Not so much if Gavin is a friend of Ted Hills and that's how Kathy and Gavin met or reconnected in South Africa, if Gavin was known to Ted and Den then at least it might, if written properly make sense of the Kathy return storyline. If it's all random and without past connections between the characters it won't make any sense and will be difficult to swallow. If Kathy was forced to fake her death to protect herself and Ian/Ian's family back in Walford because her husband was connected to Walfords gangland criminals and had somehow pissed off the wrong person who was threatening retribution then it could make sense if written properly, it could also unfortunately be a load of rubbish.
