Indeed that will be the case but unless you want the new features or user interface there's no big reason to switch now, W7 security updates continue until 2020.

How did you get offered 1TB?
I had 1TB with office 365 free, ut decided not to renew as I have office 2010 anyway. I did get to keep the 15GB though. Did have a bing booster that worked when we first became insiders, think that was 100gb, so suppose they looked and said there you go, lets round it up. Not paid for 365 ever Myself at home, so nothing there. I have contributed quite a bit of valid feedback for insider and been pulled into a few offshoot groups, and did get a couple of 100gb offers and a t-shirt for that too, not seen that activated yet, in my account. I'm sure that's related. edit: I'm wrong it does list my two 100gb as offers, no end date. Use the MS office apps on Android and iOS all the time now, they are excellent and have been using the free W10 apps that qualify free with the Linx (10.1 or less). Nice to have MS office for home back and fee, none of that Libre office stuff, which was never the best experience. |

I think all Windows users will have to switch to 10 eventually because 10, I think, is the last operating system that they're releasing.

Mainstream support for 8.1 ends on 9 January, 2018. I'm assuming that mainstream support means support for home users.
https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/...-windows81-faq That's the ending of security updates etc. The ending of Mainstream Support just means that no new features will be added after that date, but everything is still perfectly safe to run. And will be kept safe until 2023. |

I did apparently have 190gb of storage on ondrive logged, all through addon offers I've had over the years. The camera one and another would have run out by now or very soon, knocking off about 30gb or so off that.

Based upon my experiences of Windows 10 so far (on multiple systems) and assuming things don't fundamentally change by the time Windows 8.1's extended support ends, it's going to be a very bleak time for Windows users.
Imo, Windows 10 is not fit for purpose. It's a glorified Beta OS and I can't believe so many people are sitting by happily and making excuses for it, nevermind actually defending it! The plethora of bugs & lack of functionality notwithstanding, I find it absurd that Microsoft seem to be going out of their way to ruin what could be a very fine operating system. I think I'll be sticking with 8.1 + Classic Shell for some time yet. |

Hopefully, it will be improved in the next year or two.
In the meantime, to take advantage of the Lifetime Free Upgrade to W10, a machine must be upgraded by the end of July, but it can then be rolled back to W7/8.1 to wait until it is safe to take the plunge again, perhaps. Make a System Image Backup first. |

Poking my head in here briefly
![]() I have Win 10 running across 2 laptops (ivybridge and haswell) and 2 desktops (1st Gen i7 and Skylake i5) brilliantly. There were a few quirks to begin with, the November update ironed out most of the kinks. I actually enjoy using Windows 10, it fixed everything wrong with 8.1 and made it better. The one thing I do like is the fact the OS is constantly evolving, it doesn't look the same as it did when launched. Windows 7/8.1 didn't change much if at all over their lifespan prior to Windows 10. My Mam had a bit of a learning curve with it as she was used to the quirks and stupidities of Win 8.1. Having used it more she prefers Windows 10, and so has anyone else I have come into contact with. |

I do find it hard to have any faith in a company that messed up Win 8 as badly as they did!

Make a System Image Backup first. Good idea to take advantage of the free lifetime upgrade before it expires at end of July, unless there are any rumours of that being extended? Though instead of backing up and installing over my W7 PC, I'm going to get a new SSD (cheap as chips these days) and do a clean install of W10 on it using the full download available from M$. You just need to provide a valid W7/W8 product key during the W10 install and then M$ keep a record of the hardware so the W10 licence is always available for activation if you need to reinstall W10 in the future. Can then put the W10 SSD in a drawer and go back to my W7 SSD until they've addressed all the issues stopping us from upgrading in the first place.

To date I genuinely have not experienced any issues with W10 and IMO it's their best to date. I don't even know why you would still be using Classic Shell on 8.1 ........ P.S. I have had them all from 3.1 upwards. Perhaps you could list all the issues you have encountered and then providing it isn't user error other members may be able to assist you in solving them. |

Just because you and others haven't had problems doesn't mean that all is sweetness and light. Many solutions can only be found by trial and error and often by advanced hacks. From what I have experienced over the last year with my own machines and helping others, it is not just simple user error. |

Indeed the one that caught my eye was this: "Unable to access Google and Google sites". Why? Because someone recently asked me to try to solve that very problem. On the latest Ubuntu software. On one laptop out of 3 running the exact same software, and connecting to the same router. And using the same DNS settings. |

My point is that many problems are reported directly on MS Forums.
Many of those will be user error but many aren't. Very little seems to be done about the genuine complaints. It took MS 2+ years to bring the Start Menu back for God's Sake. There was a huge kerfuffle about that. They don't seem to care if only a few tens or even hundreds of thousands have problems elsewhere. For DS members to pooh-pooh other DS members over their concerns is disrespectful when assurances have been made that the problems are not imaginary. |

A great many issues are user error, conflicts within different software packages etc. These can usually be identified with minimum effort. |

Again the missing start button was a storm in a teacup simply because people can't cope with change - folk need to get over things and move on. We live in truly pathetic times.

![]() Not all change is an improvement. I'm surprised someone who claims to be computer savy doesn't know that. |
