1) Jimmi Harkishan - Dev Alahan (Corrie)
Must take the number 1 spot for me because I am bamboozled as to how he has managed to remain on one of the country's top shows despite possessing the acting talent of an ant! Without doubt, one of the absolute worst actors both in CS history and in soapland itself.
2) Maddy Hill - Nancy Carter (EE)
The 30th anniversary has just taken me back to EE after a 10-year hiatus so I am only just getting used to the Carters. Hill's dreadful line delivery immediately stood out. I was aware that her character is epileptic and wondered if the way she spoke was supposed to convey something about her condition. That never really rang true with me so I concluded that this is just Hill's acting style. Awful, just awful. How the hell did she win Best Newcomer at the NTA's?
3) Antony Cotton - Sean Tully (Corrie)
Despite being dreadful, you've got to hand it to Cotton. He has hoodwinked everyone into buying his "look, I'm playing me" act and gained a lot of power within ITV along the way. An actor he certainly isn't, but self-promoting, savvy businessman, well... Most Popular Newcomer NTA (1985) , Best Actor BSA (2007) and still on the show after 12 years is not bad going, not to mention that he appears to garner "special treatment" that none of his colleagues receive as regards external projects to the Street
3) Nedjet Salih - Ali Osman (EE)
I'm surprised no-one has mentioned this EE original. He was so bad, he even managed to make Peter Dean (Pete Beale) look believable. What was worse is that his on-screen partner Sandy Ratcliff (Sue) was great in her role which just served to show him up even more. Having said all of that, casting Ali was, apparently, a major big deal in itself as only three Turkish speaking actors could be located in London at the time. One was considered unsuitable while the other two were Salih and the guy who went on to play Ali's brother Mehmet (Haluk Bilginer). Writer Tony Holland wanted Bilginer for Ali while Julia Smith preferred Salih. Though Smith won out in the end, it was not one of her more memorable casting moments. Another little factoid - Salih changed his name to Nej Adamson after leaving EE...probably in an attempt to escape his dreadful work here!!
4) Saeed Jaffrey - Ravi Desai (Corrie)
Jaffrey proved that even BAFTA-nominated actors have off periods. As Ravi Desai, he was absolutely laughable. All eye-rolling and hand gestures, this is a role he would definitely expel from his CV if possible. Ironically, it was this character's departure which paved the way for the introduction of my number 1 choice above for Worst Actor, Jimmi Harkishan as Ravi sold his business to Dev.
Honourable Mentions:
Laila Morse - Big Mo Slater (EE)
Shirley Cheriton - Debbie Wilkins (EE)
Jonathan Dixon - Darryl Morton (Corrie)
