Mignolet
Clyne, Gomez, Sakho, Moreno
Can
Henderson, Milner
Coutinho
Sturridge, Benteke

Firminho would need to dip out until he's up to speed but would be very useful option off the bench.
Or alternatively, you could put Firmino at the tip of the diamond, and have Coutinho further back ahead of Milner. We wouldn't see the best from Coutinho, granted, but we have seen him play well on occasions from a deeper position.

I just wonder where the likes of Lallana and Ibe fit in to a formation like that (not that I'm arguing it wouldn't be our best formation, because it probably would).

Feel bad for Luke Shaw. Was one of United's best players this season, could've been their player of the season (potentially), then suffers a nasty injury which would be hard to come back from. Don't care about United or how they'll cope now that they've lost their only real LB, but feel bad for the player. I hope for his sake that he can come back from it. It's sad when a promising young player's career goes to ruin through injuries. Hope it doesn't happen to him.

He's only 20 so he has time on his side but after so long out it'll be hard to come back, including mentally with a possible fear of further injury. Sturridge seemed like he was scared of getting injured again when he played last season, he didn't commit as much as he would have previously. Didn't do him much good, though, since he got injured anyway.

We've had our fair share of players whose careers were ruined through injuries. Who knows how Aurelio could've done for us if he weren't so injury prone? Or Owen, or Torres?

In fact, Samed Yeşil is a perfect example. When we first signed him and played him he looked promising, like we signed a gem. Then he picked up an injury and was out for a season and that was it for him.

They're just examples of injury-prone players, though. It's also bad when a bad challenge, or a strong free kick ruins a player's career.

Yup, horrible injury. Wish him a speedy and full recovery.

I can only wish all the very best of luck to Luke Shaw: an injury I wouldn't like to see any player suffer and he certainly doesn't deserve having to deal with it. I hope he proves as resilient as Djib Cisse and Henrik Larsson and makes a full recovery.

Echo Luke Shaw sentiments - hope he comes back well but it'll take time, resolve and as always good fortune to overcome an injury of that nature.

The more you think, the more there's been - Falcao is a current example. Fowler was never the same after his injury vs Everton followed by one at Leeds. Joe Cole, Vegard Heggem (I think), Rob Jones, Jim Beglin, Djibril Cisse, Flanagan, Haaland, Alan Smith (the Leeds/Utd version), Whiteside, Bridges, Kieron Dyer, Diaby, Hargreaves...

Van Nistelrooy deserves a mention - seemed to come back even stronger after two cruciate injuries.

What about Ronaldo? Did he win the 2002 world cup after one of his knee injuries?

To be honest, I don't think Cisse ever came back the same player. He showed A LOT of promise in his first half-season with us, and I was optimistic that he'd go on to be as potent as Fowler and Owen. But when he came back from that leg break, he just wasn't as good. He showed glimpses, but he sorta became another average striker for us.

It was an odd time for strikers around that period. Nobody outstanding, but between him, Milan Baros and Peter Crouch, we coped well.

I notice that Christian Benteke, James Milner, Nathaniel Clyne, Martin Skrtel, Dejan Lovren and Lucas Leiva are being rested for the Bordeaux game.

Should be an interesting team selection.

Even more interesting will be - who will be captain on the night and lead the team out? I would think Toure (if he's playing), an off the bench player now, but it's odd that no one is stand out.

Well he may not have been quite the same player ( though he did have to deal with two broken legs in fairly quick succession, if I remember ) but I was mainly referring to his ability to recover physically and mentally enough to get back playing top class football. I think Cisse is still playing, actually. That had to be Shaw's first priority: get back on his feet, then back in the team.

That probably means they're all playing at the weekend!

I wonder if we could see a back three against Bordeaux? Gomez, Toure & Sakho with Ibe and Moreno as wing-backs.

Brendan might go all nuts and give it to Rossiter if he plays. If Sakho plays then he should get it. He's got captain experience.

If Ibe plays then I think he'd be one of our most senior players outside Mignolet.

guess that means skrtel and lovren will be playing on weekend.

these two are bullet proof!!

from the presser regarding sakho

Rodgers continued: "Mama is a player we want to keep. it was a difficult start for him, like all the players. We won the first few games so it was difficult for him to get in the team.

"After the international break he was always going to be needed. He will start and we want to extend his contract."

Cisse scored an absolutely brilliant volley for us in the 2006 Cup Final after his injuries. Unfortunately it was almost forgotten as Gerrard scored a screamer to take it to extra time against West Ham.

Mignolet; Gomez, Toure, Sakho; Ibe, Rossiter, Emre Can, Moreno; Lallana, Coutinho; Origi.

Subs: Bogdan, Randall, Clearly, Chirivella, Brannagan, Ings, Firmino.

6pm tonight. BT Sport.

3 at the back then, maybe BR is listening to us all.

I'm not so sure. If he was going to go three are the back, it would have made sense to play two up front ( i.e. Ings & Origi ) . I think that may be another 4-3-3 line up, but I hope I'm wrong.

Injuries won't usually affect technique, moreso mobility, pace and the way the player approaches the physical aspect of the game.

Sakho is captaining today too btw. Some may say that maybe he's been given the armband to sweeten him up a bit, but it's probably the right decision given the team that's out there.

Could easily have been given to Toure or Can though.

Another forgettable 45 minutes then. Rossiter's made a big impression though, and Moreno's performance seems like a good argument to start him again on Sunday. Other than that, nothing to really talk about.

amateurish management again from BR. Toure gets injured and he brings on a teenage midfielder and moves Can to CB. Then we end up playing two vastly inexperienced youngsters as our midfield partnership and a player out of position...again.

Surely bring on Cleary, like for like. Keep some experience in centre mid. pathetic.
