I think a lot of it is to do with whether or not you do things in the "correct" order or not.
I knew what to expect from a Bethesda game and I realised that a lot of the meat of the game was in the side-quests but, even so, on my first play-through I must've done things in roughly the order that Bethesda intended because I didn't seem to get any of these conflicts. What I was going to ask is how to get Danse's story/perk as it is taking me a lot longer than other companions (though I have not tried the one in the institute yet). Most companions seem to worship me pretty quickly but I have not got the perk with Danse yet. Is there something I should do as you said you missed it on your first play through? |

I spent ages with Strong for my companion and got the perk that he liked me so thought I'd swap the companions about a bit. Tried with Preston Garvey for a bit but he started annoying me disliking everything I was doing and telling me That killing people was beneath me 😆 So switched to Cait who I am liking at the moment.

She doesn't mind killing, stealing or general nastiness. On that note, has anybody noticed any particular notable differences between the way the followers ACT in Fallout 4? At the risk of labouring the comparison, in Skyrim you could give a follower a variety of different armor and weapons and they'd automatically equip the stuff that suited their character and they'd fight in a particular way too (they'd default to staves, bows, swords or war-axes etc depending on their fighting style). In F4 all the characters seem to have their own "morals" but they'll all just wear their own clothes and use their default weapons unless you tell them to equip something else. And then they all just seem to use what you've told them to - in a similar manner to each other. I suspect Strong might do things his own way (I've never used him as a side-kick) but, for the most part, it seems like most of the followers are pretty-much interchangeable in combat. Maybe I'm just imagining it but I THINK Deacon seemed like a bit of a coward in battle. Whenever a firefight started he never seemed to be around and, after a couple of days with him as a follower, I checked his inventory and he'd only fired about 30 rounds of the ammo I'd given him! Honestly, though, I never actually SAW him running and hiding or anything. I'm at level 78 and I use stealth a lot (with a silenced .308 exploding combat rifle) so most firefights tend to be over as soon as the baddies get in my crosshairs so it might just be that Deacon never really got a chance to show what he's made of. Anybody else noticed any particular traits in any of the followers? |

Performance in-doors has improved vastly since turning shadows and light down to High, without their being too much of a visual hit. I really like the location design in this game, some locations are deceptively huge that can take an extra hour to explore. Like the quarry that has an hidden underground area that I missed when i first encountered it, but only found for a quest to clear out raiders.
I don't know if the companions have unique traits or not. In my experience Codsworth, Piper, Dogmeat and Cait liked to get stuck in, but Strong and McCready would go AWOL in battle. Strong might as well be a radroach in a super mutant's body he's that useless. |

There's 2 different possibilities.
If you're trying to buy/sell stuff and you're only getting the "swap stuff with an individual" dialogue then it's probably just that the store is closed. I've found that store-owners will often still stand at their store (even doing the "shopkeeper" animations) when the shop isn't open, which can be quite confusing. In that case, you just need to wait until around 10am before trying to buy/sell stuff. If, on the other hand, a store-owner is just blanking you completely so you're not getting ANY dialogue options at all then that probably IS a bug and every time it's happened to me it's been fixed by either quick-saving/loading or waiting/sleeping for an hour. After that the dialogue options have been present again. |

It's the latter. I have tried sleeping, waiting and reloading and I check every time I go back to the settlement. No joy.
If it's one of your own stores you could try assigning the store-owner to farming and then assign a new settler to the store. Alternatively, if you're playing on a PC you could try using the "ResetAI" console command. Well, I destroyed the Institute again today and this time around I managed to do it without making enemies of the BOS, the Railroad OR the Minutemen. In the end, it's a bit of a hollow victory, though, because to do it you have to pretty-much side with the BOS (which means the Minutemen and the Railroad don't want much to do with you) AND you have to ignore Kells' constant demands that you assassinate the leaders of the Railroad, which means the BOS aren't entirely happy with you either. And then I managed to "break" the game a bit by picking a fight with Liberty Prime. I took a few shots at him from the Prydwen deck and then fast-traveled to Nordhagen Beach and he pursued me across the bay and then all the settlers at Nordhagen started shooting at him too. I tried luring him away from Nordhagen and it seems like every NPC in the game is hostile toward him - probably because he inflicts splash-damage from his nukes on everybody around. The wacky thing was, your settlers are un-killable and after a while they recovered and chased after Liberty Prime and attacked him again. By that time I'd realised what was going on and I've led him around 3 or 4 settlements and he's now got about a hundred settlers continually shooting at him, getting knocked-out and then carrying on the fight once they recover. It occurred to me that after you destroy the Institute by the path I chose, there's no reason why the Railroad quest "Rocket's Red Glare" couldn't still go ahead so you'd have the choice of siding with the BOS and attacking the Railroad OR siding with the Railroad and attacking the Prydwen. As things currently are, the ONLy way I can progress any further is to attack the Railroad. It would have been nice if Bethesda had realised there's no reason why you couldn't still do "Rocket's Red Glare" AFTER the Institute is destroyed, simply get rid of the BOS from the Commonwealth if you wanted to. I had big plans for playing around with settlements but, given that I've now got a giant killer robot waging war on anything that moves, I think it might be time to give up on this game and start again. Next time around I guess I'll side with the Institute to see how that turns out. |

That is my central problem with the way Bethesda programmed the game in terms of the four branching storylines. They presume that you will stick with one faction all the way through and never seemed to consider that players will want to do as many quests from every faction as possible until an obvious state of conflict occurs and you need to choose one to stick with. Instead of that they have drawn arbitary lines which are never quite made clear - I was made an enemy of the Railroad simply by starting a BoS quest which I wasn't given an option not to accept. There was still the obvious option of informing the Railroad of the attack, which Bethesda opted not to include. Worst of all though was the Minutemen - the defending the castle quest, which only involves two antagonistic parties (MM and Institute) and is, as the name suggests, a defensive rather than offensive mission, means you cannot complete Ad Victoriam with Liberty Prime for the BoS. Literally I had done everything necessary, all I had to do was press the button to send the big guy away - very, very frustrating, and quite simply bad programming.
First time around I don't think I spoke to Kells at all so it must've been Maxson who ordered me to assassinate Desdemona and the rest. After that I DID get the option of either following orders or to let Des' & co. know what the BOS had planned for them. IIRC, right after that the BOS attack the Railroad HQ and, if you're quick, you can defend one entrance AND then go to help Glory and ensure she survives too - only to have Des' give a big speech about how Glory sacrificed herself so the Railroad could survive while Glory is stood right beside her. On my 2nd play-through it was Kells who ordered me to attack the Railroad HQ and I thought "Oh, it'll be fine. I'll have the option of warning them instead" but, no. As soon as he'd finished giving me the mission I got a message saying "The Railroad are now your enemies". I reloaded an earlier save-game and then I spent the rest of my time avoiding Kells. You're right though. Obviously people DO have their allegiances but I suspect most people probably also want to just complete as many of the quests as possible. I guess the idea is to encourage people to complete 3 or 4 entire play-throughs to see it all but people are likely to have put a LOT of work into stuff like their character, settlements, trading, weapons and armor so it's rather frustrating to have to start all over again. I think it was either the Far Cry or Borderlands games that gave you the option, once you'd finished the main story, of starting again but WITH all the stuff you'd amassed during the current play-through. So, you'd be starting again but with your character at it's existing level (and all the baddies leveled to suit) and you'd keep your existing inventory too. It might have been nice if Bethesda had considered implementing some feature like that, perhaps. |

Had I wanted a Minuteman ending (the final quest, albeit an optional one, is to destroy the Brotherhood), I would not have made such an obvious base in the Prwyden. It would take a fair few journeys for me to transfer everything to a new base and I simply couldn't be bothered. So I've decided to forego the final Minutemen quest, and instead finished every secondary quest. Game completion time for all main missions and secondary missions came in at around 65 hours - just a little more than to complete the same for Fallout 3. |

I've had it with this game. My manual saves won't work & just constantly corrupt & the auto saves don't load when I click continue. When I go to load save, my manual saves won't work.
I'm doing a mission with Cait to get her clean & ive completed it 3 times now but whenever I start the game up, I'm back at the entrance to the vault & need to find the clean room again! I'm level 24 & I keep reaching level 25 after I kill one enemy but the trophy never pops either. Not had any problems with any other games, just this one. The save corrupted earlier in the game when I first reached Diamond City so I started over but I just give up now. |

I was doing a "rescue the hostage" mission in Faneuil Hall. After clearing the ground-floor I used my pipboy to check my inventory which, fortunately, generated an auto-save. I then went up the main staircase and triggered a booby-trap that blew me though the wall, put me outside the map and killed me. When the game re-started it decided that I was back outside Faneuil Hall again but in "limbo" (where I could only see the interior textures for Faneuil Hall) and it killed me again. Over and over. Eventually I managed to access the main menu and manually loaded the auto-save that was created when I used my pip-boy. Okay, back to normal. Phew! But then I moved and found that I was in free-fly mode and could just clip through Faneuil Hall anywhere I wanted. Not back to normal after all, then. Going into 3rd-person mode, all my character animations had stopped and I was just floating around with my arms up in the air. I ended up having to spend about half an hour with the console to bring my character back to life and get it working properly again. Even so, I seem to have permanently lost all the weapons and other inventory I was carrying at the time, which was rather annoying. Since the game effectively "stole" all that stuff from me I suppose I'd be justified to just use the console to conjure it all back up again but it shows you that the game can mess things up in a big way at times. Again, it's not a huge deal on the PC, where you have access to the console, but I think it'd be infuriating when playing on an XBox or PS4. |

I had a run of corrupted save files too but on the X1. Every time I loaded back up I got the text in the file name saying the save was corrupted. My last couple didn't corrupt but I've stopped playing F4 for now. Will have to see if all is good when I next play it.

I only keep a few save files, about 6 max. Once I make a new save I delete the oldest one. Stops bloating.

Lost a settlement
"you are no longer allied to this settlement" - very annoying! After all the crops I planted houses and turrets I built and now this? Does anyone know what I should do now? My inclination is to kill everyone and start again

![]() Not come close to this yet. Even after ignoring a couple of them completely. Is there any way you can access all the messages the game has displayed recently? I've lost track of the number of times I HAVE seen a message saying "Failed: Help defend [settlement] against attack", only to think that I wasn't even aware that they needed my assistance. All it takes is for one of those messages to flash up onto the top-left of the screen while you're distracted or there's a bright light at the top of the screen and you'll probably never see it. At least if you could review those messages you could make a point of checking them regularly. Ideally, it'd be nice if there was something in your pip-boy that flagged up a warning about anything that was reaching a "critical" point, such as a kidnap victim about to be killed, a settlement about to abandon you or a settlement being attacked. Basically, anything where the "timer" for the quest was about to run out. |
