I have an oldish laptop that does not really work well with W10. So I removed it, blocked two updates for W8.1 KB3035583 and KB2976978 as recommended and all was well until recently. Now W10 wants to download itself again and there seems to be no way to stop it, I repeated the procedure with the two updates that somehow were back again, but the little shit still wants in. I had to stop an automatic installation of updates, so now I have about 75 updates waiting and when I want to install those, W10 download starts instead. Any ideas what I can do? Thanks. I used to like MS, but they are pissing me off lately, bring Ballmer and Sinofsky back!

Thanks. Looks like the group policy is working even if the WU now always shows W10 logo and "Downloading Windows 10" while it downloads W8.1 updates. Something must be messed up

It is all these Ultra laptops now, slower processors and small screen and awful touchpads with the buttons integrated into them.
If I was going for a laptop I would by a proper one, not these low powered ultra things. For sure, not power machines, but for a lot of domestic use, quite adequate. |

I now suspect it's just showing the wrong picture and title in WU and it's downloading the actual W8.1 updates, not W10
I will abort it if it really is W10. That's a Microsoft Cockup™ one too many for me.

Can't remember the article I was reading but from a well known site, and the fastest growing market is the 2 in 1 hybrid market which gives people the convenience of a tablet, but the useability of a laptop.

TH2 is finally here. You can download it using media creation tool. You have to download a new media creration tool - the old one will not work.
If you hover a cursor over the mct listing in file explorer, it tells you it is for version 10586. 61% downloaded! |

Note that MCT is now correctly detecting the original Install Language, which is necessary to keep Apps, Files and Settings (instead of Keep Nothing)
The MS Blurb says you can check Install Language by going to Settings > Time & Language or Control Panel > Region. However, I believe this to be incorrect. That displays Locale, your local regional keyboard and language settings. Small point, but it matters for downloading the correct iso. My systems are en-US but my locale is en-GB (hangover from being on Insider Previews) Others who have bought their computers abroad may be affected. Install Language is correctly listed by 3rd party Belarc Advisor |

Updated an old bios laptop, a modern eufi laptop, and a Linx8 tablet today. All went smoothly without any hitches.
So far, the update looks really good, feels snappier and I do not think I will even have to do a clean install on any PC. I recommend using the media creation tool rather than via windows update mechanism, based on my good experiences today (to be fair I have not tried the insitu upgrade but based on experiences of 10240, I did not even want to try). |

My laptop failed with the WU method, so I'm upgrading via the Software download now. |

Done the upgrade via the upgrade tool. I'll likely do a clean install at one point again

Both machines done one with update other with creation tool. Both worked fine.
Got a brand new, still in the box, HP laptop to update in the next couple of days. Hopefully all will go well with that. |
