When I upgraded to Windows 10, I had to change the volume levels which had been set to 50 %

Yes, its often hard to guage. Norton identifying Thunderbird as a trojan I found humerous.

So yes, they have fixed all they know. Thunderbird has to be one of the safest choices, even for use on W10.

The problem, is there are very other email clients available now, it seems as if they think we all use web based email.

This is a known feature of W10 (not a bug) and has affected many people, me included.

Microsoft have decided that not only should everyone use the most up to date OS, all the drivers should be updated to the most modern and highest standards too.

Create a Restore Point for C: (Press Windows key & R and type systempropertiesprotection)

Then go to your manufacturer's Support page and download and install the Chipset and old Audio Drivers.

For your further convenience, Microsoft will decide to undo this change when Windows Update next runs, so you must stamp hard on its neck.

Have you looked for a driver for your sound card/chipset?

It's also worth looking at the Advanced properties in Device Manager to see if there are settings you can tweak.

Thank you

I followed an online tutorial (I'm a technical ignoramus) and updated my sound card or something...worked a treat!

re: automatic updating of drivers thru WU - there's a setting to disable this (although some claim it doesn't work). Info here

This is of interest to me because one of my W7 machines is overclocked and the gfx card bluescreens with the latest driver when o/c, but works fine with older versions (or latest driver and stock speeds). I don't want to upgrade to W10 if I'd keep getting the latest Nvidia driver forced on me, and losing my o/c.

Has anyone tried the driver fix in the link above ?

Windows and their sodding updates!

Thank you

Another niggle - I seem to have lost spell check.

I've gone into devices and typing, both options were on so I turned off auto correct and left the other one on, restarted and still nothing. I want the underscoring back!

Spell check in which application? A web browser? That's not a Windows problem.

On DS for example, mis spelled words would be automatically underscored, since changing to 10 this has stopped. Web browser is Firefox, same as before.

You have to install the dictionary:

Thank you, it's back!

Weird, I have no recollection of ever installing it before, perhaps senility is setting in

And / or a browser setting may need to be enabled

eg FF Tools/Options/Advanced/Check my spelling as I type

I don't have a Dictionary installed just now.

I've had to bugger around before with this issue

There is a "check my spelling as I type" option in the advanced settings but like a lot of things with Firefox I think it may have broken a few releases back. Either way putting a dictionary on seems to get it going again

Could also be related to the regional version of Firefox you have. If you get it from the main download link it gives you the US version by default. Not sure if it maybe disables the spellchecker if your locale is detected as not being US...

I've had that selected for ages. I just tested again by uninstalling Touchpad driver which was giving me BSODs a few months ago.

Now, after a reboot, I get generic working MS driver.
Then, Windows Update forces it back to working Synaptics 2011

Maybe the dodgy 2015 one has been withdrawn?

My conclusion is that the block is ignored.

Hide the Update, instead, before it is installed.

=-=-=-=

I've also just found that my HP Support page will no longer give me Vista and W7 drivers since it is auto-detecting my W10.

Fortunately, I have several backup copies of my old drivers which I made while thinking "I wonder if these pages will always be available"

Not to be rude, but this is another example where people blame Windows 10 for a problem when it's a 3rd party software issue.

Well the issue only arose after I switched to Windows 10 so I don't think it's entirely unreasonable to link the two.

Not to be rude, but I came here for help (which I gratefully received), not to bolster whatever point it is you're trying to make.

I think ComputerActive actually recommends it's continued use if using a client or storing emails locally is your thing. Their only gripe is that things have moved on and most people now access emails on multiple devices so web email is preferable.

I have read a further article on the subject which states Thunderbird development has now been given to the open source community to look after so things may once again improve.

I don't use Thunderbird on my Mac simply because the UI is awful and dreadfully dated. I prefer Postbox which was originally based on the Thunderbird engine.

This thread is hilarious. Like I said previously, people should have to sit some form of test before ever being allowed near a computer.

Scenario - my hot water has run cold - it must be the utility companies fault. My tyre has got a puncture it has to be the car manufacturers fault. I can't make my computer run right it has to be Microsofts new operating system that's at fault.

Just for once it might just be the user that's at fault eh?

Since I find all other Clients and their UIs to be awful, I have so far remained with Thunderbird.

All very much the same, at least with TB you can change a lot of the UI to suit. I use it as I find the UI of most webmails to be nothing different. Just convenient when away from home.

Are we talking about on a Mac or Windows? I think it looks fine on Windows but on a Mac it looks like it belongs in a museum.
