He's far from the only one, me too! I'm keeping up with this thread and will occasionally continue posting because it's one way of keeping track of what Microsoft are up to, and you certainly have to do that to avoid W 10 as they keep changing the upgrade criteria.

Ten or eleven months after it was released, I will decide whether or not I wish to upgrade to it while it's still free, assuming that I manage to continue blocking it before then. The bugs should mostly be ironed out by then (apart from bugs introduced by recent bug fixes) and reliable one-click spy-blocking software should be available and thoroughly independently evaluated.

They haven't "got me" yet on either of two W8.1 setups or my W7 setup but I need to stay ahead of the curve for it to stay that way and this place helps! And if W10 won't run my favourite oldie game as 8.1 won't, I will keep my W7 which does run it, for ever!

My issue is not expressing an opinion but fact poster keeps just monotonously repeating that he does not want 10.

We had all this with Windows 8 too. Just put him on the ignore list.

Because 10 is better.

What I have said is that I am in no hurry to update to Windows 10.

Windows 10 itself is ok in that it works faster than 7 and should be more secure than 7 and 8.1.
Remember I used it for a few months as a insider, not as my main Os.
If Windows 10 is that good, then surly people will update because they want to, not because they are being more or less forced to?

Trying to make Windows 120 more like a mobile phone OS have put people off and spying also goes against it.

The spying thing is overplayed as always, though surreptitious data usage willl be a poblem for a few.

An extended free upgrade offer is certainly a possibility, though more likely it will be a restarted offer, post deadline. Im expecting the consumer and enterprise versions to diverge far more mid 2016+, Bing coming more into play for consumers.

I do not think it is over played. Years back a Operating system was just that, I am going back to Amiga days here and maybe even up to windows me, early windows XP. It main purpose was to boot the computer and allow you to use other software. they did not want to know what you was doing or cared.

I know things have changed and it is all this cloudy crap now and we want to know what you are looking at so we can chuck adverts at you. But that should never be in a Os, well certainly not a computer one anyway. We put up with it on phones and tablets and their walled gardens but some people are not going to put up with it on their computers.

I can see where MS wants to go, lets get people onto Ten eventually force software developers to use the App store if they want their software on the windows platform. Then block anything else. May not happen for a few years, but it will.

This is my point, it is not just a Os, it is is a way of getting us to use other MS products. Bing being built in, thankfully it don't seem to be working and people are ignoring cortana on the desktop.

You don't have to do it but it is helpful to the developers in fixing bugs. It does not matter how well tested a product is before it is released it cannot catch all bugs.

A third-party commercial application I use did once say they were greatly aided by this feature as Microsoft were able to provide them with info to help fix the bug.

I don't always opt to send crash info to Microsoft or whoever. But sometimes I do.

So you have seen the metrics since launch for Cortana searching analytics for many differing products/services have you. I expect not.
I cannot elaborate as under NDAs, but can tell you its been very successful and for many 'click throughs' to all kinds of company products/services.
One example that really took one service provider by storm was from calling up links to their online broadcasting content from Cortana.

I think they'll see what the upgrade figures have been like nearer the deadline. If it's still just a minority of Win 7/8 users then they will extend, otherwise not.

One interesting thing I noticed is that MS are sort of now telling us 10 is more 'service' than 'OS'.

That seems a bit strange in that I see the likes of Mail, Skype, Bing and even Cortana as services, not the OS. Its fascinating really in that even Office is moving towards a cross platform service, to avoid being seen, at least long term, as a dead end service.

Does anyone get the issue of the start bar popping up automatically? I turned off cortina but that doesn't help.

TBH that's actually quite handy. I don't see any disadvantage in disabling features users don't want or need. Performance increases are negligible but slight improvement in boot. Hard to tell with an SSD though !

It's got something like 20% market share. Still quite a way to go before it's any threat to Google. Bing has been improving slowly though with search result relevance IMHO. But Google still king so far.

With XP and 7 you had a choice, with ten you don't

On beta news a couple of months back. MS would deny it as they love us to think Bing is doing great.
Most people even with Windows Ten will open their normal browser and go to Google.

It is not really about performance, it is about cutting down the amount of information that is sent to MS.

Yes I appreciate that. No matter though, our illustrious leaders are working on new powers that make MS look decidedly amateur!

MS have probably faked statistics for Bing, based on the button placed on Windows phones which gets constantly triggered accidentally unless you mechanically disable it. I went to far as making a clear plastic cover for my phone out of a cd envelope, then slipping in a rubber pad to cover the button. On all the Windows forums, I don't think I've ever come across anybody who doesn't actually hate Bing and Microsoft's aloof responses to anyone who criticises it.

I'm also among the ranks of those who have no intention of taking up the offer of a free upgrade from Windows 7. My PC works perfectly well at the moment and I don't want to take the risk of several old but often used programs not working with it. As for Cortana, there are only two words that I would want to say to it.

Its years since I bothered with Now, though if I said to myhone 'Go! Now!' it just might quip back 'two great products!'.
