Is Sonia Fowler the least convincing lesbian in soap ever?

They both are. And Luisa is an actual lesbian.

I think they're limited a bit by the watershed when it comes to the Tina/Sonia relationship. You don't even see the two of them cuddling or even kissing each other on the cheek much, which I think would go a long way in making them seem believable as a couple. They seem more like good friends to me.

Watershed doesn't seem to stop Emmerdale or Hollyoaks (not sure about CS). Unless I'm naive and it's different for BBC to ITV?

completely unbelievable. Most lesbian couples I know, have a male partner, in the sense that one is more in charge & the other is a more traditional submissive type ( female) So with Tosh, she was obviously the "male" so to put the two submissives together doesn't make sense when viewed through RL lenses. But Ok for soapland, I guess. Yes, great friends, but no sexual chemistry.

Because she's arguably not a lesbian. Bisexual seems to be a toxic word in soaps.

And even then, your sexuality doesn't dictate how you act or behave.

Sonia's development has been appalling. She was clearly established as a straight character for years. They than did the ridiculous Naomi/Sonia storyline which caused a lot of complaints from fans due to it not fitting with Sonia's previous character development and appearing to be just a ratings grabbing storyline. Sonia than went back to Martin for years. Martin and Sonia went through a lot together and were clearly shown to meant to be together (they were similar to Kat/Alfie). They even left with a happy ending in a cab together with "robot" Rebecca.

On return to the square DTC seemed determined to destroy the Sonia/Martin pairing and virtually made all their previous storylines and their romance redundant. Martin suddenly was written as highly uncaring and neglectful. This appeared to be due to James Alexandrou not wanting to return, but this continued when Martin was recast and returned. They even had a ridiculous speech about them not being meant for each other and never loving each other (literally sh***ing all over their past development and all they had been through to be together (e.g. Jamie's death, Martin's stalker, getting over Sonia's affair, Pauline, Pauline's death and the police's suspicion of Sonia, the Rebecca storyline)). Sonia than started developing feelings for Tina (because in soaps two people that are gay/bisexual can't live in the same place and not fancy one another), but than slept with Fatboy. It was weird how the fans suddenly accepted Sonia as bisexual/gay despite thinking this to be out of character previously. There was than the bizarre development where Sonia thought it was perfectly acceptable to not only start dating again, but to move her new girlfriend into her house within days of dumping Martin and than acted all hurt and shocked when her daughter was horrified, talk about selfish and insensitive. That is before you factor in the fact that she also slept with Martin again. The whole Sonia storyline is a mess.

I really like Tina and definitely like to watch storylines involving her. I just wish they hadn't involved her with Sonia and had introduced a new girlfriend for her.

I actually like Sonia more when Tina is around. They have his strangely good chemistry.

Well fist of all they should 'act' like they're interested in women. That's generally the first rule of lesbianism.

No doubt it's because of the watershed that they won't put too much emphasis on the intimate/sexual side of their relationship, but on the other hand, considering how equal everything is meant to be now, what would the watershed have to do with anything?

I mean, it's a bit like them saying, they don't want to show gay kissing before 9pm, but then they'll show straight kissing no problem.....

Me personally, I don't mind if they don't show much gay kissing, doesn't do an awful lot for me! But it does seem a bit hypocritical of the producers.

Completely agree with your post.

To me, they have absolutely no chemistry whatsoever, they don't seem to "fit" together, and they don't work as a couple.

I think it may be that the actress who plays sonia might be uncomfortable with the gay scenes hence why the awkwardness shows on screen.....

I think you should post photos of what you get up to Toni.

Only for my personal research purposes of course!

I'm sorry, but that's a pretty outdated way of looking at things.

The very best portrayal on television of lesbian love and relationships was the sadly discontinued BBC3 drama Lip Service. I haven't got a gay sinew in my body but due to the excellent acting in that series I have a far better understanding of 'how lesbians behave', i.e. just the same as you and I when they're in mixed company!

Of course EastEnders couldn't possibly emulate the levels of perceived realism that Lip Service brought to the screen, it's on far too early in the evening, although I do think the watershed is starting to become a little outmoded, since all these programmes can be a) recorded/downloaded or b) watched later on the catch-up services.

I agree with you that they have made Sonia storyline laughable, the beginning was the Sonia/Naomi arc which lead to the storyliners backtracking and that's why I was surprised at DTC seemingly bringing her back for the Tina storyline. I like Tina, I also like Sonia but the arc of this storyline is all wrong and I'm not sure whether it is salvagable or not?

sonia is bi.

eastenders needs to address this by when the next chatacter refers to sonia is gay she can blurt out shes bi and unless a biphobia storyline happens it dont. im sick of her being refered to as now gay. its offending to bi people like myself. its something soaps all need to address.

It sadly seems to happen in soap, when a character has so much as a brief dabble with the same sex they're assumed gay :/ Soaps rarely seem to realise there's a thing called bisexuality that sits between gay and straight...

Its because people who are both gay or straight dont believe anyone can be capable of falling for eother and it was to be 1 or the other. Irs quite offending for me and other bi-sexuals. I wosh a soap would explore bi-phobia. Homophobia gets alot of attention in the media whereas bi-phoboa is overlooked and outcasted by both main sexualities as both gay and straight people are bi-phobic.

I have have no issue with the concept of bi provided they are not cheating, nd I am the same with gay or straight couples. I believe in monogamy in general, but if people are happy with an "open" relationship and both parties understand and consent to the rules that's fine but cheating and lying I can't, don't want to and won't ever defend. I am gay btw
