New tablet for my old Ma.

She's looking for a tablet to replace her Blackberry phone. The idea being it is a bigger display and she will have all the benefits of a smart phone.

She has £60 of vouchers at Tesco, so her first preference would probably be the Hudl. I've suggested a similarly priced Kindle Fire HDX as an alternative. I'm sure you guys could offer up something else for a similar price. An android software would be preferential.

Ideally, she would want to be able to have a sim-only tariff, and as we (the family) have 3 phones on VM, that would be the tariff she'd prefer. As of now, we can get an all-you-can eat data/phone/texts tariff for £10/month on a rolling 30-day contract.

If I have a tablet and smart phone, do they work off the same SIM (and a duplicate), or will I need a separate SIM for both? Assuming they will both be with VM?

The Hudl doesn't have a 3G/4G model, do that's off your list.

Why doesn't she get broadband at home? From about £3/month it's cheaper than any mobile tariff.

Windows tablets have an advantage that even the cheapest one can be managed remotely. So even if you are not there and something goes wrong you can still help in most cases, via Team Viewer and such.

Samsung android tablets and phones can also be fully managed remotely using Teamviewer quick support. It is a bit slow though (1-2 seconds response).

Windows 8 tablets respond immediately. The new Linx 8 has 3g capability.

However as you have broadband you dont really need 3g in tablet. A simple cordless phone (say £20) would be very low cost to run - most broad band packages give unlimited landline calls day and night for a few pounds per month.

Then buy a Samsung (say) phone for use outside house.

Tablets that accept a sim are considerably more expensive than their WiFi only versions.

The Fire HDX 7" 16GB is currently £119, the sim-enabled version is £219

(Although the Fire HDX 7" wifi has just come down in price, maybe the 4g version will come down in price soon as well)
-----------
Maybe a new phone with a bigger screen than her Blackberry would be a better choice?

Have you got a particular phone in mind, oilman?

not really but you might check the teamviewer website for phones fully compatible with teamviewer quick support.

Thanks for your help, oilman. She's decided to use her Blackberry just as a phone, which brings her sim-only monthly payment down by £3.

She's also bought the Hudl 2, which she got for £38! So very happy with that.

Why not install skype on the hudl and same on your device? Then your ma could make unlimited free videocalls to you hands-free when at home in broadband range.

If you have children, she'll love seeing the grandchildren.
