He has now appeared in over 30 episodes I have one question to ask, what is Buster for? Because from what I have seen a talented actor has been given very little to do.

Its all far fetched. Shirley never mentioned him in her seven years on the show. Now suddenly it transpires she had two kids to the man and he is the ultimate love of her life.... who she no less goes back to each time he is released from prison... so all that lusting after Philth was for what???
Then there is Buster himself who despite only finding out Dean was his son 6 months ago it now seems the pair have a solid relationship and its like Kevin never existed to Dean. Yet Dean treated Shirley like crap for not being there for him.
So much of Shirley has been changed from what she originally was back in 2007/2008 it really shows when you watch it all back. There is an EE blog, I'm not sure if it still exists but the writer had it all spot on in how much of a retcon it really is. She even posted clips on there to prove it.

We are starting to see Buster interact with more characters now but at the moment is embroiled in the rape story and also will be involved within the Roya/Jade story. If Buster is more than a plot device for Dean then I imagine we will see more coming up for him in the future. I would like to see him (and him and Shirley) not being defined by Dean. Does anyone know if Buster is a full-time regular character? Or how long Karl Howman is staying? I like Buster, they should keep him.
I don't think Shirley/Buster is a retcon - we didn't know anything about Shirley's life prior to Kevin and we don't know much about her life with Kevin or even after Kevin, before she came to the square and it's not unbelievable that Shirley would have had other partners, we knew nothing of Dean's father, just like we know nothing of Carly's father so I don't find it too hard to believe. However I would like them to explain a bit more about Shirley/Buster's history so we can get a fuller picture. Shirley isn't the kind of character/person to divulge alot of info so it's believable that she wouldn't have mentioned Buster, she never mentioned her family but she would have had one out there. Although Buster didn't exist earlier on, I think they have explained it relatively well.
I think it should have taken longer for Buster and Dean to bond but I guess it wasn't Buster OR Dean's fault that neither of them knew of each other, same with Mick. Kevin has been mentioned several times by Dean and he still refers to himself as a Wicks so Kevin hasn't been whitewashed completely.

A retcon is when an established piece of history is changed to accommodate new information, but Dean's father and Shirley's life before Kevin was never established so although Buster has been added on, he isn't technically a retcon.

Shirley having a never mentioned before son who she clearly adored more than Carly or Dean is a retcon just like Buster being the love of her life is. If Shirley loved Buster so much why was she like a dog in heat around Phil even though he moved on several times.

I'm not disputing that Mick is a recent addition but Mick being Shirley's son isn't a retcon either. Mick's existence doesn't alter any established facts from Shirley's past and therefore is not a retcon. Shirley would have had a family out there, just because she didn't talk about them, doesn't mean they didn't exist. It kind of works with Shirley because she isn't the type of character to reveal much about her past. But we were discussing you saying Buster was a retcon, not Mick.
Maybe Phil was a Buster substitute? Even if that's not the case, people can love more than one person in their lifetime so it is completely acceptable that Shirley loved both Buster and Phil. (and Kevin)

Transferring her feelings for buster onto Phil. Buster is obviously Shirley's first love. Maybe she likes the way she feels when she is with him? I think their relationship is sweet. Yes, she chased Phil around but maybe it was just because buster was banged up and Kevin was dead. Killing loneliness
Buster is growing on me, but part of me wishes that Dean's biological father was David Wicks. That was speculated a little bit about 3 and half years ago. Given how messed up the current Carter storyline has turned out, making Dean part-Beale might not have been the worst decision. The character is an odious creep now. If he was David's son, he'd have to put up with gobby Bianca as a half sister before she left
