, as well as trying to use a lot of different types of guns. I also buy ammo for the best guns I have whenever I can.
Yeah the .38 ammo seems to be one of the weakest, I think that's also why it's the cheapest ammo to buy as far as I know. |

I managed to bring down a giant boss using .38 ammo. It took ages but thankfully he could not get to me as I was hiding in the entrance of a subway station.
