Because we could get Caulker within days to be contingency in an acute defensive injury crisis - very, very short term. We meed to replace and upgrade defenders longer term and Caulker wasn't brought in for that reason at all.

Just realised we play Man City on the 28th Feb at Wembley, then on the 2nd March they come to Anfield for a league match!

Could be very interesting!

So long term Matip could be signed for a free in the summer as we don't need him right now hence why I don't believe a bid to take him now has been made.

Alex Teixeira is one step away from doing an Odemwingie...

Shaktar are tough to negotiate with...and when it comes to buying players we aren't exactly the best when it comes to negotiations. We'd be willing to give up on Messi if we were £2m under his club's valuation of him.

I think Shakhter probably feel they let Costa go to Bayern for to cheap and wont allow that to happen again.

As for Matip

Quote:
“Schalke have denied reports Cameroon international Joel Matip is on the verge of leaving the club for Liverpool this month.

Schalke chairman Clemens Tonnies has dismissed rumours Joel Matip is set to leave the Bundesliga outfit for Liverpool in the January transfer window.

The Cameroon international's contract at the Veltins Arena is set to expire in June and Liverpool are believed to be keeping a close eye on his situation.

Previous reports suggested Matip is due to join the Anfield side on a free transfer at the end of the season, but recent updates claimed he could already make the move to the Premier League this month.

Nevertheless, Tonnies has laughed off suggestions the centre-back is on the verge of leaving Schalke.

"Matip to Liverpool this month? That's a hoax," the Schalke supremo told Sport1.

The 24-year-old is a product of the Schalke youth academy and has developed into an important first-team member in Gelsenkirchen since making his official debut in November 2009.

Matip has made 18 Bundesliga appearances this campaign, scoring three goals in the process.”

It makes us look like cheapskates if hes not worth 31 we should kill the deal, but if klopp really thinks this guy can bang in 10 goals plus 10 assists each year for the next 3 or 4 years the remaining 7 million is LOL and is one of the reasons we get burnt by the likes of spurs etc.

Does it? Unless you just want the club to pay whatever price a selling club wants I don't see how trying to negotiate a deal is seen as being cheapskates.

The same reason we stood firm on the suarez and alonso price and truth if the guy aint worth around 40 million at 26 then I doubt hes class enough for and we should go for someone else, EPL team's have to pay more because everyone knows how big our TV deals are and can do the math.

When do spurs ever spend 38m on players.

Think going from £25m to £31m is a reasonable offer. Don't really wanna see the club paying way more then what they actually value the player at.

Your gonna be waiting a very long time before you start seeing £40m+ players coming to anfield.

Sorry but your basically saying that any player who is not worth £40m at 26 is not good enough for Liverpool. You might as well go and rule out at least 80% of players worldwide then.

Ridiculous thing to say!

Please buy my house, giving me the inflated asking price. Both me and my estate agent will be delighted to do business...

i am not seeing all these £40m+ players joining the big guns either. you were claiming that if the he isnt worth £40m then he must not be good enough.

fact is there are very few players in the world who are sold for £40m+. to just write all players off who are sold for less is stupid plain and and simple!

Er, you are not exactly being backed up in your financially negligent point of view. In ANY business - and the owners are running our club rightly as one - you never pay more than you have to for something. We have an obligation to negotiate sensibly and professionally or we'll be held to ransom for every player we go in for. Like houses, the only time to go in high is if there are competitors actively involved and you are 100% commited- not the case (yet) - that's the time to back our commitment with a winning bid, not mow when we're the only serious buyer. And, don't worry, I'm laughing heartily at your inarticulate nonsense, so sharing the mirth.

LOL, so we shouldn't learn from our own mistakes? Let's do a Boltn/Leeds/Portsmouth and carelessly throw money at all players. Just because there's TV money around the corner, doesn't mean we should practice financial lunacy.

Remember the talk is Chelsea pulled out because of the fee also and they have all the money to spend.

Liverpool had discussed pushing through a deal for Hernandez this month but believe Bayer Leverkusen wont sell. #lfc (Rory Smith - Times)

There are two things in play IMO.

We (and other English clubs) are going to find (selling) clubs being a lot more demanding in their negotiations going forward purely because of the incoming domestic broadcasting deal. The money is now at eye watering levels and a lot of clubs will be hoping to make the most of that in transfer fees.

On the other hand, should English clubs pander to these demands because they will have increased income? In short, no, they shouldn't.

Yes it will ideally give a bit more flexibility in negotiations but should English clubs now expect to be ripped off in the market with over inflated fees? No, they shouldn't.

They will, and always will because apart from london most of england is unfashionable and secondly clubs revenues are there for everyone to see.
