Another tip to regulate ammo usage is to adopt two completely separate loadouts and then alternate between them if ammo' starts getting scarce.

For example, have one loadout that comprises a .50 bolt-action rifle for sniping, a .45 combat rifle for the loud stuff and a 10mm pistol for CQB and another loadout that comprises a .308 boltie, a laser rifle and a .44 pistol.

That way if you start to run out of, say, .50 calibre ammo you can just swap completely to the alternate loadout and know that you'll be replenishing ammo for the opposite loadout as you go along.

To make it easier, I rename weapons using a different prefix to denote the different loadouts.

For example:-

- .50 Sniper Rifle
- .45 Combat Rifle
- 10mm Pistol

vs

> .308 Sniper Rifle
> Laser Rifle
> .44 Pistol

That way I know I just need to grab everything with a "-" prefix or everything with a ">" prefix and I'll be set to go.

Saves having to constantly faff around deciding what gun to use to replace one that's low on ammo and then potter about modding it to make it as good as the one you're currently using.

The U.S.S Constitution quest is so broken, on PC at least. Don't bother until it gets patched.

That's a shame and unusual for it to not work on PC but work on consoles

Where is this submarine that people have been finding? I am walking the coast looking out to sea but cant spot it. Does it only appear at certain times of the day?

The way I play is to have one of each type of weapon on me at all times, except heavy weapons which I don't tend to use anyway. Most of these use different ammo types and i've not had a problem running out of ammo yet.
I did get low on .308 as I modded a combat rifle to use it but just switched to combat rifle with .45 for a bit.
I don't use automatic as they just waste bullets and are not accurate enough for me.

I thought I'd found a bug in one of the Railroad quests last night but it turns out I'm just a moron.

I was doing the "recovering stuff from their old base" mission, went up in the lift and thought there was a problem with the lift exit.
Turns out it's just blocked by the rear of a bookcase because it's SUPPOSED to be a secret.
I don't think that counts as a spoiler because you DO get a prompt saying "slide bookcase" but you just have to be paying attention to see it.

I DID find one bug though:-
I got a "rescue the hostage" mission from the Minutemen.
Went to Revere Beach Station, massacred a pile of low-level Raider and freed the hostage.
I then got a message saying "Report your success to the settlers at Nordhagen Beach".
Trouble was that the map pointer isn't AT Nordhagen Beach.
Instead, it's just moving randomly around the map near The Castle.
I fast-traveled to The Castle and the map pointer was way offshore, somewhere between The Castle and Nordhagen.
I did another mission (taking Curie for a body-swap) and then checked back and the map pointer was back near Revere Station, fast-traveled there and it'd moved again.
This time I tried to follow it in real-time but the map pointer just seems to be moving around the map so fast that the player can't get near to it.
I'm not sure if it's supposed to represent you having to make contact with somebody that's moving but if so they're moving so damned fast that you're never going to catch them.
Given that the accompanying message is telling me I need to report to the settlers AT Nordhagen Beach, I think something is broken.

And, speaking of bugs, I'd recommend that players ALWAYS do a quick-save prior to using a lift.
I've got into lifts and then clipped through the floor and died 3 or 4 times so far, which can be rather annoying if you haven't saved the game for a while.

I got a game breaking bug today I had to go back 4 levels to an older save.

After getting the final stealth perk it broke my game, when ever I crouch I go invisible you know like the Predator movie that kinda look, and so was my Pipboy and weapons.

I have a habit of saving like every minute but I just forgot and went on a long run thinking it was meant to look like that.

2 potentially game breaking bugs
.
1st was when I was supposed to find Kellogg..I get to his room.....and hes already dead!. The synths just standing there. and my quest now says 'KIll Kellogg', even those he was dead.
I managed to get round that one by resurrecting kellogg using a console command (PC). he was immediately hostile and the synths became hostile. but I managed to kill him and them and all was well.

2nd one, which I cant get round. I'm visiting the Prwydwen for the first time..I'm supposed to talk to Lancer Captain Kells to continue, but the marker just points to the floor, no Kells! I tried spawning him using console, but he just stand there and wont answer me...I'm now stuck and cannot progress the BOS main quest line.
I even went back about an hour to a old save, but same thing happened.

In Skyrim you could use the "setstage" console command to bypass things that weren't working.

I haven't used it in F4 but if it's available you should be able to use it to just mark that segment as complete and skip forward to the next bit.

You weren't by any chance wearing chameleon armour were you? That makes you invisible when you crouch.

Just thought I'd ask...

Has anybody else here looked at the Pip Boy phone app' from Bethesda?

I finally got around to installing it on my phone last night, out of curiosity, and I must say that it works very well.

Ideally, I suppose you might want to have it running on a tablet so it's less fiddly but it really DOES interact with the game properly.

What's more, it's a great example of how games SHOULD be making use of mobile technology these days.
If Bethesda can create a phone app to do this, why can't we also have, say, phone app's that display objectives and inventory in first-person shooters, one that replicates a car dashboard in F1 sim's or cockpit instrumentation in flight sim's or displays inventory and resources in RTS games?

I have the phone app but using it for any length of time turns my galaxy s5 into a glowing inferno.

I was using my old Galaxy S3 and it wasn't too bad although it DID chew through the battery in under an hour.

I think a lot of phones, these days, are rather marginal as far as heat management goes.
It never ceases to amaze me the way a lot of reviews of things related to smartphones will say how terrific something is even though it actually caused the phone to shut down due to overheating - and they say that as if it's some minor glitch.

The problem seems to be that the phone manufacturers are engaged in a constant battle to cram more and more powerful hardware into their devices and I'd bet that they KNOW that hardware is only there to provide impressive specifications and isn't really capable of running for an extended period without overheating.

It's a bit like Volkswagen deciding to bung the engine out of a Veyron into a Lupo even though they know it'll overheat after about 5 miles and only has a fuel tank big enough to last 15 miles.

No just my usual gear, but it seems fine now, I saved right before adding the perk and so far good.

App works great on my iPad. I'm amazed at how the map works in perfect realtime, including the direction pointer spinning as I turn in-game.

Most useful for leaving a map open when roaming.

Just to repeat something I said already...

I am currently REALLY enjoying using a silenced .38 Combat Rifle as my main weapon.

I think you have to get up to level 39 (?) before you can craft a .38 receiver so you've probably got all sorts of other cool toys by then but .38 ammo is always the most common loot so it's well worth the effort of building yourself a top-of-the-range .38 Combat Rifle - especially if you've collected any unique or special Combat Rifles to modify.

I had a look at getting into all the chemistry stuff but I'm not convinced.
I found myself constantly running short of adhesive so I had a look at how you go about manufacturing it and it all seems rather convoluted to me.

In the end I found that it was MUCH easier just to build a bunch of market stalls in my base-camp (there's nothing to stop you building heaps of them) and then just flogging all my regular loot to my camp traders (each of whom will have around 300 caps per day to spend) and then I can go and BUY as much adhesive as I want from one of the traders who stocks it.

I admit that I DO feel as though it's "cheating" because I really want to be self-sufficient but it's just much easier than faffing around looking for specific ingredients and then refining them into useful items.

I had something similar happen, and it turned out the person I had to report to was someone on a supply chain. Took me a while to catch up to the guy.

That shouldn't have been the problem.
As far as I know, there's usually a named NPC to report to after a mission and you can't assign them to supply-convoys.
It's only generic "settlers" that can be assigned to supply chains.

Even so, I fast-traveled to get to a point within a couple of hundred metres of the contact and then headed toward it in real-time for a couple of minutes and then, when I checked the map, it was miles away.
I then had a quick battle with some super-mutants and then, when I checked the map again, the contact was at completely the opposite end of the map!

It definitely seemed like my contact was just warping randomly all over the map - up to the point where I got a message saying I'd failed the mission.

The only other thing that might be related is...
Spoiler

One other DEFINITE bug that I've had was in the "Diamond City Blues" mission.
I got up onto the roof of the fish-packing factory, found the terminal, tried to hack it and failed.
I then decided I'd just leave that mission until I was hanging around with Nick Valentine and let him have a crack at it.
I left it for a long, long time and then, when I finally bothered to take Nick to the fish-factory, the terminal had just plain vanished off the wall.

Eventually I had to google for a walk-through on how to solve the puzzle (I didn't get the note with the solution to the puzzle on it) to gain access to the drugs lab rather than use the terminal to bypass the puzzle.

My food and water keeps disappearing from my workbench. Is that because of supply routes? Are the provisioned sharing my stuff with other settlements? Annoying as I had stored loads of purified water

I've been lucky so far that I haven't had any major problems with the game. The thing I've find really annoying is the things I place on shelves and cabinets falling though them every time I come back.

I'm 20 hours into this gaming and absolutely LOVING it. Have barely scratched the surface - this will be more like Skyrim completion times, as Fallout 3 was about 60 hours to do near enough every quest IIRC.

It's better than Witcher 3 by miles, as far as I'm concerned. I enjoyed it but it never really felt like a GOTY to me. Fallout 4 has reminded me of the most important part of an RPG - exploration. Witcher 3 never really had that.

One thing I will say - it is a lot easier and more forgiving than Fallout 3 ever was. Ammo is everywhere, caps are easy to earn and there are few enemies who cause any real problems.

I'm having real trouble with ammo. I have 1000s of bullets for the minigun and the .50 action rifle (one of the underdogs in the game), but everything else i can barely reach 100 of. I spent 10k caps on ammo and was depleted again soon after, and I have lvl 3 Scrounger perk. It's pretty strange.

I actually think caps are useless in this game. Maybe it's because i'm playing Normal difficulty, but I don't have any real need to buy anything, and i've only been to a vendor a maximum of about 3 times. Everything is scavenged, and because of regeneration you will never be short on items.

I know what you mean; I found 6 fusion cores in just 2 footlockers, without trying and whilst just pootling about the Prydwen today. I now have about 20 of the bloody things. I also don't get vendor pricing structures, which seem all over the place.

That said I had to waste 2 mini nukes taking out the Mirelurk Queen; that acid sure stings...
