Spurs win 2-0. So we did make a point on Chelsea over the Xmas period. Their goal difference is also only two better than ours now. We may be in 4th by the time we next kick off a PL game but the Utd game is now bigger than ever.

I really want Spurs to win tonight!!!
To explain my thinking I believe that whilst the title is possible then that is what you should hope and aim for - none of this 'we are happy with top 4, that is our aim for this season' that I hear so much from our fans - yes top 4 would be good and would represent a satisfactory season after being 8th last season, but as things stand it is not our aim right now. We are second just 5 points behind in early January, our aim has to be the title. CFC getting more points tonight would have made coming top far harder so them losing has helped us a lot.

Obviously we are still far from favourites and of 6 top teams 2 of them are not going to qualify for the CL and that will be tough - I am fairly confident we will be OK but quite honestly we could finish anywhere from top to 6th - as could any of the teams. If pushed I would say TH and MU will miss out but it could easily be any of the others too.

When we play MU a win will be possible and we have to aim for that but i would take a draw - which may well end up with us lower than where we are now but I think a draw would be an acceptable result. Beating CFC 2 weeks later is more vital to our title hopes as there is still that gap and they are not likely to lose points to many other teams so if we want them to drop points (as we do) then we will have to do it ourselves.

A fascinating title race - any of 6 could win it

Of course Chelsea lose now, after we drop points.

A Spurs win was the preferred result for me. I'm still looking up the table, not down. We've gained a point on Chelsea. We're 5 points behind them with us still to play them at Anfield at the end of the month.

But we just need to focus on our own game. Keep winning and if we still don't win the title then it'll be because Chelsea were better, not because we threw it away. There's still a long way to go.

Tiago Ilori is off to Reading for £3.75m, according to the Echo.

We gained points when they were dropping them in the autumn so swings and roundabouts I say. I just hope that's the case on 31st January too...

He is a strange one - came with big hopes of being a top player but now nowhere near playing so has to be the best move for him and the club - and we get a bit of money too I felt when he did play he looked not the worst player ever and he has also played internationally for Portugal U21 when he kept Kane quiet - but obviously Klopp sees him a lot more than me and does not think he had a LFC future so good luck to the lad. The other one who has to go this window for me has to be Sakho as he is clearly never going to play again for us so whats the point keeping him. I think we could maybe get a decent fee (10-15m?) but at the same time there does not seem to have been much interest so far - be interesting to see how it pans out. Definitely do not want to see Lucas go as has been rumoured - not sure where he will get games (midfield or central defense?) but I think he would get some games and his presence is important too round the club - he may go in the summer tho I accept that.

Incomings? - not that bothered. |Maybe a winger with goals in him like Promis, I agree with Carra about the need for another GK but not sure we would get him in January so maybe cope with what we have for now. One day I think we need a better DM but that is probably not something to address this window.

Wait and see I think but if we got nobody it would not matter much as long as did not let anyone vital to the team depart

Jose Fonte has handed in a transfer request at Southampton, so naturally we're being linked with him.

He'd offer a veterans composure at the back for sure, but I'm not entirely sure Matip, Lovren and Klavan have done much wrong between them to suggest we desperately need strengthening in that position. I still think we need a classy DM in front of them to bring home more clean sheets.

33 is a bit long in the tooth so he'd better be cheap.

Willing to bet that Fonte is another one looking for a last massive payday in China - just me reading between the lines.

We shall see.

Matip left out by Cameroon for the Africa Cup Of Nations, so if he recovers from his Injury, we'll have him available.

Re Fonte my son (whose judgment on football I respect) always says he thinks Fonte has been the best S'ton defender for years but I think the 33 year old bit rules him out somewhat.

There are clearly issues for LFC defensively as our goals against column does not lie. The question we need to ask is why? Not good enough keeper? Central defenders dodgy? - both are factors perhaps but as much as anything I think it is a bit the way we are set up. There is no really effective DM in front of the back 4 as the mentality is always to think offensively even for those with a defensive brief like Hendo and the defence is often over exposed - Matip, Lovren and Klavan are all pretty good but without that protection they are always likely to concede. So do we change the formation and play an orthodox DM? - I am not sure we should really as I think to do so would lose us things from an attacking point of view, but that is the crux of it. Happily it is not up to me to solve this conundrum - I am sure Klopp knows what is going on and will try to address it.

Another factor of course in our conceding goals is the way we defend set plays which has much room for improvement

If we're signing anyone from Southampton, I'd rather it be Virgil van Dijk, but I'd be fine with Fonté, even at 33 if he's cheap enough. Would be a better option at the back than Lucas, and would provide the experience that we lost when Kolo left.

I don't know what he'd be worth, or what I think we should pay for him. £10m, I guess. Sounds high but if we get three-four years out of him then it'll be okay.
