I've been watching Eastenders for years on and off, ever since it started, and totally understand how in its early years it gained a reputation for being depressing, having characters choke on their own vomit, showing Nick Cotton's heroin addiction, etc.

But lately, despite people saying on here they still find the show depressing, I find myself completely disagreeing, thinking the show is now more completely bonkers than bleak.

Take millionaire Alfie Moon's recent brain tumour diagnosis, just when he and Kat seem on the verge of happiness ever after. I found myself laughing at the ludicrousness of the situation rather than weeping in agony for the characters predicament.

The same with the prickly Shabnab and her abandoned baby revelation. Who cares? This girl is such a self righteous, judgemental imitation of her annoying mother, she deserves all the misery life can throw at her.

I read years ago someone saying Eastenders is a black comedy and I think they are right. Are we really expected to take the show seriously these days?

I find myself often thinking in amazement that a massive team of mainly Oxford educated toffs sit down and plan this stuff out for the nation to watch, thinking this is groundbreaking intelligent stimulating drama.

Is it just me? Has years of watching misery heaped upon misery completely desensitised me to being able to care anymore?

What do you think?

It's a little bit of both. And that's why we love it.

I find much of it farcical these days, but I still watch it because at times it is good and hits a nerve.

It's daft as a brush sometimes but I still find myself involved with it after all this time; the forum keeps me hooked too!

Every time I see a trailer for EE, it is full of women crying or screaming abuse, men threatening each other, people sitting on their stairs blubbing and most of it seems to be filmed without resorting to studio lights. Sadly, Coronation Street seems to be copying it.

East Enders is the programme I love to hate. I sit there criticising the acting, the plot lines and the characters but I have to watch it.

I agree Dan. I have watched from day one and I have never bought into this EastEnders is all doom and gloom and depressing mularkey. It is too easy to give EastEnders this tag and is usually from occasional viewers or none viewers who are most probably Daily Mail Readers, who would not know where the BBC One button on their remote was if their life depended on it!

I enjoy the show still and although I am not DTC's biggest fan, the show is in a good place.

Daily mail readers piss me off. If they don't like the show why comment on it. Saying things like I haven't watched this rubbish in years,i despise people who watch this low life show.

The acting is the best of all the soaps going, all the other soaps have decent actors just not as many as eastenders does, good try though, if you can act better then please give it a go

A lot of the EastEnders cast are great actors/actresses, the rest are okay. I love EastEnders about as much as I love Neighbours. A great soap.

quality drama doesn't have to mean dark/deep/depressing all the time. soaps, including EE, used to be better at light and shade, now it's just shade oops sorry i mean a blackout!

You don't like it, you don't watch it. As simple as that. Instead, you keep on watching and then moan and complain about it in endless threads. It doesn't make any sense right?

The show IS depressing, but it is famous for it. As for ridiculous, yes, probably so, more now than ever. At the moment it is crammed full of characters you really can't have sympathy for.
You have Proxside Roxy and quivering Sharon who borrow the same hair, you have sour faced cow Shagnam who is all I'm so religous but parted her legs for psycho Dean, you have OAP Phil still acting like he 20, Mad Max the 'sex stud' where for some unknown reason women are a magnet to, you have miserable Carol who either sighs for England or barks at her family, talking of which, there's fatbuster loser Sonia who is shagging that awful Tina cow. Oh, not forgetting looney Ronnie and zelda the terrahawk Shirley.

Hey....who knows, next year might be better.

I'm with you on that! I'm not saying I always disliked it though, it was my favourite of the soaps up until a couple of years ago.

Oh yeah, and when they go to bed at night, they all shout out good night to each other.
