Ironic though how the linked story also highlights the point I made previously on post #19

Is pretty much word for word with what I previously said

The report doesnt seem to mention what share the UK has of Nissan's entire component sourcing - ie how much of the car is sourced from the UK compared to still being imported from elsewhere, although I suspect the use of the word ';significant' suggests that it may still be considerable.”

When they ban zero hours, don't you just think employers will work around it with 1 hour, 5 hour or some other part time or non guaranteed work. Many students and older people actually like them, exlusive zero hours are banned now and surely a more full labour market will lead to employers having to compete more to get staff and to compete more for good people. 70% of all the jobs people have got in the last 2 years have been full time employment.

I'm fed up of hearing the same moaners spouting broken Britain, same old zero hours nonsense and this and that. The evidence of progress is in this thread, the grass is not greener anywhere else in Europe right now, we've got twice the GDP growth of Germany, the fastest growing economy in Europe, a car industry back to pre2008 productivity and seeing big investment and growth.

As much as I would prefer this thread to get back on topic; I would just like to add my opinion on this.

A friend of mine works for a well known sports retailer on a zero hours contract. They call her into work at the drop of a hat, with very little notice. However, if she wishes to take any holiday time (not that she gets paid any holiday pay) she must provide them with something like 4 weeks' notice, and have it authorised before she can commit to anything.

To me, this is completely unacceptable. If I was in her position I would politely tell them to shove their job, and tell them that if they want me to be flexible for them, then I expect the same in return. (Not that they would be bothered; they would simply find some other poor sod to exploit.)

It is like that for some people, I wouldn't deny it. That doesn't mean it's the same for everyone or that you could ban it, if you did businesses would likely find a workaround and then that also means the people who do want that flexibility cannot do casual work.

We've drifted away from the original "broken Britain" comment, and even further from the original topic!

I still don't get the attraction. Mobile service in the UK is already fairly cheap, so why would I sign up to a service with a number of limitations and the potential to disappear overnight, just to save a couple of quid?

as long as foodbanks exist then there is a place for any kind of free service no matter what... Unfortunately some people rely on opportunities to save a couple of quid.

Hi, guys. Let's try and keep the thread on-topic from now on as the discussion veered off completely. We don't really want to have to remove posts due to clutter. Thanks.

We're talking about a service that can cost pennies to use, once you have the phone - e.g. 3's 321 tariff or the cheap plans offered by the supermarkets. For that you get reliable service from a company that is not likely to go bust overnight.

If the key thing is to push advertising, you will need customers with money, surely

Sure. But if they are only aiming for the very bottom end of the market (people who can't even afford a 7.50 goodybag a month) then the users aren't going to be terribly appealing to advertisers. ...

Has this service launched already?
Has anyone received a SIM?

The engadget website says 'Free mobile plans are coming to the UK in July',

Looks like it's gone live today:

Quote:
“The UK's newest MVNO has launched today, and as promised, offers a completely free SIM-only tariff with 200 minutes, 200 texts and 200MB of 4G data per month (courtesy of Three's network) -- well, it's free after you pay the £7 for SIM delivery and activation, anyway.”

Go back a page and decline the month free 1st month trial of Premium Voice. Then its £6.99 up front, £0.00 per month.

Still don't see the attraction myself. Maybe if I was such a cheapskate that even giffgaff was too much, but I'd rather pay £15 a month and get dependable service from a company that is unlikely to go bust any time soon

It would appear so, yes:

FreedomPop blog update

So much for signing up early... Anyway:

I'm in two minds about it myself.

On the one hand; it runs on Three so there (for me) won't be any issue with coverage, and it seems decent for call and text allowances on the face of it.

On the other hand; early signup seems to have been nothing but a time filler (I haven't heard a thing since signing up in May, it's now September and boom - they're live), £2 delivery and £5 activation (yes I can see the reasoning behind it, but after the 4 months of nothing after signing up early it's a bit offputting), various questions seem very much open (e.g. does it need a 3G handset to work, with it's network partner being Three), and so on.

Overall, I'll probably end up giving it a go at some point - can't say I'd consider using it as a main provider just yet though. Personally, I'd need a bit more information before going down that road.

Is it just 3? I thought they were planning to get a second network as well?

According to this link:

At the moment though - yes, it's just Three.
