Hope we do get Clyne, or certainly a right back anyway. Emre Can can not fill in any longer.

Makes a change from the finders fee we should've got from Tottenham for half of their squad over the years.

Hi Eds, cheers for all the good work. Such a reliable source amongst all the baloney out there. Brendan was against Firmino last season, yet couldn't stop the signing of Mario who he also didn't want. Seems they've kinda silenced him this time.
Do you think origi will be loaned out again? Hope he is, still not good enough for the prem. Dingus Khan {Ed001's Note - I am told it will be assessed in preseason and a decision made. Until they get a good look at him with our players, they are not sure. But then no one is even sure who is making the decisions right now, so it really could change at the drop of a hat.} Can you explain a little closer on what you mean with "no one is even sure who is making the decisions right now"smile emoticon? Thx in advance ed01. lisv85 {Ed001's Note - well the transfers are not Rodgers' decisions. The review has clearly removed him from that facet of the manager's role. That much is sure. I am just not sure who is actually now making the decisions, as someone is clearly acting on the scouts' recommendations. For instance Firmino, as Ed002 and myself have been saying for a long time, was of interest to the club, but Rodgers was the one who was against him being brought in, so he was not signed last summer. I would normally think it was the committee taking full control of transfers, but I was told that the committee was also seen as a failure by the review. The problem is that FSG are keeping everything locked down, leaks would be met with instant dismissal, so it is proving difficult to find out who is making the decisions. I don't know if Ed002 knows, but right now I am completely in the dark over it.} |

Firmino's full name - Roberto Firmino Barbosa de Oliveira.
Fancy having that on your shirt.

Can anyone who has signed up to the LFC Fixtures Calendar tell me if it's produced any fixtures yet?
I've signed up but I can't see ANY fixtures at all - don't know if it's a fault or if they just haven't done them yet. |

I must admit I did not see the first leg as I was away - some would say I was lucky - I could not possibly comment!! - but the way BR and LFC approached that second leg was all wrong to me. For the first time ever in my 50 years of following the club we effectively gave up before we took the field. SG is a player for big games and away at RM is a big game - when the CL draw was made it would have been the game he was most relishing and to not be selected for it must have hurt deeply. Many of us thought so at the time and this interview confirms it.
Some say that we did quite well at RM - and maybe we did in a way but the fact is that RM won in a canter without breaking sweat and we did not even look like scoring and hardly had an attack worthy of the name coming off happy to lose 1-0. I do not want to see LFC teams playing with that mentality - and I am sure SG feels the same and hence his unhappiness over what went on. True, they didn't have to try very hard to win the 2nd game either, but it was abundantly clear that we couldn't put out a side to outplay them. We just didn't have the quality. Instead, we kept our shape and looked to release Borini on the break. Not an ideal strategy but I believe the alternative option was Balotelli, and we all know how hard he would have worked. After the game I recall people saying we could have got something from the game if we'd set up differently but that's impossible to say. Real Madrid are the sort of team that can look as if they're coasting but still up their game when necessary. Perhaps if Gerrard had played a little better vs Basel at Anfield we'd have made it into the knockout stages and he'd feel differently. |

Rodgers made the right decision to leave him out after Madrid's midfield ran rings around him in the game at Anfield. We played better without him in the away tie.
It was an uncomfortable watch at Anfield - his mental scars from the previous season seemed to accelerate his decline sadly. He's admitted it still haunts him. |

Sterling, Ibe, Coutinho, and Markovic take "dizzy pens" with RedmenTV:
https://m.youtube.com/watch?feature=...&v=5BTUd7cgRJk They did this and other videos at Melwood a while ago but only just uploaded this video, and haven't uploaded others yet. Others might be subscriber exclusive, but I'd recommend it for £2 a month, which funds things like this, and the first month is free, and you can unsubscribe at any time. |

Real Madrid at home was an equally big game where Madrid swept us aside without ever hitting top gear. Gerrard was anonymous as Ronaldo and co made him look statuesque with their incisive passing and quick movement. 3-0 didn't flatter them at all.

I hope lessons have been learnt all round. The good thing is (I hope) that this situation will never be repeated as I hope that with the squad we are now putting together we will be able to compete in Europe against anyone and play for a win every time. |

Apparently we have sold Coates to Sunderland for £4m, tbh I had forgotten he was still one of ours.

Coates going is not unexpected and is not the end of the world - but I would have kept him - for me he is superior to many of our other defensive options altho yes Skrtel and Sakho have to be the first choice CBs.
Remember Coates played a key role keeping out a rampant AFC attack near the end of the season thus helping his club avoid relegation - whereas our defence were torn apart by them just a few weeks earlier. The Sunderland defence with Seb playing also kept 4 (or was it 5 - I have not looked it up) consecutive clean sheets as the club beat the drop and imo for them to get him for 4m is a bargain. However with the way our squad is developing now is not the time to start being too negative about BR and so whilst I still have many reservations we have to praise the good he is doing and back him and the team 100% all the time to get the results once we actually start playing matches. That is what he will be judged on - another season like last one will not be acceptable and he will know that |

The signs have started to go up, even for me, it seems strange to see him in a different teams shirt other than your own!

To be fair, looking at a Sunderland forum, they're not THAT enthuased about having Coates. The majority seem to agree that the price is fair enough for a player of that quality, but they're not convinced by him at all.
I have to say, Ilori does look like the better prospect, and I hope we finally get to see him perform in a Liverpool shirt this season. It's time for him to try and make an impact in the team now, another loan would suggest to me that he won't ever be ready. Besides, we have absolutely no pace in the centre of our defence as it is, so Ilori already has that one quality that no one else in the squad has. If we play with a high line, his ablilty to get back and recover could prove crucial. Ideally, I'd like a back 3 of Ilori, Skrtel and Sakho, with Moreno and Clyne providing the width as wing backs. Lots of pace there, with the 2 S's providing experience and strength. |

I don't understand why everyone seems so convinced by Ilori. He is a young player who has never played for us at all, I don't think he's even played in the reserves very often. He's had two loan spells, one in Spain playing for a team who only got on TV when playing Real or Barca etc... and then at a Serie B team so no one here can say they've seen him play regularly.
I hope he gets a chance in pre-season to prove himself before throwing him straight in. |

Can't see it being a three this season. That was done as a necessity and I think a 4 at the back is Rodgers preferred choice. Mike Bernard on twitter says out link to Hernandez is real and the club want him and Benteke. |

With Llori coming into the squad this season we had to sell Coates. I'm hoping Lovren gets sold as well.
To sell a guy who Is a full international with quite a lot of PL experience who did very well in the latter part of last season when on loan as we are bringing a young player into the squad who plays at Under 21 level and has yet to play a single minute for the LFC first team or indeed in the PL does not strike me as a sensible decision. The only way Coates had to be sold was if he demanded to go as we could not guarantee him first team football - I am not aware of that being the case. Mind you all the vibes he must have had from BR must have told him that the manager did not rate him so I do not blame him for moving on. For me had he stayed he would have been the first option behind the 2 first choice CBs. (and yes we have to go back to a back 4 with 2 CBs and 2 FBs asap - the 3 CBs at the back was an emergency short term option) I wish Seb luck at Sunderland. Btw this is not an anti Ilori post - I wish him even more luck seeing as he is a LFC player not a Sunderland one - its just that at present as Clarky says he is totally unproven as far as the LFC first team and the PL goes.

Edit to add: is there really enough space in our squad for both Wisdom and Ilori? I would say at least one of those guys will be going out on loan again. If it's Ilori, then he needs to go to a UK side either in the Championship or SPL ( notice Ward off to Aberdeen today) as we need to find out if he can play British style football. |
