I had to turn Data Roaming on to get the data to work.”
Have Customer Services enabled the ability for you to call 0845 and 0870 numbers? According to
http://anywheresim.com/the-small-print/ , it's not enabled by default but I'm not sure whether that also means it is not possible full stop. Of course, the inability for the SIM to work outside the EU full stop is a bigger issue, although this could be overcome - with caveats - by using it in conjunction with a KnowRoaming sticker (Truphone, the aforementioned Toggle SIM, and other solutions that offer local numbers with caveats obviously involve a physically separate SIM card).

I had an interesting phone discussion a couple of months ago with Marshall Frieze, Director of New Business Sales at Leeds-based 24 Seven, who informed me that they will be launching their JUMP service - which operates on a similar principle to Anywhere SIM, including no agreement with Three as of yet, but with some level of 4G support across the other networks - to the consumer market before the end of 2015.
Aside from that, we discussed VoWiFi, VoLTE, handoff, carrier aggregation, FreedomPop, Project Fi, Apple SIM, Gigasky, international roaming with local numbers with SMS and call forwarding, HulloMail and other voicemail solutions, network-based and handset-based call recording, *0# up-to-160-char network-based and handset-based (not possible on Android phones with O2 SIMs) SMS delivery reports, and more.
