The reality is there are likely plenty players that the club enquire about which are a no go.

Lets look at the facts.

Over the years MUFC have spent over 25-30m on the following - Di Maria, Rooney, Herrera, RVP, Fellaini, Mata, Shaw, Rio plus bringing in Falcao on loan on wages near 300k per week which is more than LFC have ever paid anyone (including SG) and even today we are seeing 25m on Schneiderlin and signing the captain of the current world champions - that is the type of club they are. Some of that was last summer when there were not even in the CL after finishing 7th in the PL. No problem with that - wish we had those kind of resources - but most of our biggest spends have been on the back of big sales like Torres, Suarez and now Sterling. We have only rarely spent even 30m on a single player. 25 years ago when we were probably regarded as the best team in England we could go after the best players and expect to get them - not any more I am sad to say so we have to get the best we can and hope they gel together and develop to a level which sees us compete - just cos someone costs a lot does not make them a guaranteed success.

Its been mainly MCFC and MUFC who have spent mega sums in recent years - even CFC have reigned it in a bit as last summer yes they bought Costa and Fabregas but that was funded by the sales of Luiz and Lukaku - that has largely not been the case for City and United - they just spend!!

Carroll cost more the Suarez but Suarez ended up better and doesn't break down as much.

Every signing is a risk regardless of the price as there are so many variables at play.

It wasn't great really was it Yes there are risks but the risks decrease when you buy a tried and tested player. But in saying that we have bought some really good players over the years who have turned to crap when they arrived, Torres, Morientes etc May be even should I say Balotelli?

The one thing I will say in Benteke's favour he will work. If he puts in a good shift he might work with Coutinho up front.

If we still get Ings I will be happy, hard worker like Kuyt was.

Club is doing pretty well with getting Ings and Milner, they are the payers we need as well as very skilful because of their work effort.

We have spent a fair chunk over the last couple of years but we have scrimped a fair bit before that and are having to make up for it now.

I also don't understand celebrating a deal. I'd be celebrating if I were getting a cut or celebrating if we'd signed someone for that much but to celebrate doing the deal. Nah. Small time!

I imagine it'd be something in relation to game time. Maybe he couldn't get assurances? With Benteke probably coming eventually his chances would be quite limited. Although I'd have thought he'd get time in the cups, especially with us being in the Europa League.

Yes we may have spent quite a lot but it has mainly on players between 5-20m not the large sums on individual players which MUFC tend to spend. How much that is FSGs choice and how much it is the fact that the type of players who cost that much would not come to LFC is debatable but what is not debateable imo is that MUFC spend more on players than we do. It is cos they can - they are prob the only British club with a bigger world wide fan base than ours and a 75000 capacity stadium which is full every match compared to our 44000 is another big factor in this

We are not that good at picking up bargains, again that is not debateable - Sturridge and Coutinho being are only unqualified successes in recent times while the jury is still out on others such as Lallana, Allen, Sakho and Can - some of these are young and were bought for their as yet unfulfilled potential - and before LFC fans get on my back for that comment I would say that Can and Sakho have done pretty well so far and do look as if they will ultimately prove worth the money. There have been many others who haven't.

I look at clubs like NUFC a few years ago when in a particularly rich vein of success in the market they got Cabaye ....etc which took them to 5th in the PL and also Southampton in how they replaced those who left last summer which they followed up by doing so well last season or Swansea when they got Michu and Bomy who were off the radar and wish we had the transfer success of these teams.

Our transfer committee need to up their game - whether they have over this summer all I'll say is ask me again in about 6 months!! - but on the whole I am happy with what they have done so far but it can only judged further down the line..

It's still £316m spent in 5 years so that means £316m worth of players have signed for Liverpool.

You can buy two Mars bars for 50p each or 100 penny sweets, either way you have still spent £1 on confectionary.

You have to put yourself into the mindset of a "world class" player and ask why they'd want to come here.

Can we offer massive wages? No.

Champions League football? No.

Realistic chance of winning the Premier League? Nope.

Top manager to play under/learn from? Jury's still out on that one but it's not looking good.

Other world class players to play alongside? No.

A realistic transfer policy for us is to look for players who have the potential to become world class and hopefully develop them, because it's unlikely the top names in world football are going to want to come here.

Tbh Alan and I may end up eating humble pie at some point for this, I think one of the main problems for Liverpool is the succession of managers and poor transfers over the years.

I don't think Rogers is of the quality needed for a club of your stature in the same way Roy wasn't. Probably both nice blokes but not the kind of managers I can see being able to take that step up. A bit like us with Moyes.

Big clubs need proven winners imo.

I'm seeing £30m + Lambert for Benteke in the Twittersphere. I don't know quite what to make of it. I like Benteke, but he just hasn't looked the same since that lengthy Achilles injury he suffered last summer.

One thing I'm sure of is that Reus is a pipe dream. I'm getting tired of us being linked with him every window. If he was going to leave Dortmund I'm certain Bayern would be first in line.

We Have signed Ings. He was out of contract and has now signed a contract wih us. He's on the tour.

It's just a compensation payment that needs to be resolved but that doesn't affect the fact that Ings is a Liverpool player

Lots of rumours going around that Ibe will be going out on loan this coming season. Have to say I think it's the best thing for him. Needs game time doubt he will get it by staying with the players we have.

I'm not seeing how Ibe is better or going to be better than Sterling at the minute. I've not seen enough from him to back those claims up. He's not scored and has one assist to his name and he's only a year younger than Sterling. He's going to have to have some year to catch up! A loan to a peek club will be very good!
