It was very sneaky of Microsoft to bypass the upgrade by calling it a "security update".
I can imaging alot of back slapping in that meeting when the question was asked "ok guys, we've run out of any imaginative ways to actually sell our product and we can't even give it away... anybody any ideas?" |

Or, they could have seen traffic statistics for Windows operating systems and decided that they wanted to reduce the massive use of Windows 7 (which a lot of 7 users will likely use because of the USB recording working as it should be) and so thought of all sorts of ways to get as many Windows PC users as possible on Windows 10.
But compatibility issues are IMO one of the main reasons why people stick with older versions of Windows. For example, I am currently running Windows XP (not online though), Windows 7 and Windows 8 to maintain full compatibility with everything I do. I am very reluctant to add yet another version and have to manage four of the darned things, well 6 as they are spread across 2 PCs, so I will hang back as long as I possibly can before installing W10 - probably the day before the free offer runs out! But when I do, it isn't going to reduce the number of W7 or 8 installations that Microsoft see in their stats... or the number of XP installations (which they can't see in their stats as I have online blocked). |

I notice M$ are up to their old tricks again of 'unhiding' previously hidden updates relating to W10. My DAW popped up message saying 'important updates'. Just frigging W10 again

That doesn't make sense, or are you saying that USB recording also works as it should do in W 10?

Well I for one won't be upgrading to W10 on my main laptop, I'd actually like to, but last time I tried it broke my switchable graphics (turns out it does that, thanks MS and HP for no fix) so I can't. Had to wipe back to factory to fix the damage it did in trying to revert.
So, if it sneaks another update I won't be a happy bunny. |

Three things I'm so sick of hearing about: Donald Trump, the EU referendum and Windows 10. Will any passing fairy grant me three wishes and I'll make the world a happier place?

You'd probably find it easier to avoid if you didn't come on a thread entitled "Windows 10".
I've just had KB**83 appear again, despite hiding it half a dozen times and running GWX Control Panel. Like it or not (and I don't), you can't NOT be involved with W10. I've already moved 2 PCs to Linux Mint and most untroublesome they are too. Every time I start up a Windows machine W10 tries to cram itself down my throat! |

Just keep recommended updates turned off and you shouldn't hear a peep from it.

Well, I've left Windows 7 and 8 far behind (with no regrets), but if you turn off recommended updates, won't you miss important (even critical) updates for those systems?

I have updates turned off and have used GWX since the middle of last year - it does the same thing as Never 10 but was available much, much earlier. Over the last year MS has spawned a whole industry devoted to thwarting its viral methods, but still it continues to evolve variations on its techniques for forcing a product on customers who don't want it or who just want to control their own lives. There is no way W10 is going to get by me before I'm ready: I'm just increasingly infuriated by the arrogance and high-handedness of this wretched company whose products I've used happily since MSDOS 2 and which has now become my tormenter.

This thread seems to have seriously lost its direction, The discussion over forced updates has been discussed to death many times if you look through al 150+ pages as well as other threads.
It is bloody irrelevant how it used to work, All that matters is for home especially, forced updates are a mandatory requirement of home WHETHER YOU LIKE IT OR NOT. Whinging about it endlessly here is not going to change MS's position one iota. Use the feedback mechanisms and whinge direct to MS So lets get this thread back on track and talk about some interesting things eg forthcoming redstone release. For those interested, the latest Insider version 14352 has a short expiry date of 15th July, which means they have to release a new version soon, so I am guessing the next release to Insiders will be the actual redstone release (or at least as close as it is going to get). Although an actual date has not yet been set, general belief is it will come out on full release on July 29th (exactly one year after initial release). Incidentally for those who have been holding upgrading until redstone is released, assuming MS stick to plan to stop free upgrades by end of 28th July, then you have to upgrade to 10586 soon or else you will miss the boat. Timing looks like you will not be able to update to redstone direct from 7/8 and get a free upgrade. |

Whinging about it endlessly here is not going to change MS's position one iota. I agree it's unlikely they will change re: the latter. As they see it, if you don't like auto-updates you have an option to upgrade to Win 10 Pro which allows you to defer updates for roughly a year. |

They will get a really bad press about this, they reclassified the upgrade, so they can install it on more computers, because it was too easy to refuse to upgrade. But it is hardly a security update is it. I think they should get a hint that some people for whatever reason don't want it and leave it at that. Don't keep them on their toes by changing how they have to react and eventually trick them into it. They'll get them when these people will buy a new computer when their old computer dies eventually.

We all seem to be forgetting that Windows is just an operating system - it runs the hardware and provides a platform for Photoshop, video editors, TV cards etc to run on.
The problem is that Microsoft wants our focus to shift away from our software to the OS itself, with all their silly apps and 'helpful' search tools etc. Most of the silly extras can be disabled/ignored, leaving you with something that looks and performs more or less like Windows 7. I don't care what an OS looks like or who makes it - it's just got to run my programs. Don't fall for the Microsoft nonsense that the OS is the thing. |

This might explain why so many people get caught up in the hype and want to convince everyone else to join them in the thrill of new fonts and new menus. |

Where do you turn recommended off? I thought I had, but KB**83 is still appearing. W8.1
Below is a link to a page on a tech site that gives more information: Look out: Microsoft shifts Windows 10 to ‘Recommended’ update, automatic download |

Really, you just need to run Never 10. It's from a source you can trust, is lightweight, runs once (no installation needed) to check some stuff and gives you a single button to alter the configuration options that Microsoft themselves have hidden away, and that's it. Job done. Run it again if you ever change your mind about allowing automatic OS update to Windows 10. Nothing else is affected.
