About' is another simple method that most people will be familiar with from many Windows programs and browsers, W10 ought to have that, too, maybe it has.

Cortana won't help some, as I'm sure I'm not alone in not having or using a microphone on my PC and may never have one, but who knows.”

As I've said a couple of times, if you type "version" into the Cortana search box and click the first/top result, it takes you to a settings page with all the information you could wish for -

Windows 10 (in big type)

PC name
Workgroup
Edition Windows 10 Pro
Version 1511
OS Build 10586.164
Product ID
Processor
Installed RAM
System type 64 bit operating system
etc etc

It just doesn't take you to the old 'About Windows' screen. But that is still there, and can be brought up by typing "winver".

So if you are wedded to that particular screen (in which case you would know all about typing "winver") then you can still bring it up, but for a casual user, typing "version" will bring up all the info required.

ETA: Just for completeness I've tried typing "windows version" into Cortana, and this time it's the Control Panel 'System' screen that comes top. The one that you get to by right clicking 'This PC' and selecting 'Properties'.
The Settings screen comes second in the results.

Finally got the Insider Preview downloaded and am now running Ubuntu. So far, looks good.

I'm still bemused by the Windows update process though.
I kicked off the update Friday, had zero indication that anything was happening, or indeed was going to happen, then suddenly it appeared Sunday lunchtime. Looking at a data monitor I run on that machine I could see 1.2GB data downloaded late Sunday morning, so I assume that was it. But why does the process have to be so opaque and mysterious. I want to know how much is going to be downloaded and when it is going to happen when I request an update. I can understand if it's a Microsoft bandwidth issue, but at least please tell me what's going on Microsoft. Is it really rocket science to have a progress bar somewhere ?

I plan to upgrade from 7 to 10 in June but how many are waiting like me? I suspect that most people who want 10 will have downloaded and installed it by now.

Why wait until June? I suspect that a lot of people are waiting, mainly because someone told them to because of something they read somewhere.
Unless MS extend the free period I'm guessing there will be a flood of downloads toward the end of June.

In fact, it does not make a lot of sense to wait as the new build cycle means new bugs will always be introduced with older ones being fixed.

This cycle will continue until the development of Windows 10 significantly slows down, and even then will continue to a degree - nature of the beast.

In retrospect I would not recommend installing W10 RTM, but it runs decently with the Threshold. I am still not convinced about the continuous development, one tries to do local changes and local testing, but it does not always work like that, various side-effects may cause regressive errors in any part of the OS.

I just want to wait for the major release in June and may actually hold off until late July for any fixes to the June release. According to this, the last day for the free upgrade is 29th July.
http://www.zdnet.com/article/what-ha...-july-29-2016/

Is it possible to "split" the upgrade? By that I mean
- download W10 overnight on say July 19/20
- run the upgrade overnight on say July 20/21.

That way I pick up the July fixes and avoid the "last minute rush" at the very end of July.

I'm quite happy to wait as my W7 machine is working perfectly well and I am in no rush.

I don't quite see the logic of that, however:

Windows 10 is coming down via Windows Update now, unless you have stopped it using GWX Control Panel or similar. So it's on your hard disk ready to go.

What's so important about the June fixes?

Yes I have that, also Spybot "Anti Beacon" as I have read reports of "telemetry" being added to W7. If I disable GWX will that start the download?

To answer your other question "What's so important about the June fixes?" my impression that as a "major release" it is a W10 equivalent of W7 SP1. If I am wrong about that, I am happy to be corrected.

As I remember SP1 came out about a year after the launch of W7.

Windows update is set to "Check for updates but let me decide....etc). I like to see what is going in first.

Most of the online discussion about 'telemetry' in W10 is nonsense. There's other software and search providers I would be much more worried about.

Regarding disabling GWX, I'd just turn it off and then use the Media Creation Tool to install W10.

I don't know about a big update in June. It would be poor planning by MS to release a big update just before the upgrade cut-off, but you never know.

Latest guesstimates for the next major update, 'Redstone', is July which would be just before the free upgrade finishes. This guess is based on the the build number 1607 (16th July), because they did the same sort of numbering for the November release of 'Threshold', build number 1511.............It's as good a guess as any....
That said, IMO, it's pointless waiting for it before downloading 10.....

It really does not work like that. Dates are very variable, and fixes do not come that fast.

When W10 came out, the servers were overloaded for a week or so. It is bound to happen again.

for those interested ... SPYBOT anti Beacon

"win10 is a masterpiece of data collection" (telemetry) and for plenty of folk, this has put them off the idea of upgrading up to win10. M$'s own goal.

SpyBot Anti Beacon is a utility that can reliably turn off (most?) Win10's unwelcome behaviour. if you've read whats out there from the reports and M$. its still akin to being spied on.

its a freebie and the main program window has four tabs for four different functions or info screens. best to have all the entries to be green, that is all the spying turned off.

clicking the Immunize button at the bottom of the page, is the way to go. then tab2, etc. also as a portable version

Someone who is promoting their 'anti telemetry' software is the last person you would go to for impartial advice on what W10 is actually doing. Typing M$ also loses you all credibility.

Unless it has been completely re-engineered, SpyBot is an incredible resource hog. The best thing I ever did with that product was to remove it.

Does it do anything else than clear the checkboxes the OS shows during install/ update? So not worth installing a 3rd party program because of that.

when If you receive a message telling you that the Update Service has stopped, you will need administrators privileges.

To enable the Update Service:

– Open Spybot Beacon by right-clicking on the Spybot icon or shortcut, and choosing the option to “Run as Administrator”.

– Go to Settings (tick “Advanced User Mode” if you do not see “Settings”).

– In Settings, choose “System Services”.

– Here you can start the “Update Service”.

– Make sure you tick the check box that says “Active after every reboot”.

– Click “Apply” and “OK”, and restart Spybot.

btw, Spybot Anti-Beacon for Windows will disable the following:

Telemetry Hosts
Telemetry Services
Consumer Experience Improvements Program
Application Impact Telemetry
Steps Recorder
Wi-Fi Sense
Apps using advertising ID
P2P Windows Updates outside local network.

No you're not. You've got two eyes, just like the rest of us, but you choose to live with one eye closed.

What I don't understand is why your paranoia only extends to "M$". Do you think that third-party free software developers are paragons of virtue? You seem to think that Microsoft can't be trusted, and the solution is to rely on the kindness of strangers.

I'm not talking about forum members, I'm talking about third-party free software developers. What makes you think you're not installing more spyware? You seem to have selective paranoia that only applies to Microsoft.
