https://twitter.com/hashtag/build201...=news&src=tren I hope that's a joke. I thought all updates for Windows 10 were supposed to be free? I also like the way they are making such a big deal of Cortana. Does anyone actually use Cortana? Apart from a bit of playing around at the beginning, I just use the search box as I would in previous Windows. She's got a habit of asking just before I go to bed "Are you off to work?" She must think I do the night shift.

I like the way they suggest that the next major update is free only because it's an anniversary for Windows.

I think people seem to miss that not all the developments are made personally for them. Outside, in the big wide world, there are people who want the upcoming new features.
They are there to be used or not, by whoever. Build was primarily for developers so Joe Normal does not have to, or need to, understand most of it, if any..... |

Cortana is switched off and I don't care for Microsoft Edge too, Plus Facebook and Instagram is all ready on the internet browser. Also this was announced which most Windows users won't understand to use: http://techcrunch.com/2016/03/30/be-...to-windows-10/
I presume these new ones will be official 'Microsoft' ones but don't see what the fuss is about really? With Cortana it seems they are desperate for people to make more use of it, and desperate for her to appear more intelligent than she really is. ![]() Don't get me wrong. I can see that way of interacting with your computer will become more usual as technology and software improves. But at the moment you have to use stock phrases and wait to see if she has taken them in properly. And most of the time she'll just open up the browser for a search. It's just much quicker to click on an icon or do the search yourself.....for now. BIB I love messing around with Linux, so that interests me, but I'm not really sure what they are saying as such? Just that you can write Linux code without having to boot up a Linux distro, I suppose. |

There's already an official Facebook app in the Windows Store and an unofficial Instagram one (Instapic) that works pretty well.

Bash on Win10 ? It's not April 1 til tomorrow.
If it's true, it's a bad idea from MS point of view. The main thing that stops Win users going penguin is the command line malarkey. Once they've overcome that particular fear, there's nothing stopping them from crossing over to Linux. At least I'll be able to post sudo jokes http://xkcd.com/149/ . |

After moving from Windows 7, with Classic Shell, to Windows 10 also with Classic Shell I have found it just about bearable. It's been three months now since I started using Windows 10. Moving also seemed to cure a problem that I had struggled to find a solution to.
My laptop's battery seemed to lose charge even when switched off but still plugged in to a socket. Even though hovering over the battery icon showed my computer was charging the charge level never increased. After installing Windows 10 my laptop could charge up to full charge and I thought the problem was gone. I was wrong. The problem has returned. It loses 1% charge overnight which is what happened before Windows 10. |

If the PC is losing charge when plugged in then the is a problem with the charger or the battery, not Windows.

I'm not convinced some of the apps with 10 are better than the usual web pages. Some are different (eg web cricinfo and app cricinfo) and that's appreciated but facebook app is useless ![]() I'm on waterfox which is supposed to be faster than firefox (it's OK) but it wants to keep updating and I lose all my saved logins...whether I choose to allow the update or not. Please fix, Mr. Waterfox! |

With respect, that's an outdated view. Many modern varieties of Linux can be used without recourse to the use of a terminal and installing new programmes has never been easier via the use of software centers.
However, your comment about Linux versions that don't need terminal input is interesting - could you name some bash-free distro's that I could try in VM ? edit - apologies if this is a bit of a thread hijack |

There is a dedicated Linux thread in these forums. Have a look at it so this thread doesn't go off topic

Since when has this thread been on topic unless you count windows 10 bashing as being a worthwhile topic?
![]() BTW does anyone know when we will see the first version with the Bash shell ? I am extremely keen on this, my number one reason for preferring Mac to Windows is the Terminal. But I have to do a lot of support of Windows PCs connected to Raspberry Pis and I find Putty a real pain to use in comparison with a proper Unix shell. |

Anyway, apologies if I'm posting in the wrong thread but does anyone else sometimes get an unresponsive lock screen (I use PIN sign-in) and you can unfreeze it with CTRL-ALT-DEL (normally a keystroke or mouse movement presents the PIN number/password field)? |

The latest build released to insiders 14295 doesn't have any mention of it, but does seemingly include extensions for the Edge browser. https://blogs.windows.com/windowsexp...pc-and-mobile/ (I know that's about 14291, but 14295 is basically just bug fixes for that) |

Other Win 10 announcements can also be found on Terry Myerson's official blog since he's now taken over from Brandon LeBlanc as Microsoft's official spokesperson: https://blogs.windows.com/blog/author/terrymyerson/

W10 Insider version 14315 can now run natively bash.
This is now a clever move by MS - it truly differentiates Windows 10 from older versions. |

I saw that, that's a shell from Linux, isn't it. What would it be used on Windows for (genuine question) ? Are there any cross-platform tools that need it or is it just convenience?
The current windows systems are built more on the VMS model which as well thought out and was very popular till it got 404'd and may companies are very slow to change as its not that hard to find sites still running nt4 era hardware/software as they'll only replace it when it breaks. |
