Of course it's early days yet but he appears to have gone to the next level this season and added the missing ingredient to his game: consistency.
Remember when he first signed for us and his shooting was downright terrible? I mean, even his technique was bad, so he often struggled to lift the ball off the ground when shooting from range. You wouldn't believe it now. Yes, he still shoots a fair bit but more and more shots are rocketing towards the top corners.
Having said that, if he did leave, I don't feel it would be anywhere near as damaging as when Suarez left, for example. Mainly because we've got other strong attacking options now, and partly because we'd hopefully extract a massive fee for him and be able to attract a good player in his stead to soften the blow.”
Yes, he won't be the biggest loss we've suffered if we did sell him. We'll get a big fee for him, too.
If we sold him in January, for example, then we can just move Wijnaldum to the left for the remainder of the season (where | believe he spent most of his time at Newcastle) and have a midfield three of Hendo, Lallana and Can. Or, if we have to, move Lallana to the right and Mané (AFCON-aside) to the left. And that's assuming we don't even replace him in January, and if we get £60m or something then we most likely will do.
Hopefully we don't sell him, though. We'll survive if we do, he's not Suárez, but I want us to keep hold of our best players. Let them grow as part of the team. A Coutinho who's been here for a while and has adjusted (brilliantly) to Klopp's system is better than a Reus who will take time, and is unproven in the Premier League. Although at least with him he'd be used to Klopp's system, but, then, injuries. If it was Aubameyang, on the other hand, then cya Philippe.
We don't need to have a new player coming in and settling into the team when we already have the star player we need, who's finally making that push towards becoming world class. He's been on the edge of it for a couple seasons, and he just needed consistency to get there. If we finish the season with him having an average of 8/10 performances, 7/10 at worst, he'll have made it to that level.
