Curious item this. I have never heard of the top right "x" being used for anything but closing the box. This is claiming that it initiates the W10 upgrade from a popup box.

That still has messed up USB audio recording in terms of how low recorded audio is without amplification. So it's not the best version for people who want to record audio through USB and can't be bothered, or don't know how to amplify the audio. Some things in 10 I wouldn't have been able to find if I hadn't have found out about right-clicking the Windows button and then clicking Control Panel. People are going to love Microsoft even more if clicking the 'X' causes Windows 10 to be installed anyway.

Just looks like an information box to me, so clicking OK or closing the box will have no effect; the schedule will stay as it is, but it's their schedule not ours! There is an link option on the box to let you change or cancel the scheduled upgrade but there should be a prominent CANCEL or POSTPONE UPGRADE buttons so yes, sneaky.

I have Recommended Updates turned off so this stuff never affects me unless I want it to. I may or may not upgrade before the 'free' time limit expires but I will decide, not Microsoft, and this kind of behaviour from MS makes me wonder what sneaky stuff they are shoving into W10 and not telling us about. It makes me less inclined to upgrade at all.

Have they gone completely mad? I used to a have respect for MS and their software, but since Nadella is there it all went down the toilet. Bring back Ballmer to throw a few chairs around and shout at people

I will upgrade to 10 (without going back to 8.1), but will do so sometime next year.

Finally got the 'November update' installed on my desktop at the weekend. Only took me 6 months and about 7 or 8 google sessions to find the problem (which was sorted by a simple one-line command).

Anyway the only issue so far - and it's fairly trivial but annoying - is my mouse pointer keeps reverting to one of the white schemes (probably the default) even though a black scheme is selected. I can get the black scheme back by changing the scheme in mouse properties to something else and then changing back immediately and clicking apply.

Any ideas on how to solve this?

It is only malware installs that I expect to try that type of trick.

I can only assume one of their directors has got himself a bonus target to achieve, meaning lots of dollars are riding on capturing a set amount of new converts.

Ironically, Nadella has actually been quite good for offering Microsoft products within the non-Microsoft ecosystem while neglecting his own! It seems insane to piss off your own customers by stuff like the forced upgrade. You'd think in the current state of the industry, where Microsoft no longer calls the shots, it would do its utmost to keep its customer base sweet, not piss them off.

Microsoft u-turn on "nasty trick" pop-up.

He's pragmatic in that he recognised it's impossible for MS to create a big/any consumer base in mobile phones, so they brought their software to iOS and Android instead and sidelined their OS, I get that. But I find this upgrade forced on their customers unprecedented. There's about a billion of them as MS likes to remind us, they are not all going to buy an overpriced Apple product or pick one of a million available Linux distros to install. All the more a reason to treat their customers with respect. Now they are herding them like animals any which way they like.

I have Win 10 on one of my laptops and have had no real problems with it up till now.

I have always logged onto the machine with a password, but somehow ~ possibly due to one drive ~ I now have to log on via my email account. How do I revert back?

What happened was that It seemed that the only way I could download an email attachment was to sign in/up one drive.

Did I read somewhere that you can download and install W10 as an extra (dual-boot) operating system, not use it, and later on do a free upgrade of the original W8 or 7 OS (after the 'free' year has run out)?

If you go to Settings - Accounts, there should be an option to switch back to the local account.

That certainly works but often better to use clean version really and start with a fresh slate.

While I understand Microsoft's eagerness to transfer as many people as possible over to Win 10, this type of underhand tactic just generates bad PR and it could indeed encourage people to go over to Chromebooks or OS X or Linux operating systems instead depending upon their requirements.

I think Microsoft will have gained a load of angry customers by the time the free offer of Windows 10 has ran out. There's probably a load right now, but there'll likely be even angrier customers if this install after clicking the 'X' is true.

It didn't really install after clicking 'X'. The panel was a notification that the upgrade was going to happen as part of automatic updates. it gave a date and time that the upgrade would be carried out

There is was an option to change or cancel the update underneath.

Clicking 'X' just shut down the notification.

Got windows 10 last week, from windows 7, hated the look of 8 so never upgraded to it, it seems fine apart from one thing, Digital spy is now not working properly, it keeps timing out and takes about 5 minutes to load pages, this is across all browsers and happens about 3/4 of the time, thinking of going back to windows 7 because of it. no other sites are affected and it was absolutely fine before I upgraded.( hoping this post works!)

Do not have any problems with digital spy website and the forum with any browser (firefox, opera, chrome) on Windows 10, including Edge.
Just tried on 5 different devices I have to hand that have W10 and all worked fine.
Do block the ads in firefox and chrome for digitalspy when using the forums. Just because it makes it an unmessy page UI with them blocked.
But even unblocked, had no issues loading or navigating the site either.

Unlike earlier notifications there was no obvious method of cancelling the upgrade only changing the time at which the upgrade would occur.

I ended up using Never 10 to stop it, until this latest nag/forced upgrade I'd just clicked the "don't upgrade" button but that had disappeared.

It was very sneaky of Microsoft to bypass the upgrade by calling it a "security update".

I can imaging alot of back slapping in that meeting when the question was asked "ok guys, we've run out of any imaginative ways to actually sell our product and we can't even give it away... anybody any ideas?"

They changed how it had worked before. Clicking x aborted the upgrade before. It's sneaky, counterintuitive, and misleading. They should be helping their customers not tricking them into things they do not wish to do.
