You're doing something wrong with the Windows 10 updates then. I ran GWX Control and all the nags went away, permanently.

I upgraded from 7 to 10 last year.

If I was to upgrade my C drive ie take it out put a new one in, what would be the best way of putting win10 onto the new drive?

And after installing win10 would using my windows/microsoft account allow me to not need to pay for a full version of win10?

My PC has gone a bit laggy recently, can't figure out what's causing it. So I'm thinking of just buying another SSD then format this current SSD to use it as extra storage. Fingers crossed the problem is corrupt filing or drive issue and not some other hardware issue.

You just install W10 using the Media Creation Tool. Just changing the hard disk wouldn't stop it activating again. Simples.

Just another thing that I would like to add is, I glad Microsoft got rid of the horrific charms bar. That was a pain in the backside.

Is this any safer to install yet? I'm supposed to upgrade on Wednesday but it says I can cancel or reschedule. I'm upgrading from Windows 7 Professional 64 bit. I like the idea of Windows 10 but I'm scared I don't like it and then part of me wonders am i better doing a clean install rather than an upgrade.

I don't have a lot on my computer but I do use a few music production programs and while they aren't very demanding, a lot of the additional tools I can sometimes use with them can be. I have 4gb of RAM which seems to do the job more than enough and it's the fact that I don't know if the upgrade would keep all my software and files. I know from previous upgrades that stuff usually ends up in a Windows Old folder but these programs I have just now are already installed and it takes time to do it all. Is that the case with software when you upgrade? Do you have to go through all the .exes again and redo it or does it do it for you?

Then there's the fact that I've had this version of Windows 7 for about 4 years now and i've got so many old things I don't need, odd bits and pieces that's just gathered up over the years that I'd like to clean up for good and I know I could do it all one by one but I don't know if a clean install is better. Then I was looking at Notebooks too, smaller screens but I don't know if they would run my software well enough. I suppose I want a change but don't know what to do. I've always had the big desktop towers. I don't game but I play some older PC games. I suppose a Windows 10 upgrade might refresh things or is a Notebook too much of a step down? I don't know or do I go for a better desktop. I use programs like Second Life too and i'd need to see if that's compatible with Windows 10 too.

Did you lot go through this? Did you have to make sure everything was ok before the upgrade? Was it worth it? Do you prefer older Windows? Is Windows 10 safe now? Can i be hacked or have my personal details shared with people?

If the programs you have installed work with Windows 10, and you go the upgrade route, then they'll just be there working after the upgrade. You won't have to do any reinstalling.

If you do the upgrade and it activates fine, but some things aren't working as they should, then you could try a clean install, and you'll find it'll still be activated afterwards, because the hardware will be registered with Microsoft.

Also they offer you an easy route to go back to Windows 7 for 30 days after the upgrade, if you really hate Windows 10 (you won't).

One glitch I have found is that it keeps waking up my pc when I put it into sleep mode. Sometimes if after a few seconds.

Can I ask :

do I need Windows 10 ?

I don't know much about computers , I have a very basic knowledge , will it change everything ? will I have to do all sorts of stuff ?

my system says it will upgrade tonight at 11pm

I currently have windows 7 .

.
what happens if I cancel the upgrade ?

If you cancel the upgrade you will stay on Windows 7.
I recommend you do go with 10.
Just be patient with the install as it will take time to transfer your files etc.
All your bookmarks/favourites & any add ons you have will remain in place.

Yes Windows 10 is highly recommended.

It's rock stable and a fantastic operating system. I'd take the upgrade now while you can still get it for free.

I know gamers who are still finding that many game downloads listed as W10 compatible are not fully compatible (they may run but have issues). Seems to be very much hit and miss, and somewhat system sensitive. W7 and W8 are not, they tell me, giving this problem so they tend to revert to them... however, recent PCs come with W10 as standard so things aren't so simple for them. I was discussing this with one such gamer in person only yesterday and he's tearing his hair out over the number of refunds he's having to battle over.

Therefore, no matter how 'fantastic' W10 may be, caution is still very much the watchword especially when buying a new system mainly for gaming.

Similar scenario to you. I was on Win 7 Pro for a few years and finally upgraded yesterday morning. It took about 3 hours, but that was expected.

(I upgraded my laptop from Windows 8.1 Home to Windows 10 about six months ago, but I had nothing critical on that, so it was a guinea pig.)

As said, if you upgrade, you have 30 days in which you can still revert to Windows 7. If you do revert then the subsequent upgrade to 10 even after 29 July will still be free, as you will have been auto-activated by the initial upgrade as I understand it? Others can confirm.

You can do a clean install but might be better to upgrade first and then, if you're happy with it, do a clean install much later if required.

It shouldn't delete anything, but you should always have a backup anyway, just in case.

Well there are problems.

I have a Radeon HD 4300/4500 series and apparantly AMD no longer support these cards and there is no software for Windows 10 and Catalyst Control Centre no longer works for Windows 10.

I also have a 24" TV which is connected via HDMI, when I am using the internet or anything just on the main screen I have slight overscan, black bars around the side but the main problem is the fact that i can only use Windows own Generic PnP monitor drivers. The entire screen has that fuzzy look to it, everything looks washed out and grey and fuzzy and because I don't have Catalyst Control Centre I can't tweak the settings to make it look good, I can only use my TV settings.

I just don't know what to do. I know the video card is old and my motherboard is at least 5 years old and I don't know what the cheapest option is. I was gonna get a cheap monitor but then I thought it might just look the same without the proper video drivers. Apparantly people with the AMD HD 5000 and 6000 series have problems too, i guess they are too old to be supported now.

What do you think I should do? I know changing the screen might not make a lot of difference but surely an actual PC monitor will be a bit sharper on the eye, especially with text? And then I suppose that doesn't fix the fact that if I want to stay on Windows 10 that my video card is just too old to be supported.

I don't want to spend any money but i don't know what to do. I wish I was on Windows 7 still but it would have been nice to try out Windows 10 properly. I keep seeing these fancy screens in shops now, it's like a kinda glass on the front, you know the ones? My Dad's laptop has a similar one and it does look really good. It would be nice to have something like that for my PC but then my video card and motherboard are probably too old for it.

Laptop has been forced in to upgrading to Windows 10 about 10 minutes ago when I had my back turned. I can't get away from the set up screen either.

Once it has started the upgrade, LEAVE IT ALONE!

If you interrupt it you may well find you have a computer that does not work.

But these updates always seem to crop up when I don't want them to.

I wasn't even asked if I wanted to upgrade. I went downstairs for 10 minutes and the next thing Windows was being upgraded with out my permission.

If you press the Windows Logo on the start menu, those operations are under power.

For the keyboard, again the windows logo, then Settings, then "Time and Language", make sure UK is there, also from that page click "Additional date...", then under language , choose "Change Input Methods", and make sure the UK keyboard is there, and that it is at the top.

I have removed US because I don't need it

I reverted back to Windows 8.1 . Found Windows 10 to be slower and fugly. Yes, I thought Windows 10 deserved a 'fugly' review. I won't be going back to Windows 10 anytime soon.

Think you can hide unwanted updates? Think again.

https://blogs.technet.microsoft.com/...ows-7-and-8-1/

Quote:
"Also today we are announcing that non-security updates for Windows 7 SP1 and Windows 8.1 (as well as Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1, Windows Server 2012 and Windows Server 2012 R2) will be available as a monthly rollup (fixes rolled up together into a single update). Each month, we will release a single update containing all of the non-security fixes for that month. We are making this change – shifting to rollup updates, to improve the reliability and quality of our updates."

To judge by the comments, a lot of people seem to want this. Perhaps they've all already updated (willingly or unwillingly) to W10, but I find the idea of having KB3035583 rolled up with a lot of stuff I might actually need pretty terrifying.

You can revert to your previous OS, if that's what you want.

I find a couple of reboots normally fixes problems with the Start menu.

I'm guessing that was because your update settings were set to download and install updates automatically. You can choose to have Windows 8.1 not check for updates, which means that you can check for updates whenever is convenient for you.
