Same difference. Windows 7, believe it or not, is also made by Microsoft. They meddled with Vista, and before that XP. It's non-stop meddling!

I don't use Cortana, Edge, Groove Music, Films & TV et cetera, but they aren't the OS. I'd recommend Windows 10 for its efficiency alone.

If like me you use Parallels on a Mac you can have many versions of MS Windows as VMs. I have W7 W8.1 and W10.

I keep all three updated and so like clothes I can change them when I want - perfect.

How is Parallels these days? I haven't used it for about four years, but I'm thinking of getting a new iMac and running W10 on it via Parallels. Have you had any problems with it?

But it is a different meddling. Most of XP meddling was security updates, not sure about Vista as I did not use it much, so I can not remember much about it apart from that I had a free update to it on my laptop from XP and used it for a month and went back to XP, That was before I decided to try linux and put that on it.

Windows 7 again mainly stability and security updates until a few weeks back when they put the spying stuff on.

I agree it is very efficient, which is why I updated my brothers laptop a few weeks back to it, works better on it than Windows 7 did.

My first PC had windows 95 on it, after coming from the Amiga because CBM muck things up and went bankrupt. My mates machine is a 233, so yes it is old and is slow, well compared to what is available now. It still works, or will do once I sorted out the switch. It is only used these days for the Yamaha Daughter board, so runs Cakewalk to with his keyboard (music) connected via midi and then the sound is sent to a mixing desk and then back to his Windows XP machine which runs Cool Edit.
This is why these machines are not on the net, in fact to get them on the net a Ethernet cable have to be moved from another machine to them.

He have a Pentium II board and chip there in a box, I am going to see if that works, if it does then, I have a old ATX PSU that will do the job as that board can take a ATX PSU and try and get a cheap case to stick it in.

The sound card is ISA and yes there are better sound cards these days at half the price that one was, but none have got a the pins to put a wave table, which the Yamaha needs.

CoolEdit became Adobe Audition a decade ago though, XP is now end of life after 15 years. You can't expect vendors to keep supporting things forever. It's almost like you + friend post in 2015 but live in 2002.

Things aren't the same as they were in 2002. Now we live in an era of very fast internet, which enables cloud conectivity and the new monetisation model of windows, which is selling additional services and software in the cloud, rather than charging for the OS.

Your friend should probably upgrade the hardware as basic PCs are so cheap now relative to a months salary and stop moaning or the alternnative is to put on the tin foil hat and stick with an old distro from Linux and shut off the modern day entirely and live in a bubble from a decade ago.

He have got a updated machine, well kind off, it is my old Asus board, and AMD quad core cpu and 4GB of DDR3 memory and that runs Windows 7, that is used for video editing and runs fine, maybe need a bit more memory and a better video card at some point.

The XP machine which runs Cool edit does what he wants it is a P4 and all it runs is Cool Edit. He did look at Audition, but there was stuff that is missing from it that is on cool edit and there was things he did not like. Granted that was a wqhile back, but as he said at his age he do not want to be mucking around with things, he just wants them to work,.
Also now Audition is subscription now anyway and he would not pay a monthly amount for it. sure if he was making loads of money, then maybe, but he is not.

He have produced some good stuff to be honest on cool edit and it fits the bill.

The 233 is only used as a sound module for the yamaha board, that is the best way to explain it as the yamaha have some good sounds on it.

Sure if he was making loads of money I expect he would update, but he is not and at his time of life, it is not worth it unless he have to. He enjoys what he does and getting people in to use the studio, it is only a small place in the basement, he gets a bit of pocket money.

No one is expecting support on Cool edit or Windows XP, I have no idea where you got that from, he knows they are past their sell by date, I know it, you know it. But not worth spending out money for a new Os for a P4 machine.

From the USB or disk if you choose to make a DVD, you have repair options that can look at your windows installation and fix it and also do a complete reset.

TBH, the best way to get your computer back up and running is to make a image using one of the back up software available and then restore using that.

The wording 'another pc' is a little misleading. You can use it on same pc as well.

In fact, this is usually the best option for doing a clean install. Windows 10 does have reset option, which more or less does the same thing, but has proved to be a bit problematic for some users.

i have used the reset function a few times for different reasons when I was a insider and it worked every time, but the same caution as normal, make sure everything is backed up

Does CoolEdit not work on Win7? Legit question, it seems like a waste to be keeping such an old PC for 1 bit of software.

Even if it is old 16bit code you could probably get it going under the 32bit edition of Win7/10.

Yes he would (presumably) still need the 98 box for the daughterboard but its one less PC to maintain.

Who hasn't bothered with the major update yet on Windows 10, Going to be a killer for these who are not on unlimited broadband.

You can still get ISA motherboards if needed (but are specialist kit and cost as such) but should have the required drivers to support more modern cpu's and OS's.

Wave tables are available i'm sure as soft mods now but i guess that the owner doesn't fancy changing anything but with that age kit it might be worth checking ebay for a few spares

Cool Edit works fine on Windows 7 as he have it installed on his video machine if he have to edit some audio. I said to him about combining the audio and video machines, but he prefers them separate so he can work on video and audio at the same time. I suppose if he is rendering a video, which can take a while he can carry on with some audio stuff and some of the real time audio effects can take a bit of processing power.

Oh you can get soft mods wave table and have been able to get them for years, I have a yamaha DX one, the problem is most will not work modern machines and they are not as good as hardware based ones. The other problem even with the speed of modern machines is latency.

Probably only people who have not renegotiated their deal. I just got 1 year unlimited broadband from Sky as I was out of contract for £2.50 per month plus line rental.

Sure there will be a few people who this is an issue, but they should probably not be using 10 anyway.

Interestingly, our friends across the Pond are more affected as unlimited broadband is not as common as in UK (legacy resulting because of the old BT monopoly means we have a pretty much single telecom infrastructure and of course BT are obliged to allow 3rd party traffic to use it).

It's 12GB + updates if it takes 4 attempts.....
