Who do you consider to be the King of soul?
Who would you say is the best male soul artist ever? Here are my top four, feel free to add suggestions
4. Lionel Richie/The Commodores; Lionel is an excellent singer, although I slightly prefer his earlier Commodores material. Favourite track by either is Easy and favourite Lionel solo song is All Night Long. Hello is overrated 3. George Benson; A very underrated artist, Give me the Night is one of the best soul tracks ever. Although there are many other awesome songs 2. Marvin Gaye; A talent taken from us too young. His best song was definitely What's Going on but many other great tracks were recorded on the Motown label, including some great duets with Diana Ross and Tammi Terrell 1. Stevie Wonder; Motown's original prodigy. Such a musical genuis, writing songs from a young age. Most of Stevie's songs are very uplifting including my personal favourite For Once In My Life, but a ballad such as Lately is equally effective |

I'm never one for creating music royalty in the sense of having one person who's supposed to be better than everyone else. I'd sooner have an 'A' list and all these guys would be one it and probably many more that haven't immediately sprung to mind.
Curtis Mayfield, Otis Redding, James Brown, Donny Hathaway, Sly Stone and Isaac Hayes would be near the top. (As would Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder). Also up there would be: Al Green Jerry Butler Johnny Taylor Eddie Kendricks Smokey Robinson Lou Rawls Sam Cooke Teddy Pendergrass Bobby Wilson (one the strength of his only album) Bobby Womack O.V. Wright James Carr Darrell Banks Jerry Williams (aka Swamp Dogg) Luther Vandross David Ruffin Aaron Neville Gene McDaniels Life would be much worse without artists like this. |

'the king of' suggests popularity , so marvin gaye ?
the godafther of soul usually referes to james brown, although ray charles has a claim to that too as he broke alot of ground for black artists. |

3 people are usually referred to as the king of soul, and that's sam cooke, otis redding and james brown, although james brown is more commonly known as the godfather of soul, and that's the nickname i'd refer to him as, so that helps narrow down the other two
google would have easily answered this |

Impossible question as its completely subjective.
IMO, the best 4 soul songs ever made are by Sam Cooke, Otis Redding, Ray Charles and Bobby Womack so that puts them up there for me. As lifelong soul obsessive, I've never got the James Brown love. He just doesn't do it for me |
