Ticket prices and matchday walkouts, Sturridge wanting to runaway ( ironic considering the usual state of his legs) and a nail in the coffin over the Teixeira deal.... it's been a contentious few days in the media for us and not exactly the ideal way to set-up for a home match we should, and in a way still need to, win.
Teixeira: I never though he was worth £35-40m and obviously neither did Klopp or the club; I'm not particularly irked we didn't get him and I don't view it as 'missing out' . There may have been one or two more low profile strikers available that would have offered more value, but maybe the manager doesn't want to spend money on short-term options. We'll need to wait and see what the summer brings.
Sturridge: Yes, the papers are probably hyping up the story into something more dramatic than it should be. But I can't help wondering where it all came from and why now? Liverpool were lucky to get Sturridge, I'm sure he would have had a choice of offers. Likewise, Sturridge was lucky to get Liverpool. We gave him regular PL starts, playing him in his preferred central role, gave him the opportunity to play alongside a genuine world class striker and then rewarded him with a big long-term contract that only a relatively few clubs could afford. And since then we've hardly seen him for two seasons, and our team slowly slips back down the league. He's a highly paid professional, he must understand that might bring some criticism ( even if it is not his fault ) . If he has a good attitude, he'll get back into the team and prove people wrong. Even if he does want to move, he still needs to get back and prove himself or how on earth does he expect to get a decent deal with another club?
Ticket prices & walkouts: This one's an essay on it's own, but I'll be brief. I'm really disappointed the club has dropped a bollock on this one straight away. At a time when they are bringing in the new stand ( and in some ways a new era for old Anfield) they should have been doing everything in their power to dress it up with as much positive PR as possible. Instead, for what amounts to a petty couple of million quid, and that in a time of bumper TV deals, they have upset the more loyal and committed fans, and given the media hawks an opportunity to keep turning out horror stories.
As for the walkout, I'm also disappointed that's how they've chosen to react at this time. It's still early February and a couple of weeks writing letters to the club and media and doing demos outside the ground would have been a preferred first step before going inside the ground and potentially taking action that could affect the team and possibly the match result.
It's going to be embarrassing, it's going to get messy and I don't know how it will end. I hope the club do amend their ticket costs, but I doubt they will give up their chase for more income and will look to get that cash back on the books with increases elsewhere.
