Granted I'm only 2 hours in to my first Fallout game.. but I'm starting to fear it just isn't a game for me. One of those "carried away by other peoples hype" scenarios I suspect. I'll give it some more game time but it just feels a bit dated and clunky to me. Can't believe I'm saying that about a 2015 game.

Depends on your playstyle.

I've got perks that give me rare materials from weapons and help me mod stuff better, so I needed a place to put all the crap I needed for that. Not sure if raiders can nick the contents of your drawers, but apparently, they can nick your power armour!

DIdn't plan on building a lot, just started on that red rocket truck stop and got a bit carried away! Before I knew it, I had settlers turning up all over the place, have 15 here, so had to sort out water, food, beds etc... it's unrecognisable now, it's like a fortress with turrets, guard stations, three big buildings all crammed in, that go up to that bridge on top with more turrets, and then a small farm.

Then I got to sanctuary and realised I didn't have any of my stuff, which was really annoying, and the only way I could get it was to either carry it all manually to every new settlement, or set up supply lines, so then I sort of built up Sanctuary too Now I've got supply lines going all over the wasteland, so I have my equipment at every settlement I find.

Also, there is some settlement building in the missions, so if you know what you're doing, those missions are a bit easier and more satisfying.

I doubt they'll add to it. I think once we are further in (I'm only lvl 20) we'll get the most out of it.

On a side note: Seems I've fixed the issue with not being able to place settlement objects. Went into Forza 6 to download my weekly credits and when I cam back to Fallout I could once again build things.
Sanctuary's defences could hold off a small army now. Food, water and beds for all.
(I built loads just in case the glitch happens again and switching games doesn't fix it.)

I think because of the dev time it was always going to be a little last gen. It was started over 5 years ago. I can't wait for the next ES game if this is the starting point for Bethesda this gen. Roll on 2017/18.
I can't see it myself but then I am, admittedly, a fan boy when it comes to Fallout or Elder Scrolls.

My advise would be to give it a good, uninterrupted, chance. At least 3 or 4 straight hours where you can get to grips with it. If you still feel the same at least you can trade in and recoup some cash.

I spent ages making my character look the way I wanted to only for him to in a mask in every talkie bit now.

Piper always gives be a treat every time I'm 1 item away from being over encumbered.

Just take the mask off. Fashion is always more important to me in games like this than actual armour protection

I put a good 8 hours into it and came to the same conclusion and uninstalled it a few days ago. The story, characters, dialogue, graphics, character models and animations are so sub-standard that i couldn't justify putting any more time into the game. If they can't be bothered then i can't be bothered.

The only enjoyable element for me was exploring the world, listening to music and having the odd shootout, but that only lasts so long. It's back to Witcher 3 and Bloodborne for me.

It's funny how we all see things differently, I think the graphics are pretty good, the wasteland looks fantastic.

But I should really stop building my house and do some missions lol.

Me too, but you can't force it. For me it was a slow burner as well, but the missions now are really amazing, I've almost forgot what the main story is

Same here. Similar effect to F3 - at first you feel kind of resentful that you are constantly being pulled away from the main mission to attend to all the other stuff, but soon the other stuff becomes what you play it for.

Agree, loving the humour in certain parts too, it's actually really well written for a game, reminds me of Mass Effect in that respect, it just gets the balance right.

Totally agree, played for the story at first and now I've done 1 story mission in the past two days

I've not done any of the main mission, after building a settlement I got side tracked when I spotted a downed plane in the north east on way to Minutemen quest. Been fighting all sorts and finding lots of places, and ended up half way across the map. Surprised I haven't died recently as I'm only level 7, though I am running out of ammo for my modded pistol. Just looped back and arrived in Lexington - let's see what this has for me

I've made it to the institute so far on the main quest. Building the signal interceptor was a pain. If it isn't wired up just right. Then it doesn't work.

I did wonder why I was getting destroyed so easily by raiders last night. Then I realised I'd been running around in just a hat and sunglasses. I must have sold the armour I was wearing by accident.

Dear God, I'm desperately short of ammo...

Starting this today, having never played any of the previous games. Infact I know very little about them and player opinion seems divided at the moment.

Any advice for someone new to the series? What sort of build should i be doing, fairly balanced from the starter points with everything around 4/5 but with lower charisma. Are there any OP builds and certain skills I should focus on? Can always restart if needed.

Any do's and don't I should keep in mind?

I haven't built anything yet, but the thing about Fallout games is that you can play them any way you please. There's no need even to take up the main story if you don't want. The only thing I would recommend is that you look at/in everything for useful stuff and find somewhere safe to store it. Don't forget where you've put it!
I try to walk everywhere (no fast travel) unless I'm in a big rush, as you find more stuff and meet more people that way. Just enjoy it and try not to die.....

If you have caps good neighbour is a good place to buy ammo. I have tons of .38 ammo. Unfortunately the guns that use that ammo seem rather weak. I usually loot the financial district (which is next to good neighbour) Then sell the gear to buy fusion cells from the robot and woman.

I was struggling with ammo too, so I put a couple of ranks in the perk that gets you more ammo from containers and that helped a lot, as well as trying to use a lot of different types of guns. I also buy ammo for the best guns I have whenever I can.

Yeah the .38 ammo seems to be one of the weakest, I think that's also why it's the cheapest ammo to buy as far as I know.

I managed to bring down a giant boss using .38 ammo. It took ages but thankfully he could not get to me as I was hiding in the entrance of a subway station.

You can eventually add points to the main perks if you feel you need to, as it isn't locked down. You just need experience points. It means a lot of trial and error to see what you like, but choosing lockpicking perks isn't a waste because they're a lot of safes with useful items.
