Why do you look for updates daily?
They are installed automatically
Actually I tend to do that as well so I can do it in my timescale rather than when windows chooses.

Now it is making sense. Best thing to do is download iso from here (dual home/pro), click on it and run setup.exe and you will update to PRO now, and then get subsequent updates.

Will I need my key if I re-install win 10 pro 64 bit using this method?

I don't have a question, just need a rant ...

The latest update (the one to version 1511) is extremely annoying. First of all it didn't bother to warn that this was a large update (upgrade?) and would take an age to install. But then it messed up my settings...

- Restored my soundcard setting back to the default, removing the customisations I'd made to make the laptop speakers sound better (I still haven't managed to fix that)
- Same with the graphic card settings, it restored that back to the defaults
- disabled hibernate
- removed the changes I'd made to 'what happens when you close the lid' in power settings so that when I closed the lid it put the laptop into Sleep rather than Hibernate (obviously I suppose) and when I switched the laptop back on asked for the password
- changed my default browser from Firefox
- changed other default programs (Irfanview, VLC Player, Winamp) back to MS's programs
- There's probably more yet that I haven't discovered, it's only been a couple of hours since it was installed

I wouldn't have minded quite so much if there had been some kind of warning beforehand, but there wasn't. Why do Microsoft think they know best and how dare we think we can customise our own computers!

... rant over.

You're not alone, took well over an hour to install for me and changed a few settings that it wasn't supposed to.

Well installed the update on both laptops the other day, and the problem I was having with Cortana not working on my laptop in my bedroom, it now seems to be working.

If you have XP or Vista, you would hope Santa brought you a new machine.
Everyone else can get W10 for free.

I would be interested in anyone who replies in the affirmative though.

(My older teenage daughter, who was with us, got a new budget W10 Acer Celeron 15.6" under the tree. It's very nice though. She was delighted and started crying and squeaked her appreciation, which set us all off)

Download and re-install an old driver. It is annoying though.

Make a System Restore point first.

You should not need a key as yiu have already upgraded once bt makr sure yiu have yiur 7 pro key handy just in case. Note ou can upgrade or clean install as you prefer, but you will ned to create a bootable usb stick or dvd to clean install.

The re-install would not work no matter what method I tried.
It kept giving various reasons for being unable to do it.

The most common reason was not suitable for my language group or something along those lines.

So what I did was to revert to a hard drive that I had my original 8.1 pro on and then wait a couple of days before I could upgrade.

All seems well at the moment.

Houston! I have a problem!

Not necessarily a Windows 10 problem (or it might be) - After installing Windows 10 I installed the display adaptor driver and all was well. Several minor display driver updates later, the latest one installed and I had a major problem with it, so it can't be used. I rolled back the driver to the last one that works just fine and all was well. - The problem is that every so often, (usually when I leave the PC idle for some time) it just installs the latest driver and that messes it up again, and requiring me to roll it back again.

So how do I stop this update? Is it because it was once installed and residing in the system32 drivers folder and so needs removing. Or is something else happening?

Have you tried installing the proper OEM driver from AMD, Nvidea etc?

That's why I don't know if it's a Windows 10 problem or a AMD problem as I have at some stage installed updates software and driver from the manufactures site. So don't know if it's windows updating it or some AMD programme updating it.

Anyway I have downloaded the very helpfully suggested (thanks!) updater stopper and it has found a display diver update that I have now hidden. I'll have to see if that does the trick first and then go on from there.

thanks for everyone's help!

Oo! Now that sounds like a most helpful programme. Thanks for all your help.

EDIT: Had a quick look and it looks like a great programme! I can also back up all my Satellite card and printer drivers that I always have to hunt for when doing a major re-install.

This works as well (on windows 10 also).

Can anyone recommend a reliable driver update app? I've just bought a second hand Dell and upgraded it to Win10. I know some of the drivers are out of date but unfortunately the Dell online update tool isn't working for me. I could update every driver manually from the Dell site but I'd rather do an online scan and auto update if possible.

I know a lot of these driver update apps are basically malware, but hopefully there are a few good ones out there.

Really better to do it manually. Never yet found a reliable one.

I've got the free upgrade to 10 but not installed it yet. How long does the install take to complete and are there any prompts to attend to (in other words, do i need to sit by the pc!).

All the ones I've done have taken up to a couple of hours, quickest was about 55 minutes.
No you don't need to sit by the PC, set it off and leave it.
Best upgrade from the Media Creation Tool though, IMO, rather than just the automatic windows update.

Just a minor clarification, for those where pc is dual boot of two windows versions, you do have to sit at pc and select right os each time it boots.
