I would be extremely grateful if anyone out there could fill me in on this as I'm not having much luck. I'm aware that Sunset Beach is available on www.ebay.co.uk but it's only epis 1 - 120 (who know's if it's a good quality version, as a professional company isn't selling the epis, it's a fan. Or if it's advert-free etc.) Plus, these epis have already aired on Five since the show returned in Sep '04 & currently we're on epi No 126. Unless Five decide to continue with Season 2/3, I want to know if the storylines beyond Terror Island (Season 2+) will be released on DVD. Thank you for your help!

I doubt Sunset Beach will ever be released on DVD. It's a daytime soap and no daytime soaps are ever released on DVD. There are just way too many episodes. 751 episodes would take up a hell of a lot of DVD's! You'd end up having to pay 1000's of pounds!!

There's that site where you can vote for the show you want on DVD. I can't remember the address though.

It worked for Charmed. All th results get sent to the Networks and other places, so they know how many people want a certain show on DVD.

Dark Shadows got a release because it was a classic...Sunset Beach is considered a failure in the US so I doubt it will be released.

It was a failure in the US but a success here and in other countries. There are plenty of UK shows that i have read about that have been released on DVD in the US but not here so why not the other way around?

Dallas is a Prime-Time soap, not daytime and only has 357 episodes, thats a big difference.

Paramount own the rights to Sunset Beach so if they know that enough people want it on DVD then you never know.
They also own the rights to 90210, Melrose Place and Charmed and we all know how they are doing in being released onto DVD.

Yes but I will state again, 90210, Melrose Place and Charmed are all Prime-Time shows with nowhere near as many episodes as Sunset Beach. Although I would love a Sunset Beach DVD release I doubt it ever will be, or if it is not for many many many years to come. All the old Prime-Time shows will take priority. The Daytime soaps may get a "best of" release one day, maybe when there is nothing else to bring out, but never a full release!

Sunset Beach was a success everywhere mainly i thought. Cause if it had of been a failed in US there would of been no way of getting 3 years out of it. If it was a failed soap it would of been axed long before 3 yrs for example at the end of the 1st yr 97. I thought NBC had 2 just end 2 soaps mayb 3 and one of them was Sunset Beach. Sunset Beach had great story lines eg: Dell's murder, Terror Island, Shock Wave, Franchesca's Murders, R Jewls, Maria comming back. I wouldnt say SB was a failed soap but i do agree that it wasnt given a fair chance and what we do have of it [751 episdes] should be out on dvd so everyone could enjoy it but as i and many other people will know it's very unlikley.

Sunset Beach was a failure in the US. All the storylines like Terror Island, Shockwave ect were used to boost ratings. The ratings went up during these moments, then down again after the storylines. The show couldn't sustain an audience in the US. The show would have been cancelled a lot sooner, but Aaron Spelling pleaded with NBC to continue the contract and keep the show on the air. They only agreed to do so when Mr Spelling agreed to work for free!!! The man worked for absolutely nothing just to keep his show on the air for longer, but it still got canned eventually! Sunset Beach just didnt catch on. US soap viewers prefere their traditional soaps like B&B, Y&R ect. Yes Days is camp and crazy and still on the air but that used to be a traditional soap and it's fans have remained loyal and still stick by it through all the OTTness. Sunset Beach started out OTT and that was the mistake. If it had been another traditional soap then it may have had a chance, if it had taken it's time to mature into a camp classic rather than just shoving it in the face of the audience since the inception! I love Sunset Beach and I believe that having it last just 3 years gives it more appeal. The show was a classic and couldnt have gone on forever! Having the short run gives it more of a cult status and a show to remember forever!

So, the bottom line is that it doesn't look optimistic that Sunset Beach will ever be released on DVD? Or least anytime soon, mainly cos of 751 epis & that the show was a failure in US? But how about the common fact it was a MAJOR HIT in the UK? I've never seen a show like Sunset Beach in my life & I doubt I ever will. SB is a million times better than DOOL/Y&R/B&B. No offense to any of the fans to these soaps. I love DOOL/B&B myself & I know I'd enjoy Y&R but the fact remains that SB is much better than these shows & preferred by the UK viewers. The record speaks for itself, SB is on our screens, the other US Soaps aren't. 'Deschanel' says that Paramount own the rights to SB & depending on how popular the show could be on DVD, but how long would we have to wait for the show to be released on DVD? Paramount is a comedy channel, so could you please tell me how this channel/company own the right to SB? If the show is unlikely to come out on DVD & Five are reluctant to air Season 2+, what's our alternative solution? Have any of you guys contacted other channels, e.g. ITV2/UKTV Gold etc? WE CAN'T GIVE UP! If we were able to convince Five to show the remaining epis of Season 1 in an early morning time-slot, surely we can win them round in persuading them to buy the rights to & airing Season 2/3.

Paramount may specialise in comedy, but they are also a regular production company. Paramount hold the rights to nearly all of the Aaron Spelling shows as of this year. Beverly Hills 90210, Melrose Place, Sunset Bach, Charmed ect. The Prime-time shows will get a priority release...Charmed is already out, 90210 and Melrose on their way later this year. Sunset Beach may MAY get a "best of" release or a "special storyline" release at some point it the very distant future, but it will not be a priority. I even think that Aaron Spelling would like to forget Sunset Beach. He considers it a failure to and as such he has the show priced very high as a way to discourage Networks from buying the show. So god knows how much it cost FIVE to buy the rights to this first year. I seriously doubt they will even consider buying the rest of the series as they will be expecting huge ratings in order to be able to pay for it! And I mean ratings around the mark of at least 800,000 viewers per episode. You have to understand that this show is just too damn expensive! It's probably priced double of what it was the first time round!

Thanks for clarifying that Savoloy Lips but how on earth can Five expect to get huge viewing figures for SB @ 3:45am, Sat/Sun? I was under the impression that Five don't keep tabs on ratings this time of the morning. They claim to screen the remaining epis of Season 1 for all the 'loyal fans,' so isn't it worth a try to convince them to buy the rights & airing Season 2+ for ALL the 'loyal fans?' No matter how much it costs, SB is worth it! Have any of you guys contacted other channels, e.g. ITV2 or UKTV Gold? UKTV Gold have a history of passion for US Soaps, they've broadcasted Dallas/Dynasty/Knots Landing in 2001/2002 so perhaps they might be open to the idea of airing SB Season 2+. Currently I haven't got UKTV Gold but if they bought the rights to SB, I'll subscribe it ASAP. Plz don't give up, SB is the best soap EVER. It took us over 4 Yrs to get it back from the beginning. We deserve to watch all the amazing moments/storylines.

Hear, hear!

It's gonna be a while before Five run out of episodes to show so let's worry about the next step nearer the time.

It's best if we start contacting Five/UKTV Gold/ITV2 about Season 2+ now, this way the more ppl who contact we might stand a chance. But whatever happens, PLZ DON'T GIVE UP! Keep pestering these channels, i'm sure us SB fans can be very convincing. We thought we'd never be able to watch the end of Season 1 but with enough ppl bombarding Five with e-mails/pnone-calls we made ourselves very clear.

I think it ended at the right time in late 1999. Year 3 too me was a letdown after the brilliant Terror Island and Shockwave in Year 2.

Yeah 1999 was a weaker year than the previous two but I think it still had life in it.

SB had pleny of life left in it!
A show as silly as that has an almost endless amount of stories to tell, as DOOL has already proved.

I've never been so gutted over a show being axed, as i was when they pulled the plug on my beloved Sunny B.

Sunset Beach totally had years of life left in it. The characters were so well drawn (well, most of them), that they could have continued on and on for years. It was only finding its stride in 1999. Besides, if the terrible Passions could last for 8 years, then so could Sunset Beach.

It was ahead of the time in many ways. Flashbacks and fantasies, turkey baster pregnancy, focusing on younger characters with a modern family set-ups. Fast forward 5-10 years and TV in general has shifted in a younger direction; turkey baster pregnancies popping up in several shows, and the use of flashbacks as a story technique, etc. Sunset Beach would not be out of place in 2014.

I wouldn't call it a success here at all. It got a cult following here and the US etc but it wasn't successful at all.
