Are father and daughter going to continue living across the road from each other and not acknowledge one another? Watching Ben ignore her in a scene the other day was very awkward. So he doesn't want to be a dad to her - are we just going to leave it there?

Ben, Jay, Lola and Lexi need to be paid more attention to. There is a lot of scope there for drama and great stories. Harry Reid is a more than capable actor - as is Jamie Borthwick and Danielle Harold.

I find it interesting that absent/struggling mothers are villainised more than absent/struggling fathers.

There is scope for a good story there. After the whole palava of Phil trying to gain custody of Lexi, he and Sharon have shown any interest in the child since. And Ben has barely acknowledged her existence.

It's very interesting isn't it? You only have to read through some of the comments on the other threads to see how Cindy is being vilified for becoming a mother. There wasn't this much hate for TJ when he upped sticks and left.

He should never have been made her father in the first place!!
Who was producer at the time? Or is that a stupid question? (Birkwood??)

On the contrary, I think that was one of BK's better ideas. Ben Mitchell's daughter is an important character for the future.

Agreed. I just wish they wouldn't ignore it.

You'd think Phil would be pushing Ben to be more involved in Lexi's life. But then, he seems to have forgotten she exists too.

When he came back Ben told Lola he wasn't there to interfere with Lexi. I presume it will be revisited when Kathy returns and wants to know her granddaughter. I think Lola / Kathy could have a fairly good relationship.

It's a great future plot line for Kathy. Presumably she and Phil bond over their granddaughter. I liked the brief twisted surrogate mum thing Lola had with Sharon and Ronnie, shame they didn't do more with that (not the godawful social worker plot, the other stuff).

Also funny how Phil ain't fussed anymore after putting the poor girl under all that stress.

Like JB said, he pretty much said he wasn't gonna be involved as Lola was worried he was gonna take her, but he not shown any interest, he was 16 when she was born, didn't know he was the dad for ages and not taken any step to bond.

perhaps he generally not ready, is it a excuse maybe but how many lads really want to play Dad at 16 when they never had much say in the first place, maybe if Lola step up as well and tried to get him involved he might do it, she not pushed it so I don't think it's entirely he fault in this case, hopefully in the future if Lola doesn't leave and when Kathy returns it will get revisited.

It seems that Phil has too which is crazy seeing as he once had custody of her

Ben said he wasn't interested in being a father and I think that DTC is trying to ignore the fact that Lexi is her own third cousin twice removed. The daughter of two third cousins once removed. Plus Billy sounds older than his second cousin Phil in saying that Billy's great-granddaughter is Phil's granddaughter. Though I am not certain about DTC wanting to forget that.

Hell, we have Denny being the son of two adoptive half-siblings and he is never mentioned and Kat's daughter and son whom she doesn't know about are her first cousins.

Clearly they haven't forgotten,so you don't have to remind them. It's not unrealistic that Ben wouldn't want anything to do with her. He's a young lad, he wasn't even close with Lola. He had an experiment that ended with Lexi. He didn't even know he had a daughter for months. He isn't interested in being her dad. Now whether that's right or not is a different story, but it's hardly some ridiculous overlook by TPTB.

I find it more ridiculous that Phil hasn't seen much of her onscreen. She's his first grandchild and he's shown before he wanted her in his life. I suppose the fact that Lola has been so absent has put the halt on that.

I just wish they'd apply the principle to all of the other kids on the show.

They are trying to turn Ben heterosexual

The producers messed up on this. It never should have been allowed

Might've been an intentional 'ignore' though. Could be leading to a story later in the year.

It's pretty clear that they aren't. Do heterosexuals snog boys in parks? No.

They are putting him back in the closet because he wants to make his dad proud and be a "real" man.

It's unfortunate that Ben has so much of a backstory that I don't think help the intended current development of a character.

DTC clearly wants Ben to play the role of gay lad who struggles to accept his sexuality. But it's hindered by the fact he already came out once before. And the fact he has a kid.

I think the whole sidelining of Lexi is as much to do with pushing the reset button on Ben as a character as anything else. It's messy and annoying that whole swathes of his past have been eliminated or sidelined but perhaps it was the only way for them to take the character in the direction they want him to go in rather than being bogged down by previously appalling ideas.

Women/Girls are more harshly judged than their male counterparts, on here.
