Hi all,

Yesterday I finally cancelled my Sky+ HD package (hazaa!) and am looking forward to being contract-free. We don't watch a huge amount of TV (cbeebies dominates, sadly) but enjoy HD terrestrial sport, and a few evening shows.

I'm eyeing up the Humax 1000s/1010s boxes, and think Freesat will be good seeing as we have an existing dish. Are the only differences between the boxes the colour, and the fact that the 1010s has wifi? Our box will be next to our broadband hub so wifi isn't important for that, but are there any other benefits to having wifi with the Humax box?

The humax boxes are a couple of years old. Is there any news on whether new boxes are due out imminently? If so then I can hold out a couple of months. If not I'll take the plunge.

Finally, I'm thinking about getting an all-in-one remote that will work across my TV, Soundbase, Humax box (probably) and my Raspberry Pi running Kodi. Does anyone recommend a particular remote?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Other than colour and built in WiFi on the white 1010S there is no difference, and if you are using a cable connection no advantages.

There is a new box in the pipeline, you will find that for this reason retailers have low stocks of the existing boxes. Details are sparse, no idea as to date they will become available. Barry at MyHumax has told us the new box won't have a scart socket so may be smaller than the existing boxes.

Hi Pubey,
What Graham said! He is the guru. As far as remotes go, I have one each of the two boxes and I use Logitech Harmony universal remotes to control multi input systems. Just as an aside I have swopped the original boxes hard drives for larger drives. It's dead easy, one out one in.

I use a Harmony 555 which sadly is not available anymore. Not sure which of the current Logitech Harmony range I would go for if buying now as I currently have 12 devices and 12 activities set up on the 555. I also still keep my Foxsat HDR remote control to hand as it is useful for tweaking control of the TV and AV amp without needing to use Device Mode on the 555 and also has the small remote control for my HDMI switch taped to the back of it for when that occasionally gets confused which input it is supposed to be using.

New box? I'd be cautious and wait until any gremlins have been ironed out. The current boxes seem more or less sorted.

Universal remote? Another vote here for the Harmony range. I use a Harmony Smart Control. It's one of the ones with a hub that connects to your wifi. The controller (or your smart phone) communicates wirelessly with the hub whch then sends the control signals (infra-red, bluetooth or wireless). They work brilliantly. I believe the more basic infra-red models like the 650 are pretty good too.

haha, if only that was the reason why retailers have limited/zero stock!

What other reason would there be ?.

I guess if you had the gumption to look for the new box, some retailers will already be advertising it.

They've alienated most independent retailers by undercutting them selling direct to customers, a big no no in this and many other industries. It was even enough to put Amazon off selling, though that isn't necessary a bad thing for independents!

I already know of the new box, which is targeting a mid to end of July launch.

Oh dear ... looks like I spoke too soon. My box has been screwed up by the latest software.

I believe the new unit has the very same software.

are there any differences at all? Just looks like a new box, but otherwise identical (with built in wifi)
