I know what the list is called. i am not looking for Cortana or Edge in all apps, but they are there and there is no way to get rid of them.
I can not find any quick access part of the start menu, with Windows 7 i could pin a shortcut to the start menu on the right hand side, I can not din anyway of doing that on the windows 10 start menu, you can pin to start, which gives you a tile or pin to taskbar. Above file explorer, settings and power, there is a blank space up to where it displays my name. I presume that frequently used software is displayed here, I switched it off on my machine. i do type to find things, I am used to that from Linux, but the search on 7 was on the menu, not on the task bar like in windows 10. The Windows 7 start menu may have not been perfect, but it was not as rigid as windows 10 menu is. I wish I could go back to 7, but I can't, I think I may stick windows 8 back on with the start is back menu again. It doesn't even work as it's supposed to, as on most of my computers it consists of things I've never even clicked on, and my most used programs (Google Chrome etc) never appear on the list. You can easily remove items from the list, but they don't seem to be replaced. Would be much better if it was a 'Quick Access' list that you could pin things to. I know you can pin things to Start, but unless you only have a few tiles pinned, you're going to have to scroll for it anyway. |

Your argument is inconsistent.
"I do not like windows 10 menu, so I am thinking of going back to 8 and using a 3rd party menu" You can use 3rd party menus on Windows 10 as well eg replace 10 menu with a 3rd party start menu such as Start10. In fact a lot of the old 8 3rd party menus still work. i have not used it on this install as I am trying to get used to the windows 10 start menu, the same thing I did with Windows 8.1 for a while, try to use it as it was. I have paid for startisback, so I would use that. |

It would save your constant moaning that you can't find things. Quote:
Although I mostly like the Windows 10 Start menu, I agree the 'Most Used' list isn't good.

I'm not bothered about how Start Menu looks, within reason, but I would like it to work better.
It's just taken 8 seconds to respond. Search is hopeless |

For me, the Search facility in the Windows 10 QuickLaunch bar usually responds immediately when initially clicked, but often never comes back with a result of a search, even something easy such as Control Panel. Disabling the online option helps but isn't a complete fix. I'm not sure, but I think the recent service pack might have improved it.

Tried this on a number of W10 devices I have to hand. |

There is a 'Quick Access list available in the W10 start menu. See HERE for instructions on how to use it if you have files you want to get to regularly.

What have you tried so far to rectify it?
Upgraded to 10586 recently, previously tried all the Registry hacks and PowerShell Package Updates and Clean Installs. I've also seen all the people (lots and lots) with problems on the MS Forums. My conclusion is that W10 Start Menu (and Search) is just flaky. Not to mention, many people have had other strange problems. I don't mind too much, I make sure I always have working systems, by workarounds or restoring working images. But W10 is not stable, for many, in my view. |

It's happened on both of my Insider laptops since January (now no longer Insider laptops, since July)

The search and Start Menu work beautifully on both of my machines. One of which is Sony Vaio that has been recommended not to upgrade.. |

Indeed. People don't generally seek out forums where they can post praise, or just to comment that they've had no problems. My guess would be that the majority of people have had nothing but the most minor issues, which they either waited for MS to fix or found solutions online. Such is life.

It was a quick access list for favourite programs in the Start menu that I was after.

Under Settings > Personalization > Start you can switch "Show most used apps" on. You don't get to choose which ones make the list, but you can trim unwanted ones. Alternatively you can right-click any exe file icon or shortcut and select "Pin to Start" (as a resizable, movable tile). Or as call100 said, use the taskbar. Not to mention that you can place a shortcut on your desktop or in any folder on your PC. Some people seem to prefer looking for problems rather than looking for solutions.

It's the pinning of tiles to the start that they seem to be hung up about. As there are solutions out there for them, I don't see the necessity in making it the issue they obviously think it is...

My most used program by a long way is Google Chrome, yet it doesn't appear in the 'Most Used' list on any of my computers, whereas things like 'Get Started' and 'Get Skype' seem to be immovable until you right click and remove them yourself. I was just saying it would have been nicer if it either worked as it was supposed to, or allowed you to pin apps to it. But I'm sticking with the Windows 10 Start menu as I like it otherwise. I already have my favourites pinned to the taskbar, and have all the installed apps and programs in the tiles section as small tiles. |

If you're talking about my posts, I wasn't looking for any solutions as such. I was pointing out that the 'Most Used' feature of the Start menu doesn't work as it's supposed to.

What is it that you're trying to achieve, exactly? You seem to have your programs pinned to your Start menu. Perhaps resizing them would suit you better? I agree that the "Most used" list doesn't appear to function as its name would suggest. Whether it's supposed to work as you want it to is anyone's guess at this stage.
My guess is that Microsoft is using the 'Most Used' list to highlight things they'd like you to click on.

That's because there are so many problems, and hardly any solutions.

I'll remember next time it locks up that it has a _preference_ for being user hostile.

See the instructions below.....When it's set up you can access it from the file explorer link by clicking on the arrow to the right.
I've no doubt it won't be any good to you, but that would be more your failing than the OS IMO. Remind us why you aren't using something like StartMenu X or one of the other TP menu's? If i wanted to say add a bit of software to it i can't. so if I wanted to add Adobe photoshop i can't find a way of doing that. I can add it to the taskbar or the to the start menu as a tile. The reason I was not using a third party menu was to try and get used to the windows 10 menu. People on her complain that we don't not try things before complaiing about them. so I thought I would try the windows 10 menu. |
