singers artificial voices
I'm not talking about vocoders or auto tune tricks in the studio or whatever it is they do these days but is it just me or do more and more singers seem to be copying a style of singing that they think is popular? I hear songs on the radio in my car and think not another one stretching their vocals out in this pretend soulful karaoke.
Singers used to actually use their own voices and they were all unique and you instantly knew it was them when you heard their new record for the first time. |

It's probably because it's just one session singer providing the vocals for all of these fly-by-night, single-name singers who are merely fronts for the latest computer-generated tunes.

Ellie Goulding was the first person that I thought of when I saw this thread.
I'm a fan, I have both of her albums and I like her music but it took me a while to like her. Her singing voice is clearly not a natural one. It seems put on. I would like to hear her natural singing voice at some point. |

Forgot Britney Spears the record execs made her adopt a more nasal voice to seem more sexy bare in mind she was 16.
Lana Del Rey deepens her voice as it's naturally quite high. |

It stands out a mile when they put these voices on. You don't have to be a fantastic singer, I just want to hear your real unique voice. I mean Marc Almond sometimes sounded out of tune but you knew it was him!

The funny thing is that she sounded in great voice on some songs but like a fog horn on others. Still one of my favourite singers though.

I don't mean experimenting and doing funny things with your voice like Lene Lovich in the name of art rather imitating what they think the public wants.

Haha! I totally agree- it has become somewhat of a 'party piece' for me to do a turn of Ronans 'side of the mouth' growly/snarly singing thing he does. It started around the time of his first solo album, namely 'Lovin' each day' . That's always a goodie for karaoke....!!

To me, if a singer actually sounds better live compared to their recordings, then that right there is what should tell you everything about them. To me, my most favorite singer James Otto is one of them singers who is just that: even better live.

I can't stand English singers who feel that they have to sing in an American accent. Elton John was the first I remember being annoyed by but I'm sure there are plenty still doing it.

How does falsetto singing fit with this thread? I'm not sure the Bee Gees would have had a career if they didn't sing falsetto.
If you want 'authentic' singing it might be better to listen to folk music or buskers. |

I agree with this.
There does seem to be this thinking nowadays that 'personality' comes from a person sounding different and that a clean, natural voice is somehow 'boring' hence the need for singer to adopt strange affectations when singing. As such there seems to be a loss in the art of singing where it's timing and inflections and expressions in the singing that bring the character and tell the story. Moreso than putting any funny voice can. |

I wouldn't really call any singer's voice artificial. It's just a style they use, and to them it is probably completely natural. I remember everyone thinking Diana Vickers had a crazy voice and were convinced the way she was singing was going to tear her throat to shreds or something bizarre like that, but that's just the way she sings. The same goes for Ellie Goulding et al.
Singers who are nasal... Well, that's an entirely different issue, in my opinion. That's just bad technique. |

There is a voice that some singers put on that I can't abide.
I can't really describe it though and I don't know the names of the singers as when they start I switch over. Paloma Faith might be an example in some of her songs, but not all. It's like an American indie/folk singer started it off with their natural voice and then another singer picked up on it and then there was a domino effect and now loads of singers, primarily female, put on that voice. Regularly hear it on Later with Jools. |
