More updates, got a welcome screen.

Hmm, after disabling lots of things to speed up start-up at Microsoft's behest get a pretty rubbish picture to click before my cool account picture and then Windows appears.

Worth noting that TH2 now has an "update and shutdown" option at last ie like previous versions.
That is a good thing

Also fixed my 'start' button not responding to left click.

The first 3 of your problems have nothing to do with Windows 10.
1. Most manufacturers allow brightness adjustment via function keys
2. Again, the maker of your PC is to blame for the crapware. Do a clean install or uninstall some of it.
3. It sounds like a bug in Ccleaner. Are you using the latest version?
4. You can modify the Start menu to remove tiles, or use some 3rd party utilities to fix it.
I am of the view that most crapware is part of the OS.
Anything that never gets used can be though of as crapware, IE being one.

Crapware also adds to security concerns so at least by forcing these updates on everyone, it keeps the Edge and IE 'crapware' out of some mischief.

And yes, 10 is far less likely to play nice with ccleaner than any other MS OS before it, user control being less now.

Of course you are entitled to your view, but the term crapware is generally as below

"Crapware (also know as "bloatware" or "junkware") is the stuff that hardware makers install onto their devices on top of the operating system."

As IE, Edge etc is included part of the OS (along with lots of other things), then by accepted definition they are not "crapware" even though they may be crappy,

Personally, I think a statement like yours just serves to confuse people who are less informed.

Windows is 30 years old today (20/11/2015)

extract from wikipedia

Windows 1.0 was released on November 20, 1985 as the first version of the Microsoft Windows line. It runs as a graphical, 16-bit multi-tasking shell on top of an existing MS-DOS installation, providing an environment which can run graphical programs designed for Windows, as well as existing MS-DOS software.

I hope Groaniad is not a reflection of opinion of "Grauniad's" editorial views .

Which can be sorted by changing the settings back.

My now ancient Surface Pro was gathering dust so I thought why not to try W10 again. It went from W8.1 directly to Build 10586 and what I like about it is that the old pro liked to get rather hot doing nothing while now it's room temperature and the fan keeps quiet. I am still not enamoured with the touch and a lack of touch gestures, but at least everything works fine so far. I think this is what the RTM in the summer should have been like.

One shouldn't have to. MS arrogance is a pain in the arse.

100s of miilions of man hours by everyone putting everything as it should be.

Upgrades specifically say Keep Files, Apps and Settings.

MS should make that do what it says.

Easy to access options or buttons could be provided for resetting to defaults.

I'm not sure what your rant is about. However, there did seem to be something wield going with language settings; it seems to assume you are in the US unless you force it otherwise. It would be interesting to see if this has changed in the latest release.

Call100 was joking. The Guardian was affectionately known as the Grauniad because of its legendary propensity for spelling mistakes back in manual type setting days.

Lots of stuff gets 'lost'

System Restore Off
Network Shares need setting up again
Homegroup Settings
etc

I did not think to check restore settings - you are right. Upgrade turned it off. No excuse for that - hardly an obscure setting!

I made a list, which I saved on my hard drive and posted here a few months ago.

But I'm not perfect either and can't find it.

The upgrades also turn 'Fast Shutdown' back on again, even though those that have turned it off have obviously done so for a good reason (dual booting, external hard drive attached etc).

One thing that is irritating me with TH2 is it keeps resetting the icons I have set to display on task bar, hiding them in the pull down menu. It is random, and not always same icons.

One thing I've been getting calls about is since TH2 its added or changed to a US keyboard.
It seems random, but one of my PCs had done this too.
All updates via windows update.

It is being reported on other forums that MS have pulled the 10586 iso. If you use the standard MCT link or the Techbench link, it now reverts to 10240.

Interestingly, if you still have the updated MCT, it still pulls down 10586 (tried it today).

It seems people on 10240 who had also been notified of the upgrade via auto upgrade have found that the notice has disappeared, and Windows reports PC is up to date.

So there is something massive going on.

There is no explanation from MS yet for this, and one is led to speculate why eg a major security issue?

Are we at risk - it is not possible to downgrade without keeping files etc?

That's interesting as no particular problems have been reported, have they?
I haven't had any on 3 PCs upgraded (or clean installed).

Keep us updated from these 'other forums', won't you?
