I've recently gone from a Chromebook to a Windows 10 laptop / Notebook. These are my findings.

1. The screen brightness is far easier to adjust and is much better on the Chrome. There is keys on the keyboard that do it. On this Windows 10 system, I've had to create a shortcut on the desktop to the power options in the control panel, and even then, the brightness doesn't go as low as I'd like for late evening.

2. Windows 10 has arrived in an age where some of its competition takes 7 seconds to boot up. This far exceeds that. And no wonder, with all the bloatware. It is well worth downloading CCleaner and seeing what is going to load on startup. I prefer something to load when I want it to load. So If I want i-tunes to open, I'll open it. there was mcaffee, i tunes helper, and umpteen other unnecessary things. Its going a lot smoother since they got disabled / removed.

3. Whenever I run CCcleaner, it tells me Microsoft Edge needs to be closed to clean the cache. I use Chrome, and Edge isn't in the startup options of Ccleaner. I don't open it. So it looks like more processes running that are taking up CPU in a bid to get us to spend more on Hardware.

4. The start menu is awful. I wish I could revert to classic.
The first 3 of your problems have nothing to do with Windows 10.
1. Most manufacturers allow brightness adjustment via function keys
2. Again, the maker of your PC is to blame for the crapware. Do a clean install or uninstall some of it.
3. It sounds like a bug in Ccleaner. Are you using the latest version?
4. You can modify the Start menu to remove tiles, or use some 3rd party utilities to fix it.

I'd already changed the default folder within my YouCam settings to Desktop, but it still resurrected the Documents/YouCam folder when I re-ran the program. After some Googling I uninstalled PowerDVD, another Cyberlink product that I never use. I'll reboot and re-check to see if I've made any progress shortly...

[Edit] This may be a silly question but what would happen if I remove YouCam altogether? My laptop came with the program preinstalled, and it seems to do something if I use Skype, so I've always assumed that my camera will stop working without YouCam.
You cam should be separate to your camera, all your camera need is the drivers and you should be able to uninstall you cam and the camera should still work in software like Skype. I said should work as some manufactures do silly things now and again. Anyway you should be able to get the drivers online for the camera from the manufacture of your laptop,

As for saving things on the desktop, not really the best place to put them.

Most laptops uses a FN key and a function key to adjust the brightness, the FN key is normally, but not always on the bottom left of the keyboard.

As for the brightness, that could be to do with the manufacture, not windows itself.

2. Windows 10 has arrived in an age where some of its competition takes 7 seconds to boot up. This far exceeds that. And no wonder, with all the bloatware. It is well worth downloading CCleaner and seeing what is going to load on startup. I prefer something to load when I want it to load. You can not compare any windows with Chrome in the way you are trying to. Chome by it very nature is a limited OS, based mainly online. Windows is a different kettle of fish and while I do have my doubts about Windows 10, it is the fastest windows on boot up compared to other versions, but that could because everything seems to be in a hibernation mode.

Strange because if you do not use edge then it is not loaded into memory, Edge is not running on mine and if I run Ccleaner I do not get that message either.

I did notice on checking that Cortana is running, which is strange because I thought that was disabled.

4. The start menu is awful. I wish I could revert to classic.
I agree, but that is one of the easier things to fix, classic shell will give you a normal start menu or Start is back is what I use, but that is not free.

I don't permanently save things to my desktop. Whenever the Save As... dialogue opens I want it to start on Desktop so that, if I want to, I can just quickly press Enter on my keyboard, then I can file things away or delete them later without having to look for them. Saving things to a YouCam folder isn't really the best place to put them either, n'est pas?

I think I will uninstall YouCam. I think my reticence is mainly due to once upon a time removing some DVD/media bloatware from a laptop only to discover much later that, drivers or not, I had no software that could play a DVD.

Don't forget, ccleaner has a historic habit of slightly pretending to be useful.

Successfully uninstalled YouCam, although it first asked me to switch Skype off then took about 5 minutes to complete the task. Skype still works fine.

Assuming that your post was directed at me:

Whenever my 'Save As...' dialogue box pops up the default folder is '..Documents/YouCam', an entirely useless folder that I sometimes delete, but is resurrected every time I Skype somebody. I'd much prefer to drop things onto my desktop by default. Does anybody know how to set the default folder*?

(*Note that the new 'Save Locations' settings in Windows 10 only let you choose which hard drive to use, not which folder.)

I first came across Cyberlink and PowerDVD bloatware years ago.

They're OK, but other Apps are available and it shouldn't be a problem getting rid of them.

VLC is a very popular free Media Player with ability to play and stream almost anything.

Skype will detect your vidcam. Uninstall/reinstall it if not.

Yes, I already use VLC for watching movies, but thank you for the recommendation. And as I mentioned up there somewhere, ^^ Skype still worked fine after I uninstalled YouCam, so all is well with the world.

Ah, yes, you can do some strange camera things with You Cam on skype, which is why it combines, but just gimmicks really.

Lots around, some do ok, some don't. DS is a bit over the top sometimes on their moderating.

It is on if you want it, I don't own the site but it aims to be a alternative to DS: http://discussionsspot.invisionzone....11-windows-10/

There are many alternatives but for the most part, people here are generally caring persons who want to help. There are a few who seem to revel in disrupting threads deliberately, but compared with other forums (to be fair) they are more irritating than downright offensive. US sites can be quite nasty at times but equally the good guys will go to the end of the earth (oxymoron?) to help.

Mind you if the DS management fail to listen to the damage they are doing to this site, maybe people will consider an alternative!

PC Support on this forum has been patchy, like sunspot cycles. I think it's currently in a good phase.

Depends on who the regulars are and their work-life commitments.

Sometimes even the simplest questions don't get answered.

I like helping out as a Thank-you to when I got my own first home computers and was trying to learn XP features and others were very kind with their time for me.

(and messing about is a hobby too, like some do Sudoku or crosswords)

I also frequent pcadvisor forums (Click the Burger) . I'm not seeking another forum/site

You'd be better having a dedicated board for technical discussions (such as the Windows 10 thread), rather than lumping it into "General Discussion".

I would join that if there were more threads that interested me.
I also sometimes go on the Money Savings Expert - Techie Suff board, if it's quiet in here.

Its not active enough for that yet, The plan was to see if there was interest on the Windows 10 thread then it gets to a full area when its gets more busy.

Worth noting that TH2 now has an "update and shutdown" option at last ie like previous versions.
