works brilliantly when you have a signal but it you don't or have a flakey one it doesn't, you get a message saying "cannot connect to Internet" you'd think it would at least try & dial the number.

Reason I ask is that the signal is very patchy in places, I get 1, 2 or no bars, so you'd think the iPhone would try & ring the number.

As you're on Vodafone who are notorious for having no internet on 2G, you might want to disable SIRI. This will then let you use the old style voice dialler which doesn't need an internet connection. (Its not as good as Siri however).
