Understand that you can pick ANY perk on the chart when you level-up (except for the ones that are invisible), that you don't have to work your way down the chart in order AND that the chart scrolls downwards too.
Get rid of the horrid green light from your Pit-Boy.
Go into the options, scroll down the list and you'll find 3 sliders (red, green and blue intensity) that control the colour of your HUD and 3 more that control your Pit-Boy.
Set all the Pit-Boy sliders about 2/3rds of the way up and you'll get a nice white light when you use your Pit-Boy as a torch.
If you set them ALL the way up you'll get a brighter light but it'll create a lot of glare.
You can also twiddle with the HUD colours in a similar way if you want to.
The game doesn't offer much in the way of tutorials for construction.
Have a bit of a play with it but if you get confused, feel free to have a look for advice on the internet or ask here.
Read what all the perks do.
It's hard to be more specific without trying to tell you how to play (I might tell you to max-out all the sniper perks when you want to play as a ninja warrior) but read through ALL the perk descriptions to get an idea of what they do and how useful they might be.
For example, the AquaBoy perk stops you taking radiation damage in water and that's well worth getting as soon as possible.
You'll be forced to make use of pipe weapons and raider armor or leather armor at first (because it's all that's around) but don't waste too much effort upgrading any of it because it's all junk.
Feel free to have a bit of a play, just to become familiar with how crafting works, but don't go to a lot of effort to fully upgrade a pipe-rifle because it'll stick be useless compared to the first proper gun you find.
Use supply routes to link up your settlements.
You'll probably start off at a settlement somewhere up in the Northwest corner of the map and it'll have a workbench.
You store all your junk in the workbench and then the junk will automatically be used when you're crafting upgrades for guns and armour.
But here's the important part: If you create a network of supply route between all settlements then all your junk will automatically become available in EVERY workbench on the map.
Which means that when the people of Jamaica Plains are moaning because they've got no beds or defences, you'll automatically have access to scrap that you stored in Sanctuary Hills to build it for them.
