As I did say it told me it was unable to update the database files.
Any way it was years ago.

This is an interesting and potentially useful new Windows 10 development:

Microsoft has added a QR code to its infamous Blue Screen of Death in Windows 10. As of Windows 10 Insider Preview build 14316, when the operating system falls over, you get not only the sad ASCII smiley but also a QR square that contains an encoded URL that leads you to a webpage about your problem. Scan it with a smartphone or other handheld and your browser will be taken to the embedded web addresses.

Has anyone else received a second batch of updates, (arrived the next day) to the earlier smaller batch, yet,
they included one for MSRT this time. these seem to address much more serious issues than the earlier batch did.

I had a major update yesterday. It was practically a new build not sure what has changed apart from slightly bigger icons in the task bar.

blurb ses, quality improvements and security fixes. key changes include:

Improved reliability for IE 11, .NET Framework, LAN, edge, Win Update, logon, map apps, video playback, Cortana, USB and Windows Explorer.

better recognition of printers when a device resumes from sleep. fixed issues with lock screen. fixed issues with shutdown delays, buying apps in the Store, vid playback, facial recognition, Edge, logon, IE, Live Tile updates, .NET Framework, and Microsoft Installer (MSI).

fixed additional security issues with Security Account Manager Remote Protocol, HTTP.sys, secondary logon .NET Framework, CSRSS, Microsoft Edge, and IE 11.

You can take a selfie with it, too Although it's a good thing, this way you can check the error from another computer in the case this one won't come back.

Here's a weird thing. Both my laptop and my main desktop PC are running Windows 10. The PC is connected to my router via CAT5 cable and my laptop wirelessly.

I have set up a presentation on my laptop connected to a TV as a second screen (for the actual display) via HDMI. On the laptop, I change the task bar settings to hide so it doesn't appear on the TV display.

The strange thing is that when I go to my PC, the task bar has been hidden too. What is going on? How has a setting on my laptop affected my PC?

If you are logged in with your MS account your Windows preferences etc can be synced. They are stored on OneDrive...
Maybe that's the cause...
Have a look in Settings - Accounts - Sync your settings - Turn on or off what you want.

I don't know how true this is, but there's videos on YouTube where people are saying that USB microphone sensitivity is much better in Windows 7 and before and that there's been a sensitivity issue since Windows 8. They're claiming that the sensitivity only needed to be on about 30 for, I'm assuming, desktop microphones. Anyone know if this is true?

Not specifically Windows 10, but probably most relevant to those using it.

Finally got round to doing this and it works fine now. All the problems I had with the upgrade (black screen of death, driver problems, etc) were all solved by doing a clean install from USB instead.

Yep! A problem I was having seems to have been improved/solved since going back to Windows 8.1. I think I'll just get Windows 10 on USB sometime and do a clean install. I should have known doing an upgrade.

Have recently upgraded from Windows 7 to 10. Generally OK except that the scroll function on my touch pad no longer works. Anything I can do about this? My laptop is an Acer Aspire 5532, 6 yrs old.

Seen this before on Asus to re-enable the touchpad;

Otherwise you need to get the touchpad driver (synaptics) from Asus, not sure if there is a specific windows 10 one, but might be worth trying the W7 one.

I'd be interested to hear if anyone has upgraded an Acer 6930G laptop to W10. Pretty good in its day but as it's fairly old it's not on Acer's W10 supported models list so I'm a bit apprehensive about upgrading.

Make an image backup eg using Macrium Reflect Free. Then you can upgrade and if any proiblems easily revert.

My old ACER emachines laptop upgraded without any issues, and that was not listed.

The new start menu is an improvement in latest Insider build. All apps list opens by default now.

for future reference i had an issue with the start button and the tiles. i was able to use a number of other programs office, etc and thought it was a hang issue. after a few reboots the issue remained the same. but the download (below) and the youtube vid helped to resolve my issue.

Anyone know what the latest build of 10 is and it's there a download of it, i would need the pro version 64bit as i download that as a free upgrade last year.

I would need to fresh install it now the pc knows the license. i'm think either usb iso or dvd like last time.

If you had Windows 7 or 8.1 Pro earlier, you are able to get Windows 10 Pro.
The first option will make an ISO that works for both Home and Pro.

Apologies if this has already been answered earlier in the thread, but just a quick question:

I recently upgraded to Windows 10, and whilst most things are better (Office is working for me again, longer battery too); when I leave my laptop for a while I usually close the lid and when I get back it's just a case of popping in my password and I'm back to where I was before. Only since getting Windows 10, whenever I've closed the lid, I come back to find that my laptop has shut itself down, and this is on nearly full battery as well.

I'm not sure how to sort this out. I've tried changing the power settings (to sleep, hibernate, do nothing; all still have the laptop shutting down), and also locking the screen before I close the lid (same result). It's inconvenient for me as I have to wait a while for it to fully load the desktop, and then restoring my tabs for webpages can take some time too.

I'm using a Toshiba Satellite that's a little over 2 years old; I've had a quick Google but I'm not particularly techy-minded, so if anyone could possibly help then that would be greatly appreciated (the start button and file explorer won't work whilst I have my USB in either, but I've managed to find a way around that by going through the Recycle Bin icon on my desktop and bringing up my USB files that way).
