Hoping he is one of many upgrades this pre season.
Welcome to Liverpool and who would have thought Ian Ayre could get this done so quickly ![]() Am glad his not going to be the scapegoat as usual when we fail to sign a player. |

You never know how new players are going to work out but in this case the club has acted quickly to bag a potentially great player at a reasonable price (assuming Sterling ends up going for over £40m). Well done to all those involved. Can't ask for more. I think we've learned from last summer.

Well if Coutinho and Firmino can play together for Brazil there's no reason they can't do it to great effect for Liverpool either. If Brazil make the final of the Copa America though, then both these guys could miss the first game or two in the PL.

It's why I think BR was let down last year and I think FSG recognised that and have made structural changes to ensure that the club gives itself the best opportunity to get targets accepting not everyone will come off. In one way the sterling saga has become irrelevant as the club are moving on with business regardless of what man city or sterling want. |

Just seen someone post this on FB:
Deluded Brendan @DeludedBrendan 18m18 minutes ago The addition of Firmino gives us a great looking front line. Markovic, Ings, Lallana, Firmino, and Sturridge MILFS |

Great signing, Firmino isn't a prolific goal scorer and I don't see him as a player to lead the line necessarily, but he can play anywhere in the front four and is quality.
Pepe Reina has just moved on a free to Napoli, I'd have been tempted to bring him back.. |

When Ian Ayre boarded a flight from Manchester to Santiago via Paris on Monday afternoon his mood was one of cautious optimism.
The Liverpool chief executive had been given sufficient encouragement that a deal for Brazil international Roberto Firmino could be done that he decided to embark on the 7,250-mile journey to South America. The Reds were willing to meet Hoffenheim’s demands for the 23-year-old attacking midfielder with a fee of £21million up front with a further £8million to be paid in add-ons. But there was much work to be done. Ayre’s sizeable task was to convince Firmino that his future lay at Anfield. Liverpool had been here before in recent years and endured regular bouts of bitter disappointment as marquee signings slipped from their grasp. Deals for the likes of Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Willian, Diego Costa, Mohamed Salah, Yevhen Konoplyanka, Alexis Sanchez and Memphis Depay had all floundered for a variety of reasons to leave fans cursing the Reds’ inability to get prized targets over the line. Liverpool knew that Firmino had his heart set on a move to England but there were doubts about whether they could get him. Would their lack of Champions League football count against them? For all the positive vibes from the player’s camp, were they merely using the Reds’ pursuit to smoke out interest from elsewhere? Liverpool were aware that both Manchester United and Manchester City were also keeping close tabs on him. There was also the small matter of Brazil being in the midst of a Copa America campaign and preparing for Saturday’s quarter-final showdown with Paraguay. Liverpool had to be respectful to Dunga’s preparations. After completing the 17-hour trip, Ayre immediately set about negotiating with Firmino’s representatives from the ROGON agency in Santiago – Chile’s capital city where the Brazilians are currently based. Things moved quicker than anyone at Anfield had envisaged. They thought the best they could hope for this week was a deal in principle, a verbal agreement until after the Copa America, which while welcome would have left Liverpool vulnerable to a late offer from a rival. But moving swiftly and decisively, Ayre was able to go much further. Helped by a ringing endorsement of life at Anfield from Firmino’s Brazilian team-mate Philippe Coutinho, personal terms were quickly agreed on a five-year contract. A buoyant Firmino was ready to sign on the dotted line. By 9pm UK time on Tuesday the deal was in place and with the loose ends tied up overnight – including the relevant paperwork sorted out with Hoffenheim – Liverpool were in a position to announce the news of landing Firmino at 7am today. He will fly to Merseyside to undergo a medical following the completion of the Copa America. The Reds must also secure a work permit for him but don’t envisage any problems on that front. There were issues with third party ownership with Hoffenheim only buying part of his economic rights when he joined them for 4million euros from Figueirense in his homeland in 2010. As a result the German club will have to pass on a chunk of that initial £21million fee to other investors. All the reaction to the Reds' new signing But Firmino, who was watched extensively by the Reds’ European scouts last season, is Anfield bound and jubilant Liverpool officials believe they have pulled off a major coup. Boss Brendan Rodgers was desperate to bolster his attacking options with real quality this summer after the Reds lacked a cutting edge for so much of last season. And Firmino, who does his best work as an attacking midfielder playing behind a striker, fits the bill. He netted 47 goals in 151 games for Hoffenheim and has already scored four goals in nine internationals for Brazil since breaking into the squad last year. Roberto Firmino: only James Rodriguez has been involved in more goals from midfield in Europe His tally of 21 assists over the past two seasons is more than any other Brazilian in the top five European leagues. Only Wolfsburg’s Kevin De Bruyne (74), exceeded Firmino’s tally of 69 key passes from open play in the Bundesliga last term. He creates and he scores. Crucially, he also has an excellent fitness record having played in 33 of Hoffenheim’s 34 league games over each of the past three seasons. Time will tell whether he can quickly adapt to the demands of the Premier League and give Liverpool an instant return on their significant investment. But securing his services represents the first real statement of intent from the Reds that they are serious about mounting a top-four push and getting back to challenging for honours. It also suggests that lessons have been learned from previous windows. With Firmino the fifth signing of the summer, Liverpool are getting their business done early and with a minimum of fuss. |

He's a quality attacking midfielder and his goal return is decent for that role but he'll be almost competing directly with fellow Brazilian Coutinho to play there - not a bad thing as Coutinho was over-worked last season and faded in and out. Having one or both available is a huge improvement. And he's played in a physical European league for a while so the Premier League won't be a massive culture shock. A busy player who'll occupy defenders on and off the ball ( are you listening, Mario?). Excited! He's dentally similar to Suarez I notice...
That would see a real energetic front 4 which can press like hungry lions. |

I can see is playing 4-2-3-1 Sturridge up top with Firmino, Coutinho and Lallana behind.

And with Hendo and Milner in centre mid, there's no refuge for the opposition - if the team clicks and plays high tempo, it could be back to the thrills of 2013/2014 and a real tilt at top 4. Can't wait. Milner for Lallana with Can central is also an option. Would like Clyne in too.

I'm glad we learned from our mistakes of trying to get cheaper players and eventually loosing them to other teams let's hope the same goes for Bacca and Rondon

Like many I am struggling to work out what our best eleven and formation is - but that is not a bad thing as to sign good players which Firmino must be (though I confess I have never seen him play!!) who will give us plenty of options can never be a bad thing.
My dream of Lovren, Mario and Sterling being out the club or if not at least not being key players in our plans seems to be coming true as line ups without them seem formidable. The sale of Sterling to MCFC for up to 50m will mean that the outlay is not overall that great - make it happen asap please!! What now - do we need more in? - I would love a top quality striker - Bacca maybe - to give Sturridge real competition for his place altho I also take the view that if Ings does well when played early on then he should be kept in even when Sturridge is fit. Despite having reservations over the necessity of getting him (simply as we have so many other possibles for RB) I think Clyne would be a good addition and it does seem like that is likely to happen. I also worry over Moreno defensively. I remain a bit uneasy over the CB options if Sakho and Skrtel the obvious first choices are not available - Illori, Toure, Gomez, Lovren (lol!!), Wisdom and even putting Can there again are the options (but really I want Can in MF and I am sure that he wants to be there too) - I guess it depends how well Illori and/or Gomez do but bringing another solid dependable option in like say Chesters from Hull for say 10m may be worth considering. Overall tho I am feeling far better about us now than I was when the season ended - but the proof of the pudding will come when we actually see how we play in some matches and where us and other clubs are at the end of the window in terms of who comes and who goes out cos for sure other teams will be very active too. |

Gerrard has given an interview to BT Sport, in which he admits that being left out of the starting line up for the away Madrid CL match led to him deciding to leave.

Rodgers made the right decision to leave him out after Madrid's midfield ran rings around him in the game at Anfield. We played better without him in the away tie.

Some say that we did quite well at RM - and maybe we did in a way but the fact is that RM won in a canter without breaking sweat and we did not even look like scoring and hardly had an attack worthy of the name coming off happy to lose 1-0. I do not want to see LFC teams playing with that mentality - and I am sure SG feels the same and hence his unhappiness over what went on. |

You are doing your business nice and early, and getting some good players for very decent prices, well done on that.
With these signings, you look like that you will be pushing us a lot closer in terms of a top four spot. |
